We drover from Ga to AK and got service most of the trip except parts of california and through canada. We don't have 3G here in North pole. When we called Verizon to get the data plan taken off they said they couldn't do that but they would send us new phones. We haven't received them yet but hopefully they will work once we get them. If not I guess we will be switching carriers. Other than that Verizon is ok.

Brought my cheap little Samsung phone with me from the states, works fine in the North Pole area. No 3G though, so if you're a data user, beware. I work at Eielson AFB and there is 3G on base (as well as in Fairbanks), but NO SIGNAL for about a mile between N. Pole and Eielson, specifically around the Chena overflow to the train tracks. Occasional dropped calls while in N. Pole, otherwise, no problems.

I have to say, Verizon is the best. I have good cell reception all through the north star bourough except in birch lake recreational area. I drove from Texas to Alaska and the only problems I had was in Galap, NM. and small bits of British Colombia / Yukon. I just wish I could get a local number in Alaska through Verizon.

Reception decent throughout Fairbanks and North Pole... Actually better than some of the local carriers. I believe Cingular / ATT phones bounce off Cellular One (local carrier) towers. Supposedly Cingular / ATT is in the process of purchasing Cell One, so local numbers (907 area code) may be something offered in the future to Cingular / ATT customers with out of state numbers.

Wish Verizon would move up here so I could have a local number. Works great all over the USA as I travel extensively.
