I went on a cruise to Alaska and hoped to use my Droid for phone and for internet. While I occasionally was able to make a call, I was never able to receive one (straight to voicemail - no rings) and I could never get any internet connection. Very disappointing as those who had ATT service were able to get reception everywhere we went.

Many dropped calls. Many calls go straight to voice mail, sometimes taking as many as three days to show up on the phone. Calls from outside Anchorage are dropped or never get through. Numerous calls to AT&T and no positive results. Poor phone service, extremely poor customer service. But they never fail to remind me that I am eligible for an upgrade... not going to happen.

Verizon is the best (other than ACS) throughout Alaska. Sprint (via LG lx150) just stinks

Alaska is not highly populated, keep this in mind when traveling here. You get pretty good coverage along most of Alaska's highway system if you are near towns - - but none in the mountians or areas away from our few towns. Many dead spots in suburbs and rual areas. Extremely localized service around towns and villages in the bush (that is anywhere off the 2 main highways). Please look on your map and learn the roads. There are only 9 highways in Alaska and only 2 are major highways. This will prepare you to plan ahead and enjoy your visit to our beautiful state.

I have an old Oregon number from the college days that I can't seem to let go. I've been up in Alaska for almost two years since graduation and Cingular (which worked perfect for me) finally dropped me from there network. To keep my number I switched to T-Mobile while visiting Oregon about two months ago. So far its been an absolute nightmare. My outgoing calls work a-ok, but my incoming calls will not function correctly. Random numbers show up on my caller ID and the delay is so bad that it is impossible to talk. So I communicate through text messages, which suprisingly text messaging works just fine.

Just a warning to anyone considering buying a phone from Cellular one. They sell illegal international phones. We bought a Razr and had constant problems with the battery dying, so we took it in and they eventually had us send it in for repair. It came back with the problem - nothing was done. Cell1 said the motorolas do not have a warranty so they couldn't do anything about the problem. After contacting Motorola we found out their phones always have a warranty. But cell one was correct - the motorolas "they" sell don't have a warranty. Thats because they are selling knock off phones from singapore. Not all of their phones are knock offs, but some are and they know it. Check your phones people. They should say made in China. If they don't you should make them replace it.

I live practically downtown, but I can't connect to the internet with my EDGE WAN card. The test program says that I'm at 16% signal strength. (Apparently too weak to allow the connection to occur.) Even downtown in the Conoco-Phillips building, I only have 35% signal strength. Cellular One talks a good game, but at least for me, they're not delivering!

I recently moved up here and I have Verizon. Phone services doesn't work as well and none of my features work. I had to cancel everything but the plan itself. I'm thinking it's just Alaska in general. My friend has Cingular and she has some problems as well. Sometimes when I can't get through it says something about ACS. I don't know what code that is but I don't think I can win up here. I hear GSM and CDMA both are okay up here.

I had GCI phone.I guess reception was okay but customer service sucks! they are not well trained so different associate would say different things. they charged us mobile to mobile (suppose to be free) so many times and didn't credit back because they said it was incoming calls from unknown numbers. I remember it was my husband called me and we know they shouldn't charge us but we didn't have a prove... so we end up paying for it. and penalty getting out of contract early is $20 a month(per number) for how long your contract is left. I just thought it's good to know things like this also for people thinking about getting cell phone here.

Occasional dropped calls but usually pretty good service. I'm still on the digital network so I haven't had any of the GSM problems. And I'm still on my original AT&T plan which is unbeatable so I'm stickin' with it as long as possible. But what will happen once the TDMA network goes obsolete?

Reception is consistantly good enough here that I can use my cell phone as my primary home phone most of the time, but sporadically I get dropouts where I lose signal for a moment despite the fact that I am not moving.

Came here on work assignment. Verizon SWORE they had service here. That is both true and false.Their service is off of other companies (ACS?) cell towers... they have no towers of thier own. Also, when I had a problem with my phone, they had no place for me to bring it (I should mail it to them! HA) Yes, I can make phone calls. about 60-65% of time) False as to receiving calls. Phone rings once and then goes right to voice mail, Am able to retrieve message and return call but thats not the issue. Bottom line, is that probably only 2 in 10 incoming calls are received by me AS THEY ARE HAPPENING, the balance, I have to call them after I get the message. Bigger issue thoough, is when I spoke with Verizon about this, I was told that I must have 3 bars showing to receive calls (but able to make calls with 2 bars) Cannot get Blackberry, (or any other Smartphone) because they MUST have 3 bars to work. My neighbor just got his Blackberry... he had to SHIP IT to his sister's house (along with his old phone) so that his phone #'s, info, could be transferred because Verizon is unable to do it while you are up her. As far as their "call 228" to update goes, that can't be done from up here either, it needs to be done in the lower 48. so I do it whenever I travel out of state.). Another issue, 3 different friends, also up here on Travel Assignments, received notices that T Mobile was cancelling their contracts, because they had spent to much time up here. They are also traveling nurses and have extended the contracts for 2-3 extensions ( ie: 6-9 months)like I have. KUDOS to Verizon for NOT doing that.
