The reception ranges from 1 to 2 bars at MOST. Inside buildings, I'll be lucky to get 1 bar. Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile work great here, why not AT&T?

Very shoddy reception. Never have more than 2 or 3 bars anywhere in my home. Sometimes I won't be notified of missed calls / voicemails until an hour later. Basically have to go out into the driveway or open street for decent reception.

This company is such a disaster. No reception at the place I'm staying in Brentwood, which is a major neighborhood in the city of Los Angeles. You'd think I was deep in the Mojave Desert. How they have the nerve to demand that I pay an early cancellation fee when they don't provide the service I've contracted for is beyond me. If there's a lawyer who wants to file a class action suit, I'm happy to testify.

Can someone please tell me why AT&T barely works underneath the Hollywood Sign? I am visiting and work from home and the service terrible. I maybe have 2 bars and the calls drop. I had to drive down to Beachwood Canyon just to get service. My uncle uses Sprint here which works just fine. I spent 2+ hrs on the phone with AT&T yesterday for her to tell me that there are towers there and it "should" work. I told her it obviously didn't or I wouldn't spend 2 hrs of my time calling them (from a land line, btw, the only way to get through). She also suggested I spend $200 to by an aircell.

I have to say I'm seriously considering switching from AT&T to the Verizon iPhone, if and when the iPhone 5 is released in July. In fact, I'm so frustrated with my phone service with AT&T, I'm probably going to pay the reduced early termination fee for myself and my business partner. We both will have one year left on our contracts and are chomping at the bit to switch unless in the interim AT&T does something to improve its service in the areas we use predominantly. I am not optimistic though. Just so you know, I live in Los Feliz and get very good service at my house. But my place of employment is located in West Los Angeles and the service there stinks, to put it mildly. Also, I spend a lot of my time in an area adjacent to where I live called Silverlake and the service there is even worse. Those are the two areas I am rating in this survey.

AT&T Is a complete joke! I left Sprint for ATT And that was the worst mistake of my life! I drop 99% of all calls and when I am connected, I cant even understand the other party due to static and reception breaking up. When I talk on my phone Im always told it sounds like Im talking into a wind tunnel while holding my phone backwards facing the wind. WHAT A JOKE! For the record, I also have AT&T DSL And I basically get the same issues! DSL is always dropping connection and my speeds are slower than dial up and I pay extra for the Pro- Elite Business plan that is suppose to guarantee speeds between 4-6Mbps but I average 2Mbps. AT&T Should be ashamed of themselves. I pay for mobil services and they do not give me the service... They guarantee me a speed for DSL, and I do not even come close to the speeds! I hope AT&T Gets this matter taken to court and pays dearly for false advertising and not meeting contracted terms of agreement. By not meeting all terms in the contract AT&T Should allow me to walk away with a clean bill and select another provider with no penalty! How does AT&T legally get away their actions and continue charging the customer for "breaking a contract" when AT&T never upheld to anything on their end?? This is BS! DO NOT USE AT&T For ANYTHING! THey are garbage and I would NEVER recommend AT&T TO anyone!

With my I-phone 3G I get abysmal reception in the area below the Hollywood sign. Sometimes the phone will ring, but the signal's rarely strong enough to make a connection and on the rare occasion that it connects, the conversation will be dropped within a minute. Instead of showing bars, my phone most often simply says "searching." Contrary to their reception map, there is no AT&T reception whatsoever in upper Beachwood Canyon with an I-phone and it's practically non-existent on the hilltops.

I have to stand out on the sidewalk to make a call, and even then, I only have three bars. AT&T Customer Service told me, "It's a cellphone. We don't guarantee coverage indoors." WTF? I'm switching to Verizon next week. Anything will be better than AT&T.

I've got the typical iPhone experience - love the phone, hate the network. AT&T coverage is horrendous. Work on mid-Wilshire and there is a huge dead zone around 6th / Fairfax. But, c'mon - let's give AT&T a break... why should we expect them to offer basic coverage in the middle of Los Angeles? It's just such frustrating service. I'm thankful it works in my residence, but just drops calls ALL the time (and not just in the usual canyon spots). Saturday was a perfect example - driving from downtown to Studio on the 101. My call was dropped... wait for it... FOUR times. I just laugh now. The only choice now is which carrier to jump to.

