Recently switched from AT&T and the service is much better. Verizon is the same price as AT&T but the service is much much better. 3G is fast and service is very reliable. The last hurricane that came thru, my friends Verizon phone was the only thing that worked. We love it!

I get amazing reception in New Orleans with Alltel. I rarely ever have had less than two bars anywhere and dropped calls are pretty rare. Even inside an old shotgun house with solid cypress planks in the wall (where my Tracfone that used AT&T gsm and another before that that used t-mobile's networks couldn't ever get a call inside the house, plus it's right next to another similar shaped house) my Alltel cdma phone can get and receive calls reliably.

Always have reception. Except in WalMart. Other than that it depends on the phone I think. My husband has cingular, and he always misses or drops my calls.

Only problem I have had is customer service over the phone. I have had a very big problem with reps giving the incorrect information and not adding the correct features & promotions to the line.

TDMA works great all over southeast Louisiana and south Mississippi and has reliable to excellent service in every city/airport around the country as well as on all the highways and interstates even off in the country it works pretty well. the point is, if you must travel for work, and not always in major cities, then stick with TDMA , GSM is not reliable yet and you will miss important calls due to gaps in coverage

reception on the TDMA network is great all over the westbank and the eastbank of new orleans. only occasional lapses in coverage like algiers near the intersection of woodland and gen. meyers, top of the bridge and a small section of magazine street. not like the gsm coverage which is a joke.

I've had Sprint since before katrina. When the storm hit, AT&T service stuggled but my phone and my wife's phone worked. It allowed us to text and talk to all.

Overall, service is good. I found it essential living in a concrete walled building to have a phone with an external antenna, instead of the built in one that you see with the base Nokia model. The typical Sprint dropped calls applies here, but I seem to get it a bit less. What I get most is the "never processed calls". You dial a number, push send, the timer begins and there is nothing. You hang up and try again, and it goes through. Overall, I have found the Sanyo base / mid phones to be better than the base / mid Nokia phones

Coverage is spectacular now with GSM. A year ago it was a different story. The only place in the city where I consistently drop calls is on I-10 / I-610 merge near City Park. Every time I go through there I drop the call.

I get 2 to 3 bars at Tulane Medical School, and can only call from the side of the building closest to Tulane Ave. At Audubon Park, coverage is usually 3 to 4 bars, but I get more dropped calls, it seems like.

My home has thick brick walls leading to very poor reception inside. Outside it's only a little better, with problems like dropping calls when you turn your head. The only good thing about the old 2G is that the Edge data reception is very reliable: it's not fast but I always have it, sometimes even when there's no voice.

What in the world??? I live in Houston, Texas and my AT&T coverage is a dream. There were a bunch of dead pockets o coverage around New Orleans. Noticeably areas around the French Quarter, Treme and the Garden District. Using any navigtion on my iPhone was truly terrible. It was either way off base or couldn't find my location. I love my iPhone 4 but the AT&T coverage was lousy. My husband's Verizon blackberry worked better and had 5 bars majority of the time in New Orleans.

Reception is very spotty. Sometimes just flat out do not receive calls or texts. The network is very unreliable around New Orleans in general. Would not recommend AT&T to anyone, their service sucks almost as much as their customer service.
