Switched from Sprint to Verizon nov. 2913. Reside Kincaid big island. I recommend Verizon over Sprint for this location.

By Magics, Sprint is worthless in Kona. And their so called customer service is a JOKE, less than zero. If you need an official store you have to drive to Hilo. The store in Kona is only a front for selling more junk and collecting money for NOTHING. Get dropped calls from lanai ( only place I can get any reception) Data sucks too. The other day they sent me a text saying I was over on my "anytime minutes" because every call from here is roaming. I am switching back to VERIZON. May cost a little more, but well worth it.

I just got off the phone with AT&T for the third time to complain about the lousy connection. I live in a densely populated area and well over 50% of my calls are dropped! They told me that if I want better reception to go to the AT&T store and purchase a micr-cell booster for 200.00! Are you f'en kidding me!? I have been with them for 10 years, over 15 phone accounts for my businesses. Well I guess Verizon is going to get all of that business now... . DO NOT SIGN UP WITH AT&T, you will regret it if you live in Kona!

Verizon has the best service. All my friends with other cell providers say they wish they were with Verizon

I had poor service before I moved to Kailua Kona from Portland, Oregon. AT&T said it was a tower problem, but couldn't seem to fix it. I moved to Kona April 17 and had good reception for about 2-3 weeks. Hallejulah! Suddenly, though, more than 50% calls are dropped, 80% of the time I cannot connect for phone, text, or Internet. I have logged - I'm not kidding! - 35+ hours with AT&T with Apple trying to solve the problem, have gone into AT&T 4 times and the Apple Store twice. I replaced my SIM twice, done a complete restore 3 times, and APPLE EVEN REPLACED MY iPHONE. I was told by AT&T's Gaylene - well, you only have to keep paying until November (when my plan ends). THanks AT&T - don't YOU have an obligation to, uh, provide actual phone service?

2 Out of 5 (2 stars) | Manukai St., Keauhou | Heeia Way, Kailua Kona, HI 96740 |

I live at Heeia Bay, Keauhou, using an iPhone 3G, with poor reception inside my house, max. 2 bars. Better reception up north such as Kailua Village and Costco. But never 4 or 5 bars! Looking for a new carrier for my iPhone 5... such as Verizon, which is supposed to be far superior in my area according to a friend working at Keauhou Bay. This is September 2012, many reviews are rather old. Who is the best in West Hawaii ?

But will T-Mobile for twenty bucks less a month do the trick?

T-mobile is terrible on the Big Island of Hawaii. Do not get them because nothing works here and I am using their latest "flagship" phone. I am very dissapointed. I have been with them for 7 years and signed back on for another two when I moved to Hawaii but no signal and they are trying to make me pay the cancellation fee and for the rest of the phone. They are definitely not worth it.

I have a really, really old Motorola Razor phone. It's definitely time to update, but I'm not sure what phone is going to work over here on a local network. Here's what's odd. On the old Razor, I have had great reception on the big island, during normal driving around the various cities. (Never tried it out on the ocean, or from Mauna Kea, for ex.) But it's on an 831 (Santa Cruz) area code. I'm wondering if I change to a local area code, if that reception will change? It would be really weird to get great reception on an 831 area code and then swap and get little or no reception on a local code! Suggestions for a new phone upgrade? Mahalo!

I get an average of 1-2 bars at home and at the airport. I asked AT&T why so poor reception and was told it was because they switched and their 3G customers get good reception the rest on their Edge network are S.O.L. Switching to another carrier when my contract is up.

Terrible reception at home..none at Costco and when it is good it doesn't last. I've had T-Mobile for two years, locked into a contract. Opting out early and will avoid the early termination fee because of the poor coverage. You can do the same if your coverage sucks!

It is practically impossible to get any reception in our house. We have to either keep the phone is one specific spot or go outside to get any reception.

T-Mobile is Poop. :(... Out of all my friends and familys phones that includes, AT&T, Cingular and Verizon. My phone seems to always have the least amount of service where ever we go on the Island. It constantly drops calls and goes from full signal to no signal. And this is common amongst my T-Mobile allies. Phone with the best service, Verizon or At&t.

Over the past year AT&T / Cingular service has improved dramatically. I am now able to hold conversation without dropping from Waimea to Kona. My in building coverage is also better now that GSM 850 ha been fully launched.
