I recently took a month long trip through Alaska. The only location I received coverage was in Anchorage / Palmer. Fairbanks, Tok, Homer, Soldotna, and all places in between were dead. Not what I expected from a nationwide provider of this size.

In the middle of town, Lake Otis and Dowling, I have horrible reception. The phone signal is weak and calls drop constantly. I believe it is either the lack of towers or presence of an abandonded radio station across the street. Either way, I don't enjoy having my call dropped 6 times when trying to call my family in one evening. But, what are we going to do?

I have cellular one now owned by AT&T and t. My phone is really old and I used to get dropped calls constantly or no service at all. It has improved since the latter part of 2007. It will allow me to use it somewhat I still have to find a spot in the house or outside on the deck for it to work and it will drop eventually or be all garbled. I usually switch over to the land line. SO I am not sure if I should upgrade to AT&T and t or not maybe a newer cell would work better? I am not sure any cell would work in this area.

Every time I cross 36th St.my calls get dropped. GCI cellular sucks. The only good thing was my Alaska Air miles I got when I signed up. My calls get dropped constantly when I'm on the road and when I pull into my neighborhood near East Dowling and Sunchase I lose coverage. I was in Houston a few weeks ago and my phone worked great. No problems with service there so it isn't my phone. Can't get service on Fort Richardson, in Willow Creek, or in the Russian River.

T-Mobile uses Cellular One towers here in Anchorage, so I'm assuming this posting is for Cell One as well. A year ago, I wasn't even able to get any reception at Service High School area (if I'm standing outside), but now, I can get full bars when I'm deep *inside* the building with several concrete walls. I've also heard that people has been having problems getting reception on certain parts of Fort Richardson, but I haven't experienced any problems at all. The only problem I have is sending picture messages and receiving any internet services on my phone. Other than that, it works perfectly.

I had GCI phone.I guess reception was okay but customer service sucks! they are not well trained so different associate would say different things. they charged us mobile to mobile (suppose to be free) so many times and didn't credit back because they said it was incoming calls from unknown numbers. I remember it was my husband called me and we know they shouldn't charge us but we didn't have a prove... so we end up paying for it. and penalty getting out of contract early is $20 a month(per number) for how long your contract is left. I just thought it's good to know things like this also for people thinking about getting cell phone here.

I have great reception with my cell one phone all over anchorage. As long as I don't want to call anyone from anywhere outside anchorage i'm fine! we originally had AT&T and when cell one purchased AT&T Wireless the quality went in the toliet but we had the best plan in the state.. $40 a month unlimited anytime 24 / 7 with at&t.. guess what happened when cell one took over-! the plan went to crap and eventually they told us that we had to upgrade our phone because it was an older analog model. I knew they were upgrading the network and the analog phones wouldn't work eventually. they refused to switch us to the same plan with a new phone. US Cell companies suck bad. Go overseas and see what the Eurpeans and Asians have done. Our freakin lame cell companies need to get outsourced! the goverment needs to grow some and mandate the cell carriers quit bickering and use the same network... none of this hodge podge garbage..

As one of the posts before I chose Verizon because there is no ACS listed. ACS has the best coverage in the state. I have never had any issues with dropped calls or bad reception. I also used their EVDO card at O'Malley and Old Seward and at Charter College. It works great. Been with them for almost 6 years now and won't go anywhere else.

My cell phone generally works most places in Anchorage, except my house and within a block of my house. It has gotten a bit better than it used to be (in the past year or so) but calls still get dropped all the time when I'm at my house or near it. Very annoying. I don't live on the hillside (where reception is notoriously bad) or near any big obstructing things so I don't understand why it's so bad there.

I am on Cell One's service because it's my work's service and I have gotten a work phone. I have been reading the posts so far and I have to agree with all the negativity on Cell One. The voice quality is garbled, I have frequent "Network is Busy" signals, wierd automated calls from thier services for the last user, and the worst is not being able to use my phone in the area where I live. In my house, for example, I have to find a spot and stand there and it still has a 75% chance of being dropped. I am changing to my own phone soon and will be using another carrier for sure!

When it was ATT here I was thrilled, never any problems. Then the whole Dobson / Cell One episode! Yeah! (not). I get missed calls, I have poor signal at my house (also referred to as the cell phone black whole) off Abbott Loop. And (with reference to a previous post) my phone says made in China so it's an actual Razr not a knock off. My husband bought a new unlocked Sliver on the internet and simply swapped his sim card. He gets better signal and fewer dropped calls than my phone and we are both on the cell one network. So with reference to another previous post as long as the phone is made for the same network (gsm for gsm) we haven't had a problem with buying an unlocked phone. Cell one kept calling telling us we needed to bring his phone in for programing (not going to happen). Why does it need to be programed when it's working fine??? So they can lock it of course! Our contract ran out and we are on month to month waiting for a new game to come to town. Cell one kept calling saying we needed to come sign a new contract, and I finally had to tell them that if they called again we would just shut them off completely! We have been looking at options including those that would mean a long distance number, anyone have any suggestions?

I have an old Oregon number from the college days that I can't seem to let go. I've been up in Alaska for almost two years since graduation and Cingular (which worked perfect for me) finally dropped me from there network. To keep my number I switched to T-Mobile while visiting Oregon about two months ago. So far its been an absolute nightmare. My outgoing calls work a-ok, but my incoming calls will not function correctly. Random numbers show up on my caller ID and the delay is so bad that it is impossible to talk. So I communicate through text messages, which suprisingly text messaging works just fine.

Got to alaska in mid- Aug. My reception was better than ACS, Cell 1, and Ak Digital in Anchorage and the Valley for about 2 months, then I had numerous troubles ( missed calls, dropped, wierd listed #,poor receiption, 2-5 sec delays). recieving which led to out-going problems.5-9 Attempts to fix made (weekly?). Tekkies stated it was a problem with the borrowed towers (roaming) from Dobson? and DLS?( Wireless monopoly?). Custmer service very helpful. Released from Contract. Now looks like I'm forced to pay double for 1 / 2 the service and reported poor reception with one of the local companies. Wish Cingular was here for more than vacation time.

I just joined but I regret it. I was using Alaska Digitel before and never had a single dropped call within the city of Anchorage. Now I'll be in the middle of a conversation and the only indication the call has been dropped is the lack of response after I've carried on chatting for a minute or two AFTER they can no longer hear me. I've never had to repeat myself so much in my life. It's so bad that I've started to say everything twice at the office, too -- even when I'm not on the phone -- for worry that they didn't hear me the first time. Bleh.

Just a warning to anyone considering buying a phone from Cellular one. They sell illegal international phones. We bought a Razr and had constant problems with the battery dying, so we took it in and they eventually had us send it in for repair. It came back with the problem - nothing was done. Cell1 said the motorolas do not have a warranty so they couldn't do anything about the problem. After contacting Motorola we found out their phones always have a warranty. But cell one was correct - the motorolas "they" sell don't have a warranty. Thats because they are selling knock off phones from singapore. Not all of their phones are knock offs, but some are and they know it. Check your phones people. They should say made in China. If they don't you should make them replace it.
