i got better reception on a deserted island, surrounded by deserted islands, in the Bahama islands this winter, with the same service provider. come on folks, we are in the first world here, and not that I begrudge the folks in the bahamas, but they are getting free internet hotspots all over, in remote places, and the phone service is great, what gives?
Several of us who work together have different carriers and here's what I've seen in the real world. Cingular works great in Ellsworth proper but useless anywhere else until you get south of Portland. Bangor is a total waste of time. US Celluar seems to work in Acadia when other phones get no signal. Also seems to pick up better than most driving down east. Problem is dropped calls happen quite often. Not a good choice if you travel nationally. Verizon was best and I was with them for years but thought Cingular would be better for Ellsworth area. Not so, same problems as Verizon locally but Verizon was much better anywhere else but eastern Maine. I'll be switching back especially now that the I-phone is taking up so much band width.
US Cellular reception is the best in the state. I have never dropped a call and they continue to expand their coverage. When I called customer service I got all my questions answered. I will never go back to Cingular again!
We own property on east side of Graham Lake, and have absolutely no reception with Verizon, which is the carrier I use in NYC. Service in Ellsworth--10 miles south of us--is a bit better. Since building a home on the lake, it has cost me a FORTUNE in land lines because my builders cannot communicate with each other. I do not buy the idea that "the mountains are in the way" Manhattan is full of "mountains" and cell service is fair to good. I would gladly let someone put a tower on my land if that would help. The land lines are stupid expensive.
I have Verizon with roaming, which is Cingular up here. Terrible reception, except in Ellsworth downtown. Blue Hill seems pretty good also. Nothing on Acadia.
The phone reception not real bad but I send and recieve alot of text messages with my deaf brother. I changed over from AT&T to Cingular and all of a sudden I cannot hardly get any text messages from anyone but Cingular customers. When I went into the store they pretty much shrug and say just give it time. What is up with that? This company has some serious technical problems if you text message alot beware of cingular!
