I must just come out and say Nextel is horrible. Before I get into the service / reception, I must just say that even though the Walkie Talkie feature, which is most likely why people buy these phones, is cool, the Nextel phones are gigantic, bulky, the text messaging system is messed up (you rely on the Net so it takes forever and you can't just text from your contacts, you must memorize everyones number except for the 9 or 10 they allow you to put in). The service is horrible everywhere, one minute you have 3 bars, then 2, then 0, then 4, then 1, then No Service, then 2 etc... .and this is only in less than one minute. Not only is having no service annoying, it is dangerous. I have poor service in my house, street, neighborhood etc. I have noticed when I looked at the numbers of bars given to service providers, Nextel was one of the only ones where nobody gave it a 5... at least in my area and a few surrounding cities. You get the vibe that these phones are for businesses and that is why companies workers always have them. I don't know what provider to try. Cingular, Verizon, T Mobile, Sprint (hopefully it doesn't have the same crappy service because of the merger). A long time ago, cell phones would have dead zones and were mainly for outdoor use and not as a sometimes home phone, but I guess Nextel hasn't stepped up to the plate because trees, wires, buildings lower level buildings etc. haven't messed up the other companies.
