I am a telecom contractor working all over the state. I have had GCI service for about 10 years now, first ATT, then Cell One, then ATT again. A few hiccups with the switchovers, but the folks at GCI, especially in the Mat-Su Valley worked hard at making everything smooth. I have tried ACS, and unfortunately their service is spotty in the areas I have worked in. I think in Anchorage they are ok, but out of their core area, they have problems. Now, with the new GCI switchover to their own towers (Alaska Digitel) I have had to get a new Sim card, and have had a myraid of problems.... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... . 1. My own home number could not call me. (not long distance) 2. Their software updates would not download. 3. Only multimedia messages I can send to are other GCI cellular customers. 4. Only multimedia messages I can receive are from GCI cellular customers. 5. Technical Support has not followed through, had to ask for a Supervisor this last time. 6. Dropped Calls! Dropped Calls! Dropped Calls! Holy Smokes, You would think they would have researched their problem areas before they switched this on. 7. Phone signal is confused. Phone is not physically moving, but the signal strength and the type change randomly. First technician said this was from the phone trying to interpret whether I was downloading information or not. (HUH?) 2nd technician said it was because the phone was in a different area when it was doing this and wanted to know the cross streets. Said they had to open up a trouble ticket with AT&T. I explained that the service had been excellent up until I switched, and that they needed to look at their service instead! 8. Called Customer Service, (great agent actually), lodged a complaint, she gave me a credit, I said they had until the end of March to get the problems straightened out. Otherwise, my contract is null and void, because they cannot give me the service I am paying for. Customer Service Agent actually told me she was not happy with the switch either, she has personally had lots more dropped calls. I know they will eventually get it right, unfortunately with the work I do, I rely on them getting it right today! Sometimes with the areas I travel in, it can be the difference between calling for assistance or freezing to death.
