I live in Long Beach but travel hundreds of miles each week all over LA and Orange county for work. I am constantly on the phone in the car, and only rarely do I get dropped. When I first signed up with them 5 years ago I lived in Laguna Niguel, and the reception was poor because of all of the canyons, but 2 weeks later they put up new towers and it was perfect. As for customer service... well, that is another story, but most companies are a pain to deal with from what I hear. If reception is your main concern, switch to Sprint!
Always have outstanding reception with Verizon at home and most places in LA. I almost never experience dropped calls or other reception or connectivity issues. This is also the case in the other Metro-areas I frequent (NY, SF, Detroit)
Used to have great reception with AT&T. Since Cingular took over, I have noticed a steady decline in reception. Calls drop very frequently now, and I never used to drop them berfore. I used to be able to make calls within my house; now I have no signal. Time to switch carriers. Cingular is pretty bad.
Cingular is working very well here. I've tried them all, and Verizon is probably the best, but Cingular is a close 2nd. It seems that Long Beach is a bit spotty in coverage with Sprint and ATT, although not unusable - sometimes one house over or across the street makes the difference.
I've had T-Mobile for over a year and have been satisfied both with the coverage and the customer service. Much better than what I got from ATT. There is a dead spot in Signal Hill and you can't always get a signal if you're anchored off Catalina away from Avalon. Aside from good call quality, the T-Zone service is very good. I can even send and receive emails via my ISP's email accounts anywhere in their service area.
When driving over Signal Hill, the Verizon signal drops about 75% I the time going soutbound on Cherry. Once you get to the bottom of Signal Hill the reception is fantastic due to a Tower being right there in the abandoned LBUSD Campus before you get to PCH.
Calls drop constantly in my house. Also have lots of call switching going on (ie I dial a number and get some totally unrelated person, while the person I am calling gets a call from someone they dont know at the same time!).
