Verizon

Just moved to Hagerstown and am sorry to report that I bought my son a new phone days prior to moving. Now I'm stuck with Verizon for 2 years. If I wanted US Cellular as a carrier, I would have contracted with them. Verizon CS says they have several towers here but I have yet to be in an area where I wasn't on an extended network. Hey Verizon dude, no, I CAN'T hear you now!

Extended Network only in Hagerstown (21742). I do get Verizon coverage in 21740. Verizon is adding coverage in Hagerstown so I hope I can get Verizon. I don't live in Western MD, just visit there occasionally.

AT&T has crystal clear call quality and blazing fast data, none of the other carriers can compete, and the price is right.

both calls and data are being carried on ESGN (1x.) NDT testing reveals data throughput of less than 64kbps. Woefully unsatisfactory, even if Verizon traffic is being routed by other carriers.

Verizon used to work super, but it has fallen off badly. Now, I can be in my home and calls will drop off. I used to have 4 bars. I just got a Droid set-up in Frederick today. I drove back home, 21 miles from Frederick, and I have no internet service or wireless data, so I can't get any email, etc. The smartphone is useless to me if I can't receive service. I have been with Verizon for over 10 years, but if I can't get this straightened out, I will have to change carriers.

Verizon doesn't have their own service out here; you are on the "extended network", piggy-backing on US Cellular. So your caller hears the phone ring three times before it rings for you, you have to pick up within 7-9 seconds or you miss the call, and sometimes US Cellular's network is over-taxed and the call doesn't come through to you.

T-Mobile pay-as-you-go. Reception throughout Hagerstown is fine. Most Interstates are fine. Hagerstown to Balto. and Hagerstown into northern VA is fine. No dropped calls. Buy a thousand minutes for $100 with no other fees, taxes, add-ons, monthly charges or contract. Minutes are good for a year and if you don't use it all, it rolls over. T-Mobile has the best deal. We use the phone in Las Vegas and coverage there is also good. However, pay-as-you-go only works off of T-Mobile towers. No roaming.

The entire city has the best coverage area in the 6 years I have had Nextel. I have lived and travelled from Canada to Fla. and it's still the best.

No EV-DO so far? I can't get it even though it says it's here...

Once you start your ascend up 419, forget it! You won't get signal until you are in Thurmont, Blue Ridge Summit, or in Adams County. And sometimes coing off of 419 into 64 you can get spotty service. I will have sometimes 2 bars, 3, or none at all.
