I'm moving back into the City from the Suburbs. My Verizon service outside of Chicago is fine, no problems. I'm moving to a high rise condo (low floor). Sometimes the phone rings or I can start to make a call inside, but it usually drops within about 30 seconds. The phone can show 5 bars, but as soon as I make a call it drops to zero. Outside, around Dearborn and North, I made a call with very poor transmission and it dropped in mid conversation. Data sometimes works, but not usually. I'm very disappointed. I'm ready for a new phone, but unsure what to do. Maybe it's the "Droid" or maybe the carrier. I'm at a loss.

Awful. Phone varies between 0 and 1 bar. Calls cut in and out on both ends and calls constantly dropped. Had this phone and plan for about 1 1 / 2 years. No improvement during that time, despite refreshing cell tower connection frequently.

Lousy reception in or out of the house. Has been like this for a couple of years, This whole area is bad. I don't understand why Verizon doesn't put up more cell sites, there is plenty of room on the CSX railroad right of way or in the 2 large parks nearby.

At the ground level, calls and texts work flawlessly and data is consistently 1.5Mbps and above with very low latency (in case you're not tech literate, this is very good). In my apartment (over 30 floors up), however, calls often drop. Texts do work no matter what though. Data is a crap shoot up high but that doesn't affect me since I have WiFi. I can say though that no matter where I am in the city (high up, in a basement, or anywhere inbetween) I do not miss calls and I definitely have no trouble texting. There are no "No Service" areas like I used to constantly experience with AT&T.

The LTE signal strength in an area more or less limited to the property of my apartment building is lower than surrounding areas. I verified this with Verizon's LTE coverage map. It literally shows the listed intersection as a lower strength signal than all the surrounding area. My LTE data speeds are usually 6-8Mbps down and about half of that up. I can go just a few blocks and the signal strength is much better. I often get 12-15Mbps down and sometimes 20+Mbps. Good thing I have wifi while I am at home.

Poor LTE reception. Poor 3g reception. Barely any 1x reception. I've observed this with Sprint, Verizon, AT&T and to a slightly lesser extent Tmobile. I've observed this with different phones on each carrier. The are needs a new tower or an upgrade.

Verizon sucks! Barely get reception outside, and can totally forget about reception inside. The minute I hit the door of my building my phone becomes a pretty piece of pink plastic that does nothing but play music. No voice calls, texts and I can forget about web surfing. If you live in the South loop, do yourself a favor and stay away from Verizon. Trying T-Mobile, and so far I love it. Absolutely great reception. Major plus your still in contract with another company, they will give you give you a discount, equal to your termination fee, so that you can switch without losing any money. No Verizon + no termiantion fee+ great company= win win!

Since I moved here my reception is AWFUL! Every call either drops or is a bad connection! I've been fighting with Verizon about it and they refuse to let me out of my contract even though they originally said they would if they proved it was their service! They have admitted this is a bad area but they now say "we don't guarantee our phones to work indoors. We only guarantee outside coverage." They wanted me to buy a booster for the signal and with the discount it was $160! I'm not paying that! I'm just going to change companies as soon as my contract is up and I'll never use them again!

Never have Verizon coverage problems in the Chicago area. Every now and then the phone makes a sound and abruptly drops service but I think it is phone or system update related because the phone makes a sound first. Also works well inside buildings and even my basement at home, although, my Blackberry Pearl was even better. Verizon's expensive and phones other than the Incredible are lame. This has me considering leaving.

I live in the Museum Park area of the South Loop. I was very pleased with Verizon for the 6 or more years that I used them before I moved to this area. I can only use my blackberry while standing in front of the balcony doors and sometime it still drops calls. The only reliable place is actually standing on the balcony. This is very tough to deal with in the colder months.

I get good reception outside and generally all over Chicago. I can talk in the underground train stations but not when on a running train unless it is above ground. I get below average reception in my 1st floor apartment(3 flat). There are certain pockets where I can talk and others where I know I will loose the call. This happens even though I am constantly updating my phone (*228) to make sure the software et all is up to date. The other thing about Verizon is that it is EXPENSIVE and I'm not sure it's worth it. I pay $122 for two lines with no data and 250 text msg-1400 min, 9pm nights, and weekends. Seems like Sprint has better deals but maybe worse service? And T-Mobile is another consideration... .

