I really wanted this to work since I am tired of being gouged by Verizon for occasional minute overage--come on, it doesn't cost them anywhere near 40cents / min--it's just entrapment. But sadly, when trying to activate, I could hear the person on the other side, and they couldn't hear me. Tried it twice and had to return the phone. Good thing I didn't cancel my old contract yet.

Service is OK. I know of one 'dead spot' on Pacific between Jones and Taylor. Other than that I've had very few dropped calls. Service coverage goes as far north as Fairfax, but I'm not sure about how far south.

Just about every call I've ever made from my house has been dropped. Sometimes I have to sit right up against the window and hold perfectly still to avoid losing the call, and even that doesn't always guarentee it. And as for when driving down 280 or even 101, don't get me started! Metro PCS is cheap and has unlimited minutes, but it's only worth it if you don't mind re-starting every conversation, and text messages being slower than paper mail.

The phone is nearly unusable in my my own home... More often than not, I need to walk OUTSIDE to make or receive calls.

I have excellent service with Nextel obviously it will drop calls quite frequently in some areas but other major carriers I've had have the same problem in most areas of the city. I'm not sure if it's 3G iDEN or not but the web sure is fast as hell and teathering for a computer works just fine. Sometimes on a low signal texts will send slow. But with iDEN it uses a data connection to send text messages so web doesn't go very fast without a strong signal so that's to be expected but overall great service. Loving Nextel!

I get perfect reception in my neighborhood (8th and Judah)... but for some reason Nextel drops calls around UCSF and Cole Valley. Also, horrible coverage inside buildings in the Castro (even though sidewalk and street reception is good there). Weird.
