I have had Verizon for over 4 years, was elated about alltel / verizon merger. New information I just received is that this area is not going to merge. Verizon roamed off of U.S.Cellular and Altel. With 1 / 2 of the coverage in the area being supplied with roaming from Alltel and Alltel up for sale this coverage temporarily is up in the area. After the service is sold Verizon will recontract the area. This is expected to happen in the next year. Service all over the US and Canada has been superior to all other services I have ever tried...
Have used Alltel for 2 year, previously had Alltel when they switched from Kansas Cellular. Good service throughout the majority if the state of Kansas. A few dead spots along US-400 in Wilson and Greenwood. U-166 and K-99 in Chautauqua County is pretty spotty. You need a hilltop to get 1-2 bars. Works good in Metro areas, but occasionally get hit with roaming charges on National plan.(have to watch the roaming indicator close in Wichita and KC. Much better coverage in SE Kansas than Cingular, comparable to US Cellular for this area.
I have never had any problems with U.S. Cellular, get great reception and no dropped calls. Tried to switch to Cingular a few years back - BIG MISTAKE! Cingular (in this area) sucks - dropped calls, poor signal, couldn't receive calls, etc. you name it. Gladly switched back to U.S. Cellular and have been with them since.
