I'm using two Verizon services from the Dover AFB Eagles Rest guest quarters (Buildings 800 and 801). My cell phone works well indoors in guest rooms with windows to the west, but poorly to not-at-all in rooms facing east. Since Dover AFB is on the Delaware Bay shoreline, I guess that Verizon doesn't position transmission towers that broadcast half their signal into the waters of the bay east of here. The towers are evidently west of here. On the other hand, the Sierra Wireless AirCard 555 adapter and its external antenna in my notebook computer do a much better job picking up the signal. In a room facing east, I get zero bars of signal reception, yet I'm able to log onto the internet with my notebook computer at speeds (nominally 115.2 kbps) exceeding the dialup speeds in my room. (I have to use a roaming 800 number for my Bellsouth ISP while in Delaware.) In a room facing west, I get the full 4 bars deflection of signal strength. Subjectively, I think the download speeds are faster with 4 bars signal strength, but I haven't tested that. Surprisingly, Verizon has much better internet computer connectivity than voice cell phone connectivity at Dover AFB, at least under the conditions of my testing it.
