Alltel by far has the best reception of all the Carriers in the Tampa Bay area. I drive from St. Pete to Tampa everyday and use about 4000 minutes a month and might have 3 dropped calls a month. I can even drive the entire length of the Howard Franklin Bridge without dropping a call. My sister-in-law has Nextel and when I or my wife call her she drops calls constantly. I wouldn't have any other cellular provider than ALLTEL

No problems downtown (even inside Times bldg.) and very good coverage locally in Bay area. However, lost ALL service for 3 days in Charlotte, NC over Memorial Day holiday.

This sucks. My calls get dropped non-stop. It went from being alright, to totally sucking. If you have a business life, don't get t-mobile. It will drop all your important calls.

It's a persistent problem with T-Mobile in my neighborhood, at work, and all the way across the state and up I-95: Voices break up. Calls are dropped unpredictably. I don't know if it is T-Mobile or the Motorola V300. I do know that I have persistently mediocre service with random acts of excellent reception and clarity. FWIW, I tried the ATT GSM last year, and it was far worse. In fact, the calls kept switching to the T-Mobile Tower. Go figure.

Tried Verizon for 10 days. No reception to poor reception, even though they indicated the tower at Coquina Plaza (when did that go up - hadn't noticed it before) is Verizon. Also, poor reception inside in Palm Harbor.

Cingular Orange -Switched to a GAIT tri-mode in February 05. Last Month GSM by the water good to very good, but lose it and pick up TDMA in front of building - below to poor. Totally lose it at Cobia, pick it up again on Elkcam. Service had improved since merger until the past few weeks. This weekend, totally gone. GAIT phone mostly on AMPS (Analog) this weekend. Just got TDMA back a few hours ago, and GSM a 1 / 2 hour ago. GSM signal now about average, worse than last month. Erratic all weekend. Cingular CSR's are not sufficiently well trained to even know what GAIT is, let alone troubleshoot.

Nextel is by far the worst carrier I have ever used. I called to try to find out what I could do about it, the CSR told me that 9 out of 18 towers were out.

Terrible reception outside, no reception inside! GSM service is very poor here, strangely enough, when I'm on the water in the neighborhood, my reception is nearly perfect. It would be nice if they would send some service into this area!

Verizon indicated the tower in the plaza just off the island was theirs, but apparently it is pointed N and W. Signal bars varied dramatically, but had problems making calls even with good signal bars. Would dial, and dial and then call fail many times. Dropped calls frequently. I was very disappointed because I am not far from Cobia Drive. I also found worse reception in my office in Palm Harbor than with my TDMA Cingular phone or TDMA AT&T Free2Go phone. And, worse in Ft. Myers at relative's house. Worked great when I was in San Antonio, TX though! Still looking for a carrier.

Nextel is a joke. Don't fall for the "fun" sounding 'beep beep' feature. Not worth it.

For some reason I have no reception on the hump of the Howard Frankland and the Sunshine Skyway, which is a bit odd as I can see every cell phone tower for 80 miles around. Otherwise my coverage is excellent. I previously had this same problem with Cingular.

Was marginal 3 years ago, then improved. Now with switch to GSM, TDMA declined to poor 95% time, fair 3% and good 2% (usually when "extended"). Another forum had Cingular CSR post info from their maps stating NO TDMA or GSM service for area. The closest "acceptable" as 22 Ave S. Cingular states it must be my "phone" although it performs fine up in Palm Harbor and N. Ft. Myers.

Baywalk / 2nd & 2nd N., Saint Petersburg, FL 33701 |
Sun May 16, 2004 |
I live downtown and used to get reception at Baywalk with AT&T TDMA. And even in the beginning with GSM a year ago it was fine. But in the past six months or so, 9 times out of 10 I do not get a signal in or near Baywalk. Everyone else I know with other carriers gets a signal. Sometimes my phone will search for another provider and end up with "Voicestream" but not often enough. Does this mean TMobile is actually *better* than AT&T?
