AT&T (Cingular) has degraded over the last couple of years - especially since the merger. No more than 2 bars at most around this area and often, dropped calls if I even attempt to move around after I've started a call.

Inside, get 1-2 bars, dropped calls every once in a while. Work at Harbor Bay, same thing. I get better signal just about anywhere else.

The cellphone is practically unusable in or near the house. Cingular is letting me cancel my contract because they just can't get me reliable service. It's frustrating since I've already tried Sprint and T-Mobile with no luck

No real problems roaming around Alameda and Oakland for most of the past year. Have had a few dropped calls lately though. Terrific reception in my apartment on the West End. Unlike my neighbor who has Verizon, I don't need to go outside and walk around to talk!

I usually get only 1 or 2 bars at home, with lots of dropped calls. I work near the intersection of Otis and Grand. My reception at work has improved to 3's and sometimes 4's. Still have dropped calls and poop[r sound quality.

I've lived here for 4 years and just this week while I'm shopping for a new cell phone and calling plan / carrier, learned why I can't use my cell phone at home: Alameda island has been left behind in the cell phone revolution. More often than not I can neither make nor receive cell phone calls from my home. Friends and family who visit, with a variety of phones and carriers have experienced the same thing. Every other Tuesday, if I click my heels together and cross my fingers I can make a call from my cell phone without going outside. But only from the living room. There's no rhyme or reason to the occaisional reception. I can't get clear radio reception in the living room, but I can in the bedroom. A related problem? I don't know. This situation actually cost me some demerits when I worked for an organization that required me to be available by cell phone at all times. It was assumed that I was lying when I explained the situation. Not pretty. A T-Mobile sales rep told me that the Navy won't permit a cell phone tower on the base, even though it's been closed for years. That west end of the island is therefore excluded from reliable reception. I'd like to suggest a citizen's letter writing campaign to Alameda's elected officials.

Near webster and central, I will get reception if I stand in one spot, but if I move, the signal is lost. It only gets better over near park street and that for me is only about 2 bars and still not great reception.

Reception veers wildly from 5 bars to zip and back, inside or out. Every other call drops. We must be at the edge of a reception area; CDMA area retracts toward tower as call load increases.

The reception on the west end of alameda is worse now than it has ever been. There are no bldgs to block signals. What is the story. Cingular needs to upgrade their signal strength badly.
