Dropped calls inside. Only work near window. Ok outside. This is a dead zone for many carriers I guess. :(

This is ridiculous. I am in Downtown Santa Cruz and I have to leave my building to get even 2 bars of signal. T-Mobile has given me problems in Santa Cruz for as long as I've been here.

I thought I had a bad carrier until I read this site and saw everyone has the same sort of coverage I'm getting. Now I'm even more confused as to which carrier has an advantage here in Santa Cruz. T-Mobile drops maybe one in ten calls on average, sometimes on a roll. There is absolutely no reception within McHenry library, no reception in Hahn student services or Baytree bookstore area. Joe's Pizza is particularly a dead zone. However, luckily, there is great reception in my Oakes Milk apartment complex, although I remember poor hit-or-miss reception in my freshman dorms to the North. I also believe that the financial plan is such that texting is a little expensive so I'm afraid I've racked up a penny too much after getting caught up in conversations with other people who assume I have the same great flat-rate texting service they do.

While I may have the cheapest phone ever built, I get on average 3 bars at Cowell College. Inside buildings I get 0 to 3 bars. In my room 2 bars (by the window).

I've lived all over Santa Cruz - currently on the East side, but I lived on campus, as well as on the West Side. Verizon has a couple dead spots on campus, but from my experience worked better or as well as all other carriers. Excellent reception in W Santa Cruz, Downtown, even by the beach (especially Natural Bridges which can be dodgey for other carriers). Doesn't work in Bonny Doon however. So if you don't head up into the forest that way, its otherwise excellent. Also service has gotten much better over the 17 - no longer drops calls (not that you should be on the phone while driving :P)

I get great reception in my neighborhood in Seabright and throughout the county. Even in remote areax (Mt. Hermon, specifically), my Cingular service is the only one with reception when comparing friends other services. I've been very happy with Cingular in Santa Cruz.

My reception and dropped-call frequency seems poor-to-middling, especially at my house (see location). I understand that my V551 phone is very problematic, with the volume dropping to inaudible often and occasionally sounding normal. I've never dropped my phone. Bad firmware I've read--but it's intolerable and the source of much frustration. I believe otherwise that Cingular provides good coverage around town but again, not where I live. I'm debating a switch to Verizon, which I remember gets high marks locally...
