I have cellular one now owned by AT&T and t. My phone is really old and I used to get dropped calls constantly or no service at all. It has improved since the latter part of 2007. It will allow me to use it somewhat I still have to find a spot in the house or outside on the deck for it to work and it will drop eventually or be all garbled. I usually switch over to the land line. SO I am not sure if I should upgrade to AT&T and t or not maybe a newer cell would work better? I am not sure any cell would work in this area.
Every time I cross 36th St.my calls get dropped. GCI cellular sucks. The only good thing was my Alaska Air miles I got when I signed up. My calls get dropped constantly when I'm on the road and when I pull into my neighborhood near East Dowling and Sunchase I lose coverage. I was in Houston a few weeks ago and my phone worked great. No problems with service there so it isn't my phone. Can't get service on Fort Richardson, in Willow Creek, or in the Russian River.
T-Mobile uses Cellular One towers here in Anchorage, so I'm assuming this posting is for Cell One as well. A year ago, I wasn't even able to get any reception at Service High School area (if I'm standing outside), but now, I can get full bars when I'm deep *inside* the building with several concrete walls. I've also heard that people has been having problems getting reception on certain parts of Fort Richardson, but I haven't experienced any problems at all. The only problem I have is sending picture messages and receiving any internet services on my phone. Other than that, it works perfectly.
I had GCI phone.I guess reception was okay but customer service sucks! they are not well trained so different associate would say different things. they charged us mobile to mobile (suppose to be free) so many times and didn't credit back because they said it was incoming calls from unknown numbers. I remember it was my husband called me and we know they shouldn't charge us but we didn't have a prove... so we end up paying for it. and penalty getting out of contract early is $20 a month(per number) for how long your contract is left. I just thought it's good to know things like this also for people thinking about getting cell phone here.
I have great reception with my cell one phone all over anchorage. As long as I don't want to call anyone from anywhere outside anchorage i'm fine! we originally had AT&T and when cell one purchased AT&T Wireless the quality went in the toliet but we had the best plan in the state.. $40 a month unlimited anytime 24 / 7 with at&t.. guess what happened when cell one took over-! the plan went to crap and eventually they told us that we had to upgrade our phone because it was an older analog model. I knew they were upgrading the network and the analog phones wouldn't work eventually. they refused to switch us to the same plan with a new phone. US Cell companies suck bad. Go overseas and see what the Eurpeans and Asians have done. Our freakin lame cell companies need to get outsourced! the goverment needs to grow some and mandate the cell carriers quit bickering and use the same network... none of this hodge podge garbage..
As one of the posts before I chose Verizon because there is no ACS listed. ACS has the best coverage in the state. I have never had any issues with dropped calls or bad reception. I also used their EVDO card at O'Malley and Old Seward and at Charter College. It works great. Been with them for almost 6 years now and won't go anywhere else.
I have an old TDMA phone. We used to have average coverage, but now it poor to non-existant. I have been asking all my friends their carriers. Everyone says cell one is there carrier, but they all complain. I want to upgrade... but the plans cost more and get less minutes...
Everyone said Nextel does not work in Alaska, I was surprised when it had a signal in the Anchorage airport, then as we drove away it never lost it, few miles away and still full signal.
