I have to walk all over my yard to find a spot. I can go from 3 bars to zero by taking a couple of steps. I cannot have a conversation for more than 10 minutes before I drop a call.

Virtually no reception on the East Side of Portage. If I can get through to make a call, it drops within 10 seconds. Nextel is also horrible when travelling between Portage and Valpo.

Most of the West side of Portage gets terrible Nextel service, especially once the trees bloom. It is almost impossible to keep a call or Direct Connect while inside a building. Going outside gets OK results, but it defeats the purpose of a mobile phone. Things get even worse on the mid-to southwest sections, where all you can usually get is "No Service".

Local Sprint Vendor promised us a better signal reception in our area. The Sprint coverage map now showed us in a 2-3 signal bar range. All this was false. After several calls to Sprint they sent me an AirWave unit for free. The AirWave device functions like a mini cell phone tower in your home. My signal is always 5 bars and no dropped calls inside the home. However the range appears to be limited to inside the home and no gain outdoors. Anyone having a similar connectivity problem should contact their Sprint CSR and insist on them providing the AirWave unit. Another interesting point is the latest cell phones being provided have dropped the "roam only" feature. It I had that on my new phone I would get a 5 bar signal from a local tower in the area, which I believe comes from a US Cellular tower.

Hamstrom Rd. North of Central, Portage, IN 46368 |

Excellent reception here north of Central. On Central I have about three bars, but along Hamstrom I never have below 4 bars, and most of the time I have 5 or 6 bars. Sprint has great reception in most of Portage.

Willowcreek and Robbins, Portage, IN 46368 |

Really good reception along Robbins Rd.from Willowcreek to Airport. Many houses along this range lose reception because of building materials, but Sprint has clear reception in at least 3 houses (one near Willowcreek, two near Airport) and the doctor's office on Willowcreek. Verizon has dropped calls in this area and suffers from constant signal fading. Nextel is useless and sometimes doesn't even receive a signal in some rooms inside. Sprint works everywhere I have tried it and I am happy with the service because I have not missed ANY calls because of lack of service in this area. Several family members have Nextel and cannot even receive calls. One Verizon phone claimed to have one bar but wouldn't connect to make a call. Sprint is the way to go in this part of town.

Anywhere Near Steel Mills, Portage, IN 46368 |
Mon Dec 05, 2005 |
Some days its 1 bar, other days its searching for signal most of the day. In Portage its ok, but anywhere near the steel mills or power plant in Porter / Chesterton its gets bad. Have heard good things about Verizon, contemplating switching over. Tried Nextel out here, and well just wasnt happy with them at all.
