I hope I never have an emergency. Even with all the bars up on mine or my other family members' phones, we are constantly getting dropped calls, not being able to make calls, or missing calls or voicemails. I was once told by an AT&T employee that whenever he drives through our area and is on the phone, his calls are always dropped.

A year ago, I switched from Verizon to AT&T in order to get the iPhone. What's happened since is a nightmare. Verizon's coverage was nearly flawless, and I'd heard how bad AT&T's coverage is from friends who've since switched to Verizon. As of six months ago, I can rarely, if ever, make or receive calls from my apartment. When a call does get through, it's dropped within seconds. AT&T's tech support gives me the usual runaround — it's not them, it's the iPhone; maybe it's something I'm doing wrong; "we're putting a new tower in your area" (they've been saying that for almost a year now); and, finally, do you live in a hilly area? No, I live on Wilshire and LaBrea. Basically, AT&T's commercials about better coverage amount to a bunch of false advertising, and based on the complaints the company consistently receives, they know it. It's enough to make me ditch the iPhone...

I work on sound stages all the time. I get NO reception on my iphone when I am inside a stage at Universal or any of the other lots in the area. I'm literally 200 feet from Steven Spielberg's office. Nada. I'm in a crowd of filmmakers all staring at their iphones and cursing. Outside the door I get a couple of bars. Att, this is your core subscriber base. What on earth are you thinking?

Reception is good with this phone with never a dropped call and only occasional static. My last phone, a Motorola 551, had inconsistent reception, but this phone has worked well in almost all areas.

Laurel Canyon, Los Angeles, CA 90046 Fri Mar 21, 2008

Yesterday I was walking in the neighborhood and saw a sign addressed to fellow AT&T customers. The sign said that AT&T had stopped leasing a tower from T-Mobile in the area. It also said AT&T had no plans to reactivate the tower or increase service in the area unless enough people complained about no service. I called AT&T and their tech people confirmed this. They also told me there were several areas in LA with similar issues. There is no guarantee that service will be restored. Hopefully, enough people will complain to get AT&T to reactivate the tower. Otherwise, they will wave the early termination fee. Which is something. But not great if you just bought an expensive phone...
