I live in Gelmarc Towers. I can receive calls but soon after answering I lose the signal. Also, walking up Columbia rd towards 18th street the signal is always sketchy. It is impossible to carry out a conversation. This part of DC is dead zone for ATT service. I have the issue on multiple cell phones.

Live in the Woodner building with a large window facing a 3 walled courtyard that opens up into Rock Creek Park. Can't even hold a call with my face to the glass. I have found one 2 ft. radius when I have between 1 and 2 bars within my apartment. Other than that, my battery gets eaten up and I don't receive calls or texts in my home. Sucks. I'm in yuppieville in a major city, not living in a basement or something, and can't hold a phone call in my home. Verizon iPhone, you win.

On the 4th floor of this old building I get anywhere between 2 and 5 bars on AT&T's 3G network. Calls do get dropped with some regularity, and some don't go through when I dial. Calls coming in sometimes go straight to voicemail even though I supposedly have reception. And as many others have reported, calls routinely get dropped all around the DC area, including driving on the Beltway. Mind boggling for the nation's capital. If I try to check email or go online, especially during working hours, I often get no actual Internet service regardless of how many bars I have, leaving my apps to just spin and spin while they try to connect. I pay for Internet tethering and it's almost useless here. If I turn the 3G network off the extended ("E") network kicks in and I get 5 bars consistently. At that point I can get Internet services, but it C-R-A-W-L-S. Verizon's service was SO MUCH BETTER. Wishing I hadn't just bought my iPhone three weeks before Verizon announced they would start offering iPhone services...

Get zero data reception inside and outside the building - occasionally can roam around different parts of the building or different areas outside the building and get lucky. Forget getting emails or using any apps that require 3G data. Phone calls are a joke - you dial a # and wait for a minute for it to connect, then when you finally do, the call drops within the first 10 minutes 9 times out of ten. If and when Verizon, my old carrier, ever comes out with an iPhone, I will terminate my contract with AT&T immediately.

Reception is awful. Sometimes it works. Often I am bounced off the 3G network. Sometimes I show 5 bars and still have dropped calls, especially in high traffic times. Having dropped calls is the norm, not the exception. The mapping function on the iPhone - which runs through AT&T towers - shows me at the correct address 50% of the time, shows me a couple of miles away on Capitol Hill 30% of the time, and 20% of the time it "thinks" that I am at the District boundary on Southern Avenue, Southeast which is miles away!

Well here it goes again. No Signal, no service, dropped calls, dialing problems, failed calls. Complained to ATT back in Nov 2007 but nothing was done. They came, they tested, they said everything was okay but we still do not get a signal strong enough to reliably use the cell phone. They say it is okay, no problem, but I live here, I know better. Mysteriously, the signal improved over the last year or so to 3 bars fading in and out but service was workable for a while but not great. Now it is April 2009 and over the last week or two, service has deteriorated severely. No signal, no service, one bar, two bars, three bars fading in and out. Can hardly make a call or carry on a conversation. Called ATT support, made a trouble report. We will see what happens. According to ATT I am in a "lite orange zone" on their cellular service map which indicates moderate but acceptable service. Just 200 feet to the north of my location, their map says it is a "dark orange zone" which should mean 5 bars BUT that is not true. Service is bad through out the Glover Park DC neighborhood. I believe that there is a cell site just 0.5 to 0.6 miles to the East - Southeast of here but it is over the top of a gentle hill from here. The tower faces towards the downtown of DC and leaves out Glover Park, Calvert St. (west) Benton St, Beecher St. (west) 41st St, 42nd St, McArthur Blvd, Foxhall Rd, Reservoir, Sibley Hospital, Georgetown University and the lower portion of New Mexico Ave. NW DC PLEASE fix the service. Put in a stronger signal in the Glover Park Neighborhoods west of Wisconsin Ave and West of Tunlaw Rd.NW DC.

Went to the Westin hotel on 14th and M NW, my colleagues with Verizon and Sprint had perfect reception. I had No Network Coverage. I have to say, with my old Nokia I never had the message Emergency Calls Only. Hmmmmmmm. It does have it's benefits though. Since I moved to DC about 9 months ago, I have been regretting my purchase, because my phone doesn't work with any other carriers except T-Mobile (of which I have not heard great things) and I can't have a conversation on this phone inside my house or in my office building. I haven't switched yet is because I use Windows music player and Outlook all the time and I have a 2nd cell from work (Sprint) that gets decent reception. Cingular also works great almost everywhere else in the country, and I travel a fair amount. All the same, maybe I should switch... I know Verizon does well in DC, but does anyone know how well it works in the rest of the country? What about international roaming... ?