The worst service possible. We would not get calls shown on our phones when people call us, and when we call out to other phones, they would have no idea that we tried to call them, no matter where we are. It's the worst when you're out there, trying to meet up with people, and they don't get your calls and you don't receive calls. By far the worst service we've ever experienced on all 3 of our phone lines. Despite numerous attempts of complaints over phone, in store, exchange phones, nothing improves after 6 months since we started service. Just got 2 months of credit back from the manager since they do not waive the cancellation charge, and I'm going to cancel the service today. DO NOT SWITCH TO AT / T.

i had to get the new 3g data plan as I lost my old I phone in new york and upgraded to the new 1 phone 4. I found myself paying up to $30-$40 more a month.. up to $120. the 3g network is awful! here. dropped calls all over los angeles. hollywood. I am in a 2 year contract and feel stuck. i did everything to try and improve the reception. new sim card. they basically said at at&t. get off the 3g network and use the old edge network. which actually works. but WHY am I paying more for no service. customer service said my problem were solved because it worked on edge. wait, I am paying for a faster 3 g data plan that I can barely use. literally highway robbery, however I probably would have a dropout on the highway! i had less phone dropouts with the original iphone that was almost 3 years old. I love the technology of the I phone and the camera. waiting to see if there is an improvement with verizon. wish I could jailbreak for T-Mobile but I see that the service is not that great. so considering breaking contract to get a regular Verizon or Sprint phone here. oh, I also work in new york. and I see it's having problems there. they have no problem taking our money. amazing. T-Mobile had bad service in new york too. oh well. trying to get out of at&t. it's a total sham.

Sometimes I have all the bars so I know it's possible to get a signal, but then a second later we're back to nothing. I can rarely use it for a telephone, I even dowloaded the skype app to make calls. Shame. I love the iphone and I was happy with AT&T which I've had since 1999. My contract is over. Adios AT&T. Oddly at every other major airport in the USA I can get great phone calls and actually use the data plan I pay through the nose for. Hell I can even get reception in a tunnel under water in New York... but yet the best signal I can get at LAX is gprs fluctuating to edge... forget 3g! I have traveled alot and ATT can brag all they want as long as Los Angeles is not included in that reference. Its like they upgraded every other place in the US but Los Angeles.

AT&T is the worse cell phone service provider. It sucks that they sell the Microcell 3G to get better service at $170. Why wouldn't they just fix their service instead of having consumers buy additional equipment for better service? To make matters worse, I purchased the Microcell and it worked for 28 days and no longer worked since then. I spoke with 14 customer service reps in regards to the problems that I was having and it was the worse customer service that I have ever experienced. I was even on hold for 28 minutes and 44 seconds before I even was able to speak to a customer service agent. I put up with their bad service for 10 years and the only reason why I have stayed with them is because of the iPhone. My contract has ended and I don't even care about the iPhone. What's the point of having a iPhone when you can't make calls? DO NOT GET AT&T!

Reception bars do not tell the whole story. Okay, the reception here, according to my iPhone is just fine. I always get 4 bars or better. However, during the day downtown, I basically can't use the phone. All calls will get dropped within 1 to 3 minutes and data access is slow to non-functional. In the evenings, however, things are fine... no dropped calls and decent data access. So, the problem here isn't reception. The problem is network capacity. During the day downtown, there are just too many people trying to use the network at the same time and performance is horrible. Ever try to make a call at a sports event or another area with many many people? Doesn't work very well does it... . I imagine this phenomenon is similar in other areas of LA.

I live smack dab in the middle of Hollywood USA, one of the largest cities on the planet, and I am CONSTANTLY dropping calls, losing all signal bars, and unable to connect via 3G with my AT&T iPhone. Driving down Fountain and Sunset Blvds, there are pockets of zero-bar no-service, for absolutely no reason. I would understand if I was up in the hills or something, but we're talking the middle of the city. WTF? I for one am counting down the days til iPhone comes out for Verizon, I used to be with them (til the iphone came out) and would go back in a hot second. It will be interesting to see what AT&T tries to do to retain the mass exodus of iPhone users who have been sick and tired of crappy service for years now; they've had plenty of time to make it right and they chose not to, so lets hope it helps drive them out of business!

