I had zero reception inside my house until AT&T reluctantly told me about and subsequently sent me a free booster. The c.s. rep first told me, "I don't understand why you have no signal. Our map shows you're in a GREAT area." I told her I'd be happy to video my phone showing no bars inside my place then she put me on hold. When she came back, she told me this area qualifies for a free booster that plugs into my wireless internet. How quickly my "great area" dropped to the very bottom. Anyway, now I have 5 bars all the time but the booster sucks the life out of my phone in about 3 hours if I'm home and the phone isn't plugged in. I've left the house on several occasions only to find my phone's about 1 minute away from dying. Even though I've got a good signal now, I'm still thinking of switching to Verizon...

Very poor coverage -- switching between 4G, edge, and no signal -- and constant dropped and missed calls. AT&T customer support sometimes say they are "upgrading" towers, but reception never improves. How can AT&T legally claim to have full coverage in this area when the service is practically unusable?

All three of us had iPhone 3G and 3Gs phones until June, then switched to iPhone 4s. The reception has been somewhat better with the iPhone 4, but barely, so it's not the phones. Outside I can get 1-2 bars and have a call last for a while. In my home, 0-1 bars and the calls drop in seconds. This is crazy. HOWEVER, today (10 / 13 / 2010) the AT&T rep I spoke to stated that a new tower being built a mile NW of our home is scheduled for activation on November 17th (they got the construction going before the FCC put the kabosh on new cell towers being built two months ago). We'll see... my guess is that it's somewhere around 44th and Thunderbird, but I'll have to drive around and hunt. I bought a MicroCell for in the home, and I can talk for almost 2 minutes before that drops calls. That technology is too new and too quirky, and besides, it's a band-aid to the real issue.

My phone shows that I have full 3G reception but lately I can only use apps that require internet intermittently (around 1-3 minutes of usage before the phone shows roaming) and can't use Safari for web browsing. Not sure if AT&T has become overloaded in the area or not but lately having all the features on the phone have become worthless because I can't use them. Traveled to OC the other day and had full use, so not my phone causing the problem. Is anyone else having problems with gaining access to the net?

I've had really good 3G reception - until yesterday. Lucky to get any bars now on 3G and Edge is less than reliable. Does anyone else notice a recent drop in coverage? Tried to email AT&T but that wasn't working either. Love the phone and rely on it, but can't rely on it the way it is right now.

I just moved to this area of Scottsdale and while my phone always says that I have 3-5 bars, I am constantly dropping calls. Once again... like most people... I love the phone, but AT&T's service is awful. I also have another AT&T phone that I use for work (HTC Tilt) which has actually even worse with dropped calls with supposed full signal. I actually travel around town for work every day and it's more or less the same across town. I would hope that there are good niches, but I sure haven't found them.

No reception in my house. Can sometimes get it outside. We have 3 AT&T phones including a Blackberry. Two phones allow us to select manual service. If we switch to T-Mobile we get great service. But when we leave the house we lose all service until we switch back to AT&T. Sometimes it will switch to T-Mobile but not enough to depend on it. Blackberry doesn't have the option.

Phone Model: Nokia 3200b & Motorola v551 & Samsung Sync |
92nd St.& Shea Blvd., Scottsdale, AZ 85260 |
Sat Nov 10, 2007 |
Living just north of the mentioned intersection, reception is spotty inside the house at best. Outside improves it of course, but barely until I am outside my condo complex entirely. Of the three phones mentioned used here, the Motorola v551 has the worst reception with normally only one bar (of four) inside, which I wasn't surprised at since my experience with Motorola products has been supportive of typically bad reception (among other things). The Samsung Sync is the only brand new phone, and I had hopes because of that, that it would perform admirably where the Motorola had failed. Unfortunately, though it's signal strength has been superior, it typically produces no more than two bars (of five) inside. Finally, the Nokia 3200b, being the oldest phone (and the one which when I have it out everyone invariably says, "That phone is ancient, you need a new phone!") produces the most bars usually (four of seven), something which was not unexpected, as this phone has always been superior in reception (not to mention call quality overall and battery life) to ANY other phone I have used or had the opportunity to test out. Having said that however, when I'm inside calls are almost a crap shoot to make sometimes. I'll dial a number and depending on the phone used and its software, I'll either be immediately rejected or it will simply "hang" while "dialing". I either have to move in the house or just try the call again. On the phones which tell me, it seems there is a "fight" going on between carriers in my area- the signals of the AT&T / Cingular towers are constantly vying with the signals from the T-Mobile towers, with usually the T-Mobile towers appearing to be slightly "stronger". According to the tower map on this site, it would appear that this is due my location being on the fringe of both carriers' signals. So the issue being with my location in relation to the towers, as once I'm in town more, everything is great with perfect signals and reception. I won't rail at AT&T for that, just kindly ask they add more towers out my way... LOL For the record, I have been with AT&T since they were AT&T (LOL) and since before that. While they certainly aren't the perfect carrier, over all these years, it seems to me that they have been the most reliable and dedicated service available. I have lived all over the west coast and the mid-west with service being basically the same great levels. Yes, I've had my problems with them occasionally, but compared to what I hear all my friends always say about Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Alltel, I'm glad I have stayed with them. No service is perfect and I have not had an issue yet that AT&T wasn't willing to solve in some way, or a bad enough problem to make me switch. My only real complaint is that I more than likely won't be able to keep my original plan forever (which is so much better than current ones)- they are trying like hell to get me to switch to a new plan, slowly dismantling their own ability to service mine (deactivating / reprogramming features or activating ones I can't access).

After quoting their coverage map that says I should have good coverage at my home ( which works about 20% of the time / and no 3G service) I filed serveral complaints and they finally told me to return the phone and find another carrier. Customer service had no explaination as to why service is so poor. Unable to speak to tech to trouble shoot. Poor service, poor follow up and no interest in improving service in this area. Business made me switch from T-Mobile which was generally excellent in Phoenix and Scottsdale to Cingular, which is clearly not as good. Seems like Cingular shows bars but then has trouble connecting or drops. I am in industry and think issue is capacity (Cingular gets very bad as rush hour, etc). Most of my friends in telco business generally think that Verizon and T-Mobile are best in Phoenix and Scottsdale and that Sprint is clear worst. As for the complaints in North Scottsdale (North of 101, this is largely a function of Scottsdale's unwillingness to allow towers. The GSM carriers (Cingular and T-Mobile) seem to do better (just added a tower at Pima near Princess) but it is very ad hoc -- try a phone at your house first. I have friends that have zero bars at home which sucks.