Hmm, I'm betting the prior poster lives in my apartment building. I too have a Cingular RazR and get absolutely no recedption in my apartment. Cingular will not waive the early termination fee, even though I have no reception whatsoever, because it's "my problem" that my building has no reception. Mind you, Verizon and T-Mobile phones both get full service in my building. It is very frustrating - it's one thing to be told that you can't get out of a contract because you've moved to the middle of nowhere. But moving within a major metropolitan area to another apartment in the same area? And still being told it's your "problem"? It's reprehensible.

Cingular, however, I can use at home, but I very rarely get the FULL bars. Sometimes I do; sometimes I don't. I travel quite a bit, and my Cingular coverage around the country, from coast to coast, has been GREAT. I think Rock Creek Park and all those tall trees is the reason I cannot get GREAT coverage when I am at home. I think all cell phone coverage sucks a big weenie in the Chevy Chase / D.C. area.

I concur with the earlier customer's comments about the cellular reception at this address. I became a Cingular customer in October 2005. I didn't want trouble connecting with a new service and phone and was told by Cingular representatives that my model Motorola was known to work in basements had average receptivity. I purchased the phone and the service based on this. Around January 2006 service dropped. I spent months on the phone with Cingular and even time talking to their technicians about the towers. Service reps have been helpful and polite but can't do much except provide minutes back for dropped calls. They claim that a structure must have been built between this address and the Cingular tower between this address and the tower; thus, blocking line-of-site. This August 2006, service has been better. Is it cloud coverage boucing better signals back? Perhaps. I drop calls several times every day with Cingular. I hear Verizon works better at this location.

Just upgraded to Cingular GSM from AT&T TDMA in June / July 2006 both pre-paid plans. Until August 2006 coverage at my desk varied but I always got at least 1 bar. As of August 2006 I get "No Network" most of the day. In an office by the window and the signal coverage will be anything from 1 - 5 bars and without moving it will rapidly jump from one to another. It averages 2-3 bars. In the street outside it maxes out at 4, very occassionally 5. In park near Saudi Embassy I get 5 bars, cross to the middle of Virginia Ave. (all of 20 yards) and it immediately drops to 3 bars even though it is still out if the open. I had a similar problem last year and looking at posts on here, I can't help but wonder if every August Cingular works on transmitters before the GW students come back. Of course tech support knows nothing about it and insists that my handset must be faulty and exchanged, but I doubt that's the problem since I can get 5 bars out in the mountains in Front Royal, VA. It seems its either that the towers are over subscribed, or that some have been turned off.

I use to have Sprint, and they only worked on the highways, definately not for camping. Cingular always has good coverage. Verizon in a small town in Iowa had reception, but not cigular. I'm still with Cingular cause they always treat me well (been a customer since 1998). I notice that a lot of Verizon customers have to call back when in the metro, either because the reception is poor or cause it's too loud. I think Verizon has good reception, but Cingular is good. A few years back, Cingular had shoddy reception in Glover Park, but now it seems to be better; either do to towers or switching over to the new band I think GSM. Sprint and T-Mobile are fine for urbanites and highway travelers but not for adventerous people. Verizon and cigular are pretty similar.

Cingular customer service is the only thing worse than its reception. I have to move around the house constantly to get some reception and must keep the conversation short. Cingular will change back to AT&T, but unfortunately it is going to be only a cosmetic change (just a name.) The big brother won't have me for long! Switching to T-Mobile which has improved a lot and does not spy on you while trying to control the internet!

HORRIBLE reception with my Cingular phone in my row house, any floor, near window or not. Calls drop out every 10-15 minutes on average (at least!). Even outside the house on the porch or the sidewalk, signal strength is weak at best. Can't wait til July to switch to Verizon! BTW, not happy with Cingular's customer service since it ate AT&T Wireless, with whom I'd originally signed up. After repeated requests by phone and by e-mail, my bills still get sent to my parents' address in North Carolina.

