Zero on first floor, not usable. Get a 1 on second floor if by a window. Works better outside on west side yard. Had to reinstall land line for reliable service. Was much better a year ago, but service has become much worse this year.

According to AT&T's own service group, our neighborhood is in a "good" reception area, one level below "excellent." Apparently "good" means occasionally there is a signal for a brief time. Mostly, there is none. Love the iPhone, but the poor signal is maddening.

I bought an iPhone 3G recently without knowing that AT&T's signal is much worse than expected. On Highcrest from N Alpine to Spring Creek, bars range from 0 to 2, staying at 1 most of the time. In the house, I get 1 bar most of the time if I stay close to windows. Calls need to be made by the east facing window, or for better reception, out in the yard. Text messages are received as long as there is 1 bar. AT&T customer service explained the cell towers close by are being modified for the 3G network. When it will be up and running? Who knows? I may end up bringing the great phone back to switch carriers again if no light is in sight.

My personal cell phone service is through Verizon, who has more consistent quality of service in my area as opposed to Nextel, who carries my work cell phone service. I have never failed to get a signal in this location, whereas Nextel has had many failures (i.e. dropped calls, network busy, etc.). My partner uses T-Mobile, whose service in this area is on par with Nextel (in other words, pathetic). Not to say that the service is perfect, however. I have lost calls from time to time. I have had an occasional loss of signal quality and strength, resulting in choppy voice communication. To be fair, due to the geography in the local area, I realize it is not reasonable to expect perfect service here, as there are too many hills and obstructions.

If you're out in the open between these two locations, service is marginal, with occasional loss of quality. If you're in a building, you may as well find a land line as you will certainly lose your connection at some point. Using the direct connect feature is tedious, as major portions of the conversation are garbled and unintelligible. Verizon has better service in this area, however it too has its shortcomings.