As always, the call never rang on my iPhone and I received the voicemail alert one hour later. ONE HOUR later. I was outside too, not on a soundstage (AT&T gets zero reception on soundstages). I returned the call immediately after receiving the voicemail, and had lost the job to someone else, who was able to call back before I was. Unbelievable. How can AT&T claim more bars in more places? More like NO bars in NO places. Especially in Los Angeles. Being able to answer and field calls in this town is crucial to survival. So many people have the iPhone but man having AT&T will cost you. Missing out on a big job or work due to poor cell reception is horrible. My contract is up and I'm about the switch to Verizon. Can't wait until the iPhone becomes available on Verizon.

The only way I can make a call lying on my bed is to contort my body half over the side. It's either that or go outside. My major beef is not so much the dropped calls, but the constant cutting in and out, so my friends get sick of having to repeat everything they say, and only one understand half my msgs. It will be interesting to see what happens - we Westsiders demand good coverage, but no one wants cell towers in their chichi city!

Spotty reception with 1 - 2 bars if you're lucky! With my phone placed in the one spot it can usually hold a signal and with my headset on so I don't move the phone I can use my phone in the house. Move and the call fails. Surprise! Oh and you have to put up with signal quality coming and going because apparently AT&T's cell strength is as good as their DSL speed guarantee... (HA - Liars.) There's NO service from Fairfax to Labrea on Hollywood. NO service around the intersection of Fairfax and Sunset. My contract is up and I'm praying that in the new year Apple will announce they're opening up the phone to other carriers. The MINUTE they do, I'm GONE from AT&T. They suck, they misrepresent everything they are able to provide and get us to pay them for shoddy service all the time. It's not just the cell service! They deserve to go out of business.

well I just had the blackberry bold 9700 the newest blackberry. T-Mobile also has this same blackberry but I decided to get the AT&T version. and I have barely had it for 2 days. and I live in pico rivera california but sometimes travel to east LA n montebello n pico rivera california. ok before I had a g1 with T-Mobile and in all those places I mentioned above T-Mobile never ever dropped a call and their 3G network was extremely fast in those places.. and I always had 2-5 bars of service. I rarely had no service. so my wife decided to switch to AT&T she got an iphone 3Gs n I got the blackberry bold 9700 which I love its an amazing phone. but in those 2 days I had never been so pissed off. I always have crappy signal with AT&T even when I am right outside my blackberry has 1 bar of 3G. n when I try to call I get ''call failed'' automatically. it dont even ring once.. my wife also has the same problems with her iphone. and sometimes its very rare when I have 5 bars of 3G. n when I do I try to call and all da bars go down to zero n again call failed..... then when I press end call I get 5 bars again so I put redial and again call failed.. and when the call finally decides to go tru it only stays connected for a few minutes, the most I have been able to talk is 3 minutes.. then it dropped when I was talking with,my sista and she got mad cause she thought I clicked on her. which I didnt! n it gets worse when I go inside a building like walmart I get no service were T-Mobile had at least 2 bars of service n worked fine.. o also their 3G network is all messed up it never connects even with 5 bars of 3G. n when it finally decides to connect its sooo slow. T-Mobile was waaaaay faster.. so yea ima be canceling this crappy AT&T service

95% of the time I have a good signal ever since I moved here in Santa Monica except for a few times when satellite signal is not at best.I do recommend though for people who are experiencing drop calls to go to a ATT store and have your simcard replaced with a new one for free.ATT produces new simcards that are updated with their new towers and chances are you got a very old simcard.

I really want to upgrade to an iPhone, and the only thing stopping me is this seriously sub-par service. When will AT&T and Apple get a clue? i live in the hollywood hills in a house with one small spot where I can get reception. only reason I have AT&T is due to owning an iphone; but will switch the minute another carrier is added. may even switch phones if I learn that AT&T will maintain exclusivity. I can often drive a miles from labrea and franklin all the way to sunset and fairfax without getting reception. yet I can be in the mountains of california, an area without a dense population, and have perfect reception. AT&T is horrible and APPLE should do right by their loyal customers and eliminate the exclusivity and bring on Verizon or another carrier. if AT&T cant figure out how to bring good coverage to a heavily populated city like los angeles, they dont deserve apples exclusivity on such a popular phone like the iphone. if they lose the exclusivity, watch AT&T stock tumble and fall; just the wake up call they need!