Cingular is terrible in DC. I drop calls all the time and the signal inside buildings almost non-existing - I'm changing to Verizon when my plan is done in July (YEAH I CAN'T WAIT) By the way Motorola is also been a terrible experience. Either Cingular or the phone drops calls all the time - about 15 to 20 minutes into a conversation!

Standing on the middle of the National Mall, downtown Washington DC, if I am lucky enough to get a bar, it always states Roaming, Roaming? this is home, how can I be roaming in my own home town. The sooner I get rid of Cingular the better, I wish AT&T was back

We were switched from ATT wireless when Cingular bought them. Now, we have virtually no reception in our living room, and moving to the kitchen puts both Nokia and Motorola phones on "Roam". No accountability at all from Cingular, and I don't care where their towers are if they don't give me service. We're stuck until the contract expires, and then, believe me, we'll switch.

No stable signal inside my ground-floor apartment. Will show 1-2 bars but calls are one-sided, too staticky to hear and liable to drop for no reason at all. No reliable coverage between just after Wisconsin along K St.towards 34th; drops unexpectedly every few minutes although clear signal. I like their pricing plans and phones, and they worked great in Boston and Vermont, but Cingular seems to be pretty lousy in the Georgetown area. Switching this weekend now that my contract's up.

Lived there for 1 1 / 2 years and always had trouble with Cingular reception. Static, dropped calls, low signal, etc. It caused me real problems since we did not have a land line in the house and the cell phone reception was completely unreliable. Cingular's customer service was no help, either. I called them many times, and went into stores many times, and they showed me ALL the towers that were nearby --> I shouldn't be having problems there! I am so excited for my contract to finally expire so I can switch to Verizon.

Before this merger, I would always get great reception in my apartment, which has a balcony. After this merger and the conversion of these towers, my reception is spotty to non existant. The phone often switches to ROAM while I'm sitting in the apartment. I have to go outside to make a call on my cell phone. I've also experienced sporadic reception at various other parts of the city.

I used to be an ATT Wireless customer until they merged with Cingular. For the last 2 years, I've had perfect reception in my apartment and around the DC-area. Over 3.5 weeks ago, reception in my apartment dropped along with spotty reception everywhere else, and service has not improved. Cingular has not been helpful only offering an explanation that they're converting old ATT towers -- a process that they don't expect to be completed until November! Plus, they've been less than generous with compensation for a phone that I can't use, not to mention the extra charges that I'm incurring on my home phone. Based on Cingular's refusal to deal with the problem in a customer-friendly way, I do not recommend them.

My Cingular phone service has been terrible ever since I arrived in DC. I had relatively few problems with it in Boston, but my calls are almost always dropped here. I almost always have to call people twice, because the first time they pick up, they can't hear me, or I can't hear them. My calls usually only last for about 4 minutes before they are dropped. The connection (when it's there) is very static. This seems to be a problem all over the city, not just where I am living. I am very disappointed with Cingular.

We're tired of buying calling cards to pay for the long distance we're supposedly already getting with our payment to Cingular. WE'RE SWITCHING! (see earlier posts)

We're tired of not being able to get cell service! Funny, my phone works just about every other place I've tried it, including both coasts, Canada, and various places in between, JUST NOT AT HOME. What gives??

I always have five bars, but the calls drop after two minutes of talking to just about anyone. I had Verizon for a year before this and would recommend its' service. The Cingular service is not nearly as good. I wish I were not locked in for two years - if a cell phone company does not provide the service required of them, one should be able to discontinue service.

I have had sprint,verizon,voicestream,t-mobile and AT&T tdma and gsm phones and by far the at&t's gsm phones are far more reilable when you are talking in the reception catagory in most places that I hav been on the east coast I have had great service with the AT&T network and to be honest I really would have liked it better if AT&T would have bought cingular, becaue Cingular on the other hand has a more (non) customer service here is one example AT&T customer service deparment never closed but not of the merger cingulars customer service department closes at 9p.m. est

I have been using Cingular service for a while. I was using Cingular TDMA service; I never had any problem about this particular area. Recently I have switch to Cingular GSM service. It seem like Cingular GSM coverage is great in out door. But In door single is very week and very bad in certain areas. I work near construction Ave. & 23 rd street NW in Washington D.C. near State department. My Samsung s307 pick-ups very good signal outside in this particular area but inside the building is pretty bad. If I go inside the building about 50 to 100 feet my cell is dead and no service available. It happens to me many building around that corner. I think Cingular should install another GSM tower in that area.
