Signals fade in an out, calls drop or callers cannot be understood. Problems are with two different types of phones, not just one. We always revert to the land line. Reception seems worse that when we moved in several years ago. Sprint has been working to fix service, but their fixes did not achieve any improvemnt this past month... June 2008.

Reception drops out thru Pali Tunnels and in two areas along H3. Reception in house is hit or miss. I go from 5 bars to none in a split second and then back to 5 and my calls drop about 50% of the time. It is really annoying. I just want to find a carrier that will allow me to get great reception inside my house.

I had Sprint and did _not_ get reception in Lanikai, and my husband does not get coverage with T-Mobile. Cingular DOES give coverage all through Lanikai. The only place I consistently have dropped calls is Town Bound on the Pali between the tunnels and Waokanaka St.

I have to say, Verizon has been terrible, not just in Hawaii but elsewhere on the mainland as well. In Hawaii it is rare that I have over 2 bars and even when I have 4, the person on the other end of the line reports that my voice drops out a lot. While I was originally happy with Verizon customer service (*611) the service I have gotten from the retail stores in Hawaii has been TERRIBLE! Recently, my satisfaction with the *611 support has also dropped! When I first signed up with Verizon, service was decent. Not great, but acceptible. In the past 6 months the quality of service has decreased to be point that my wife and I have to go outside of our apartment to make a call and that doesn't even always work. About 45% of our calls are dropped. I called Verizon support and was told by a representative that they woudl do everything they could to improve service and that, if they were not able to make improvements, I would be released from my serive contract. GREAT! What could be better. It appears I rejoiced too soon. Technicians were sent out to check the signal strength and reported... everything is fine. Funny, I still can't make a call! While the original service rep gave me his direct dial number, I have left 6 messages over the past 3 weeks and have gotten no replies. I have talked to 4 other reps who have given me the standard story that THEY don't have the power to release me from the contract, but that they will talk to their supervisors and get back to me. None have. All in all, I would recommend Hawaii users to avoid Verizon wireless.

Sketchy reception in Maunawili valley, drops the call about 50% of the time. Have to decipher what was said during the time before call is dropped as about half the conversation gets through. T-Mobile doesn't work in Lanikai and drops calls in Nuuanu and Makiki and near the resevoir on the Pali and at the hairpin, as well as near Makapuu and out around Kahuku. I'm not happy with the coverage at all and am looking for a more reliable service provider.

My service with Alltel here in Oahu has been suprisingly good. There is the usual dead spot going over the PALI HWY where the call always drops. I had this contract back in NC and was not able to get out of it when I moved to HI. They said since there was coverage here, that was not an option. Fearing the worst I was very dissapointed, however Alltel has done well here so far. There are times that VM and TM seem to be delayed, but reception in bldgs is full. Hope this helps.

I have used Nextel for 3 years with 3 different phones all over Oahu and have pretty consistent coverage. Coverage seems to be 100% in Kailua, including Enchanted Lake, Olomana and near the Kalaheo / H-3 intersection. The dead spots I've noticed are in Waimea Canyon, some parts of Hauula / Laie, and in the Pali tunnel. My Nextel service works when my friends' phones (T-Mobile and Verizon) don't. I switched to Nextel from AT&T several years ago because my AT&T phone only worked in Honolulu (which was no good because I lived on the North Shore at the time).

Face it: cell phone reception in Hawaii sucks... but it shouldn't. Especially not in places where it could contribute to safety. I can call out on Sprint ( most of the time), but I can't receive calls. Callers report having to leave msgs which I don't even post to my phone unless I go into Honolulu.

Likelike / H3, Kailua, HI 96734 Fri Mar 11, 2005

I live in Aikahi. I have good reception there, better if I'm outside. I have excellent coverage on my commute - H3 to Kamehameha to Likelike to Nimitz, except just OUTSIDE the Kaneohe side of the Wilson tunnel. I have had good reception inside elevators downtown. I also go out to Ewa Beach often but have never considered the reception there. I can make and receive calls, but I also don't know if there are calls that aren't getting through. Regarding ATT, I have the hardest time trying to reach my husband if he's at home. Most of the time I have to leave a message and he can get it when he leaves the house.

Sometimes calls fade in and out. It doesn't drop the calls, but you can hear the people you are talking to fade away and come back. Very strange. Other than that, this service is much better than the ATT phone that I have for work.