Huge disappointment. After soooo many years with AT&T we are both considering switching to another carrier. I'm not sure why with all of this feedback, they are doing nothing about this! Maybe if enough people abandon ship, they'll finally figure it out.

The WORST service ever... the only reason most people have them is for the I-Phone. I have ONE spot in my entire apartment that I can make a call! HORRIBLE... and the pricing is outrageous compared to the other companies. I wish I had done my research before switching! A lesson learned.

Yesterday I was walking in the neighborhood and saw a sign addressed to fellow AT&T customers. The sign said that AT&T had stopped leasing a tower from T-Mobile in the area. It also said AT&T had no plans to reactivate the tower or increase service in the area unless enough people complained about no service. I called AT&T and their tech people confirmed this. They also told me there were several areas in LA with similar issues. There is no guarantee that service will be restored. Hopefully, enough people will complain to get AT&T to reactivate the tower. Otherwise, they will wave the early termination fee. Which is something. But not great if you just bought an expensive phone...

Used to get one or two bars at home - enough to still get SMS, emails and see when a voicemail had come in. Fair enough for deep canyon living. But as of 2 weeks ago, when I am at home, my Blackberry now reads SOS in place of bars, and callers can't even get through to my voicemail, much less me in person. So after repeated calls to AT&T, they tell me they have changed the coverage in the area 'to improve the overall quality of network coverage'. After some heated discussion, they agreed to release me at no charge from my contract so I can find a cellphone provider that will actually let me use my cell phone in my house... otherwise coverage round town was OK. but useless for living in the hills.

When I moved here, my v557 got GREAT reception with Cingular. 5 bars, no problems. Then after the AT&T merger the signal dropped to 1 bar, constant dropping. Then I lost my antenna on the v557 - and the signal was 5 bars again! When I bought a new antenna, it dropped to 1. So then I would take the antenna out at home and put it in when I left. Now I have a Blackjack and no way to remove the antenna. 1 bar and lots of drops.

They said it was my phone but I beat the system since I tried my old sim card in 2 different phones, and just activated a new sim card in both phones. Still NO reception. I have full bars but everytime I make a call it's Network Busy. Anyway, a customer rep told me once that a "tower was down in TX." I told her I was in LA. She only said that because she saw my area code was from Houston. I'm very very disappointed in Cingular / the "new" AT&T.

Anyone else have this problem that started up last week? The # of reception bars on my phone is always good, but now during every call, the conversation blips out about every 10 seconds. Like someone's tapping a mute button. I can't complain of a dropped call because the call never disconnects, but I have to ask the person I'm talking with to repeat himself every few seconds, which is critically poor for business calls. Same thing happened a year ago, and Cingular had no solution, then problem went away on its own weeks later. Hope this clears up soon.

My husband and I just moved to this area and had zero to two bars both inside and outside the house. It was totally inconsistent. I had T-Mobile and he had Cingular, and we both had different phones. We were reluctant to join Verizon because their phone choices were so awful, and we both really wanted Nokia's. We made one last stop at DialNet on Melrose. Peter (very knowledgeable and honest) suggested we try phones with GSM / GPRS 850. We took home the 6230 and tried it out--it worked perfectly both inside and outside the house, AND have had no dropped calls anywhere so far. After this experience, my recommendation is to forget having to change carriers--just get a phone with GSM / GPRS 850 and hopefully it will work as well as ours--we both have the Nokia 6230 with Cingular providers and are happy to say the problem seems to be solved.

I've used about 5 different phone models. They all work the same. This whole area is a known to be a deadzone for at least Cingular, which I use. Rarely, I can actually get ph call inside my home. Usually I can have flakey service outside my home, sometimes I have to walk a couple blocks to find a spot usuable. A few blocks away and there is great service. It varies street to street, hill to hill. Lately AT&T towers connect to it. Seems this area is in between Cingular and ATT, because it can flip flop minute to minute, or by moving it a couple feet. Calling Cingular over the past few years, they've been saying new towers are on the way... my advice is to never believe any promises / statements. Go with what you can prove works now. Test out services via friends phones.

