I can never make a call from inside the house, the calls always fail. I contacted ATT and they told me I could buy a micro cell to install in my house for 200 dollars! I already pay for service and shouldn't have to pay AGAIN for the same service. We were told that ATT gets good coverage in this area, so far that has been not true.

We moved to Ak from ND for military. Verizon told us that we would get service here and should have no problems. Well, I do get reception and can make and receive calls. HOWEVER, at randoms times, without moving the phone, I will just lose calls. AND, while I can send and receive text messages, I cannot send and receive picture or video messages. Additionally, when my phone rings, it only rings for a few seconds before it goes to voicemail, that's how long it takes for my phone to get the signal that someone is calling. Also, I cannot get the mobile web on my phone. My husband has a Blackberry, and his phone features seem to be working fine, with the exception of the poor reception. All in all, very disappointed because when we were in ND, we LOVED Verizon, it was awesome. Not what you would expect for a global carrier.

I have my Verizon phone from when I lived in the lower 48. When I came up here I was just going to turn it off but when I realized that there were very few providers with even fewer areas of great reception, I left it on and still use it. Verizon does not have towers up here so they use ACS Wirless towers. Anyway, I get great reception all over town as well as the outskirts.

I had 6 months left on my contract, my phone had 5 bars all over Anchorage, all the way to palmer and wasilla down to girdwood. I had a national plan so no roaming charges, only downside was my number was long distance for anyone actually in alaska to call me. I got rid of the plan when my contract was up got alaska digitel and every single call now is dropped, got 1 bar strength and I can see the cell tower from my window. wish I had kept cingular, they were cheaper too.

verizon wireless with free roaming is great, I have had no problem with Verizon since they use other towers in the area. sometimes it sounds like the call is getting dropped but it doesnt. We have had one dropped call and it was in south anchorage.

Cingular is horrible out here. On a very sunny clear week, you might be able to get through to someone... but you'll get cut off mid conversation nonetheless.

I have the GSM nationwide plan with family talk. sometimes you cant get through and go straight to voice mail, but when you do get through the reception is fine. I have been using mine for 3 months here and havent been charged any additional fees.

Depending on the area of town, service is usually pretty good. There are a few spots that dont have coverage, and there is no 3G service (yet). It is all free digital roaming in Achorage, although Sprint doesn't like letting people know that. The only perks of the service that work are voicemail, caller id, call waiting... and thats about it. On Elmendorf AFB, it's mostly good, but sometimes loses signal around the flightline. PCS mode only works fine. Outside of Anchorage, though you need the automatic feature turned on for digital roam (pay roaming).