If the call does go through, it is almost guaranteed to drop within 50 seconds. I have been to Verizon and they have nothing to say about it. Bad reception with verizion all over city. Part of it seems to be reception in chicago. Have had better reception (with same phone) in rural parts of new mexico. calls are dropped every 1-4 minutes. lots of feedback, static, lossyness and reed for repetition all over town. when I lived in the loop I could only make calls from my west facing windowsill- very frustrating. When I can get reception in ukie village / wicker park it is briefly and inaudable, dropping in and out. It seems to be like this all over chicago. In the last two years, I have made one mostly clear call- but I was standing in an open area in the goose island industrial cooridor at the time and don't plan on going back there to make calls. Need a differand carrier and phone.

TERRIBLE reception with Verizon. Roommate has T-Mobile and has no problems. I make a lot of calls for work - today I had 15 dropped calls in a matter of a few hours. I'm getting a landline soon because I can't get out of my contract. I even leave my building and make my calls from the alley now in hopes to get better reception. When in the apartment, there are constant breaks in the reception and I can't hold a conversation. When outside, I usually am able to hold a conversation for about 4 minutes before the call drops without warning. Very strange. No matter how many times I have spoken with Verizon there is nothing they have noted that would cause this; one customer service agent didn't even seem to believe me that this is happening. VERY frusturating. Reception usually fine in downtown loop area, though. Although it would be nice to be able to make calls from my own home!

Everyone must remember the following... 1) Transmission Technology exists in only two forms CDMA (used by Verizon / Sprint), GSM (used by all others). CDMA is a more reliable technology. 2) Brand of phone makes a big difference (switching brands while staying with the same carrier can be significant) My Treo with Verizon works perfectly everywhere.

I just moved from Houston, where Verizon was fantastic. Now, EVERY call is dropped. I am not exaggerating. This is so incredibly annoying since I depend on cell phone for all correspondences with work and friends. There is usually 1 small bar to no bars. Don't bother trying it on the train, you'll get nothing. It has sporadic moments where you will have a 20 min conversation, but wait, no-- it will drop the call the moment you start to trust it. It is completely worthless inside buildings. The power suddenly drops and it turns off. But if you turn it on a minute later it is OK. Weird. Customer service told me to get it serviced. I did. Nothing has changed. I just took a trip back to Houston with it over the weekend, and it worked perfectly. Therefore, I believe that Verizon is full of itself and that they don't have enough coverage for Chicago--they of course blame you or pretend that you have to spend hours at the shop with them or on the phone. Don't bother. Save time and money and just cancel it ASAP. It is worth your money not to feel constantly frustrated.

Live on 30th floor facing the Sears Tower. Get decent reception near my windows (my building is solid concrete) but nothing in hall or elevators. Sometimes bars go from 5 to 1 with no reason - I've seen that is a recurring problem with a lot of people. Communications guy in my office tells me the Sears Tower interferes with cable TV and cell phone reception in the area - something about bursts coming from their HUGE antenna. That seems to make sense to me. But I get really weak reception on the EL and that has nothing to do with it so I think Verizon needs some more repeaters in the area.

Constantly dropping calls inside and outside (today it's raining and keeps going from 2 bars to No Service). Opened 2 "trouble tickets" on this issue and Verizon has confirmed the area has problems. They are attempting to secure roof space on which to erect another tower but have no time frame (was told in no uncertain terms not to hold my breath).

Verizon's service in Wrigleyville is very poor. Have to make important phone calls outside. I will likely be switching carriers when my contract expires.

Never thought I'd ever go back. I called vzw to ask about it, they said I should get my software upgraded, so I took it in. It's current. I guess this area is just dead. and I work for Verizon!