Over several days, I can't get details, other than work to fix the problem "is in progress." Every time I call them to check to see when I will get service, they insist that I go throught the inane steps noted above. They gave me one month's credit, but that doesnn't get my phone working. She assured me that there were no problems in my area. So why, then, did I have great reception last week and now NOTHING? Talking to the representative from Cingular was like talking to a wall. Ever since the buyout, service sucks, the customer service is no help and have given me two different excuses. I will have full bars and still not able to make a phone call. the service used to be great I don't know what happened. something is fishy.

In order to use this phone at home I have to walk outside into my backyard and try to find a "sweet" spot. Even then I'm lucky to get two bars and it's not unusual for a call to be dropped. Good thing I still have a land line. Am planning on switching to Verizon to see if they are any better.

On my Nokia, there are actually seven bars but 97% of the time, I had six bars. Every now and then it would drop to about four or five and a couple of days I even had all seven. Out of the nine days I was there, I only had three dropped calls, and I talked on my phone A LOT! No offense, but I have no idea what's wrong with these people's phones who got all dropped calls and only 1 bar.

Cingular actually has HORRIBLE reception in the hills above the Hollywood Bowl. But I finally convinced their customer service to switch my phone to AT&T's GSM service (since they're touting the combined forces). Makes a world of difference--no more dropped calls, and 4-5 bars reception.

Where I live just on the edge of the Hollywood Hills above Franklin, the service works fine. If I go one block further uphill, there is no reception. In Beachwod canyon, after a block from Franklin, there is no reception. I get no reception on top of Mt. Hollywood (that was a surprise). I thought after the At&T meger, things would improve, but nope. Consumer Reports says that AT&T is the worse, and just next to it is Cingular.

Driving on Griffith Park Blvd. from Los Feliz Blvd. toward Rowena Ave. I always get dropped. Now that AT&T is part of the picture, you'll usually get a signal about 30 seconds later in the exact same spot. The dropping is very frustrating since I travel this area a lot. Cingular needs to spend some money in the Silverlake / Los Feliz area. It's very difficult to hold an unbroken conversation is this area.

Constantly get dropped on Rowena Av between Hyperion Ave. and Glendale Blvd. This is a very heavily travelled Blvd. I would think that Cingular would spend some bucks here. All around the North end of Silverlake Resevoir is bad to non exsistant. I so wish they would fix this dead spot.

Just switched over to Cingular under the ATT merger. Reception with ATT was non-existent in certain sections of Miracle Mile area, and the reception has NOT improved under Cingular. Dropped calls and very spotty service are the norm, and I can no longer use my phone for business purposes. My girlfriend's Verizon service works very well in almost every area of metro Los Angeles, including the Miracle Mile area.

Cingular says the reception in Silver Lake is "foggy" and I have to say, Silver Lake seems to be the Bermuda Triangle of cell phone reception. I'll dial my cell phone and it'll say "no coverage" when just a few seconds ago standing in the exact same place, it was working fine. Additionally, I used to have a Nokia 6200 (one of the best) which had great reception, and now I have a Nokia 3100 which has bad reception and compounds the Silver Lake fog effect.

I switched from AT&T to Cingular because I was tired of a spending money on a carrier that didn't even get reception at my home. I was also told by Cingular that they were in the process of acquiring AT&T wireless and in doing so would be able to provide better service on a growing basis. What a load of crap! Not only do I no longer get reception at my home, I can't make a call with confidence. 9/10 times I get dropped. Not only is it frustrating, it is embarrassing. I don't care if I have to eat the cost of the phone and the break up. I am sick of this company.

Pretty good. I switched from AT&T GSM which had crap reception on Sony Ericsson T68i. Around the rest of L.A. (particularly driving on freeways), there are spotty / dropout sections where I can always count on conversations taking a repetitive turn (for instance, in residential Santa Monica). But in Silver Lake, I can hold full, uninterrupted conversations while partaking in such rewarding activities as sitting, cooking, showering, etc.

Yeah, I get 2 or 3 bars of reception pretty much everywhere at UCLA except for the elevators or deep within buildings. But this does not mean you will have a clear call or that you will even have a call at all. They drop, don't connect due to too few network sockets, etc. Suck it up and pay the extra for Verizon. Its worth it.
