Doesn't matter how many bars of service you have with this carrier you will have many dropped calls. It's a good thing they credit a minute back to your bill for dropped calls because you are going to need it. Most of the time when you make a call you switch to analog, eating up your battery. I purchased a national plan with no roaming in the U.S. and have had roaming charges on bill while I was in Wichita. When I called about this the service rep asked me if I read the fine print on the coverage map. I am done with Alltel.
I usually get only the bottom bar or two for signal all around town. Best signal around 13th and West St. area, north side of town. There have been some occasions when I will have absolutely zero service for the greater part of the day. I have been told it is my phone, but model but I don't know about that. Thinking about switching to Cingular or T-Mobile here in a couple weeks. I know Sprint here sucks.
Switched from Sprint, having been told GSM would penetrate my house better (near Friends U.) and give me better reception. Nope. One or two stripes in much of my house, and I get in-and-out reception with most calls (at least with Sprint, once I connected, I had a clear call). Seriously thinking about jumping to Verizon now.
This phone and service works when all others fail. I bought this phone new in 2000 after my third year with cellular one / verizon and it's still going stong. I'm still with Verizon because of good reception everywhere I go.