Sheridan / Lawrence, Chicago, IL 60640 Mon Jun 12, 2006

Just moved here and nearly was driven out of the City by Verizon. I was their loyal customer in Colorado for many years, and tried to maintain my loyalty here by working through numerous problems with them. Three weeks into my service and atleast 80% of my calls drop all over the City. Have absoloutely no reception in my neighborhood. Most frustrating has been their horrible customer service. Each time I went instore to try to get some answers, I was handed a card and rudely told to call tech service. Each time I called tech service, they informed me I'd need to go to the store. I sat in the store and called tech service three different times. Each time I called I got a new person, who doesn't know the history of what I've been through, and who has a new "idea" of what may fix my problem. This has become a part-time job for me... calling them, re-explaining my problems, going to the store, testing they're solutions, getting no help. It is BEYOND ridiculous. OH, and when tech support says they'll call you back for a follow-up call... trust me, they won't. Or maybe they will and chances are you don't have a signal.

I think a lot of this has to do with the phone. I live on the first floor of a brick duplex in a high density neighborhood, just blocks from the lake. One of my roommates has Cingular / ATT, and he can't make calls from inside the house. I've always been able to place and recieve calls, but the quality varies drastically. On good days it will be perfect, but on bad days I will have to go outside to be able to converse. For the most part the reception is good enough for short conversations, but I still find myself asking "Can you hear me know?" Time to get with the program, cell phone companies.

First year was fair to poor. Second was abysmal. EVERY call gets dropped. Often no service, broken reception and missing words at least every third sentence. My wife and I share minutes. We cannot ever complete a call from one phone to the other. Support was useless, blaming the phones (which they sold to ues). If something was wrong with the phones they sold us, why wasn't I notified by them? Although Consumer Reports rates them highly for coverage, most of the reviews here say otherwise. I'll try U.S. Cellular and see what happens.

Between 3 and 5 bars inside my building on the first floor with no dropped calls. Between 1 and 3 bars in the basement with occasionally dropped calls and regular cut-outs. Cingular couldn't get a signal ANYWHERE in my building. So, this is a BIG step up, even though I think the call quality (when there was a signal) was better on my Cingular / Sony T616 combo. I always have a full signal in my apartment, and even while in the elevators in my building. Probably have had 5 dropped calls in 3 yrs of service. Customer support has been top-notch for me. For those complaining about bad support try being polite and nice, it goes a long way. As for complaints of bad phone signal / call quality, look into the fairly newer phones. I went from an LG 3200 to my Samsung A890, and the difference is unbelievable. No complaints at all and would recommend Verizon to anybody.

Verizon has to be the worst cell phone provider in the area. You have no idea how often you'll be saying "can you hear me now?" just like their ad campaign. I get no service in my home. I get no service at work. The only time I get service is outdoors, which is all fine and good if I was homeless and unemployed. This is the 6th Samsung a310 they've given me, which is pretty worthless because the phone is a piece of crap. The software glitches are unbelieveable. Half the time I place a call from my phonebook it says it's an invalid number. The phone never rings when someone calls. I get the voicemail instead, and if I'm lucky it's within half an hour of the call. Most of my calls are dropped and the only way people can hear me is if I bend the flip phone almost to it's breaking point. Constant complaints to Verizon result only in a replacement phone which is the exact same model that's giving me problems! It's not just a single phone that's defective but every A310. You'd think after giving me 3 defective phones Verizon would give me a different model, but they would only do that if I renewed my contract. Fat chance of that happening. My 2yr contract just expired and I'm bolting to any other phone company. To everyone else who has Verizon I truly am sorry for you.

Verizon has terrible reception problems in most high-rise buildings. Verizon users at work all have to go outside to talk. We get single-bar signal strength, and cannot send or receive calls much of the time. Many incoming calls go straight to voicemail. Cingular and Nextel users get five and six bar displays on their phones and do not have this problem. Reception at the Merchandise Mart is even worse. Thousands of people use their cell phones successfully on the first and second floors of this building. With Verizon, it's never more than a single-bar display, and often NO RECEPTION. You feel like a jerk trying to make a call while dozens of other people are carrying on cell-phone conversations. Can't wait until the contract is up.
