Frequently drop calls in town. No reception in certain areas I regularly travel to and from work. No reception in areas of Cedar Rapids. Several "dead spots". Go with someone else.

Reception actually vaires between 2 to 5 bars. I very rarely have dropped or missed calls. When I do, I am usually in a big building or basement and I don't expect any other carrier to be better in those situations.

Seem to be between towers. 1Bar then 4 bars then back to one. Garbled voice then perfect. We need more towers in Iowa City. All AT&T users should complain. I know its a pain in the A&& but they need to hear it from their users.

I have traveled throughout the US using two different Cingular / AT&t phones. Their service is at best frustrating. I would never go with them again. There are massive dead spots throughout Iowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota (esp. the Twin Cities), DC, Boston and New York. You would think that in the most populace parts of the country the company would be aggressive with ensuring coverage. No such luck. Look forward to either no reception or constant dropped calls-in the network that they claim have the least dropped calls. If this is true, I will be available only via email from now on.

If you would like to waste $70 a month, go with Cingular, now AT&T. In my apartment on Broadway I have used two phones, one being an older Nokia, and another a newer Motorola. Neither of them work. Most of the time there is not even enough reception for incoming calls to ring and the rest of the time they are dropped anyway within seconds. I really enjoy the convenience that cell phones offer-getting to stand outside to get enough reception during conversations is simply wonderful. Do not waste your time with this company. They drop calls everywhere!

Coverage is horrible in our house and spotty around the city and state. As long as you're on a MAJOR highway the coverage is good. I hate the inconsistency.

My Verizon phone constantly drops calls and the reception varies widely throughout town and in building. The problem with Verizon is they don't care about a market this small so they cover it as sparingly as possible. They also have the new phones set to hold the Verizon signal as long as possible, making calls on the fringe of the service area impossible as it won't switch to the much stronger partner network. Verizon is great for any large city but traveling and use here has been horrible. I have friends with the other carriers and from what I've seen I Wireless and US Cellular are by far the best choices for local Iowa coverage. I can't wait for my Verizon contract to be up!

With Cingular GSM, you have to patient I have learned. GSM is superior in audio quality, the problem is the number of towers compared to USCellular / Verizon. I am on the fringe of the east side tower in Iowa City. Audio used to be choppy inside my house due to low signal strength until I modded my V3 to exclude 1 / 2 rate audio codec. This helped immensely where weak signals are common. Most people don't about this, they complain to Cingular about the quality of their audio. Being a hacker by nature, I looked in to this, and Cingular cuts the audio bit rate from about 12 to about 7 in Iowa City so they can stack more calls on their tower. This hoses your audio quality if you are on fringe coverage. With Motorola phones, you can program them to not accept 1 / 2 rate codec... thus ending the choppy audio. Also, stick a Wilson external antenna on the inside of your window from Walcott CB. Be patient with GSM, it will ultimately be the best... especially being able to move SIM cards from phone to phone.

I live on the East Side of Iowa City, right near Scott Blvd. and Court Street. I got absolutely no reception in my basement with my Treo. If I go upstairs, I get maybe 1 or 2 bars, and if I go outside, maybe 2 or 3 bars. My house does sit in a slightly lower part of the area, but it really shouldn't make that much of a difference. If I go a couple blocks in any direction, the coverage is fine. Makes it difficult when the Treo is your business line, and anytime someone calls I have to go racing up stairs before I can answer the phone. Oh well... I'm out of my contract now, and looking at Cingular to replace them. We'll see if they're coverage is any better.
