We have had Cingular / AT&T since 2001. We used to lousy service at our house (on a hill), but had good service in other towns, i.e. Tulsa, Joplin, Wichita, KC. When they bought out Cellular One, our service improved to 5 bars, because there is a tower one mile from our house, as the crow flies. They still have lousy coverage in Cherryvale and parts of Independence.
Sometimes we have 4 bars, sometimes 0 bars. It varies from time to time. We are within 1 air mile of a Cellular One tower, which Cingular tells me that they have rights to use their tower, and still cannot get a full strength signal. Cingular really needs to put up some more towers in Montgomery County, KS.
