The 5 bar is quite recent. Generally the past two years it has been 3 bars from my home with poor reception and dropped calls which forced me to use a landline. Like a previous reviewer I too am near the Fox river. Hopefully the 5 bars is not an aberation.

The reception on my Nextel is usually good until I'm in my place of employment (the St. Charles Police Department) which is right downtown along the Fox River. Once inside the building, there are dead spots with calls dropped and discontinued service.

At my work, which is a retail store (Meijer), cell signal is usually 4 to mostly 5 bars (full scale signals) in the parking lot. I get deep inside the store the signals drop to as low as 2 bars, but that is to be expected in a steel and brick building. I had been using Cingular Wireless as my provider before I went with T-Mobile and had a Motorola Startac 7000 series phone. This phone was using TDMA technology. When I got deep inside the store the cell signal would get awful (1, maybe 2 bars). I attribute that to the phone and its technology. Now that the phone I have has GSM technology and am with a different provider, my cell signals are much better.

Extremely poor service! I contacted AT&T about this and they offered to SELL me a micro-cell tower ($200)! I thanked the customer service rep, and asked her to convey to her manager that her employer seems to be confused: "I am NOT the one who is in the business of providing cell signal." :- / I am switching to US Cell today. Friends have highly recommended this service AND have demonstrated consistently reliable service in my home.

I average AT LEAST one dropped call every day. If I find reception that's good enough to maintain a connection, the person on the other line is so garbled, I have to hang up and use my land line.

had Cingular for many yrs then got new "gsm" phones which never worked got excuse after excuse from them including problems with their billing. overcharges watch your bills. The dealer wanted to give me an antenna to attach to a window and plug in to my phone for better reception this is wireless! then switched to Verizon and never a problem anywhere including other states!
