My AT&T worked perfectly in Homer in 2006. When I arrived at the airport in Anchorage in 2007 it didn't work at all. I don't sign contracts with cell phone companies. The phone was a pay as you go. Solution: I bought a pay as you go ACS phone to use only in Alaska and the AT&T to use everywhere else.
I live in Homer, Alaska and my friends from college all have AT&T / T-Mobile / Verizon. They all have really good reception everywhere, except in the middle of the woods. Go figure. But other than that every one gets good service. Since AT&T just bought Cell One, and is now in Alaska. Oh and the only bad thing about Verizon is its Internet. You can't go online and you can't receive picture messages or video messages. Nor send them.
In the summer of 2006 my AT&T pay as you go phone worked perfectly in Alaska. When AT&T switched to Cingular, my remaining minutes were transferred to a new phone. In January, 2007 when I returned to Alaska the new phone didn't work at all. When I called Cingular they said they did not cover Alaska.
I have lived and traveled around Alaska since May 2006. My Cingular service worked great until 12 / 28 / 06. Cingular did inform me that this would happen and offered me to back out of my contract because of it. They explained that they will no longer pay to use other carriers towers. My phone is completely dead in Homer and I assume all over AK as they said it would be. However, I have not been outside of Homer since my service went dead.
1. Very Poor coverage 14 miles out on East End Rd 2. Get free L.D. My L.D. calls are mysteriously cut off after about 2 min. - happens every time 3. Tried a free upgrade to their digital system. When I discovered I would be committing to an additional 2 year contract I returned the phone per our agreement. They tried to hold me to the 2 year contract even though the phone was returned and never activated.
I am very disapointed with Cellular One service. Every three months or so we lose service for about 2 weeks. It tends to go out for 2-3 day completly and then when it comes back calls are dropped, phones don't ring, voice messages are recieved HOURS after they are left. And new this month... .I can't answer a call no matter how many time I press the answer button, and I can't end calls no matter how many times I press the End button. This would seem to be a problem with my model of phone but alas, it is happening to othe people who have different models and brands of phones!
Frustrated! Get very little reception - usually busy signal, or drops call after made..lucky to get 1 or 2 bars sometimes... useless phone service... .on the old AT&T digital plan
It's great in town and on the road, but out in the backcountry while snowboarding I got no service. Also inside the locker room and bathroom at school, its has little or no service at all.
