US Cellular has been fairly good around the state. Low pats of Surry, the Blue Hill Peninsula, and Deer Isle are spotty, and there are dead areas in the state, but it feels like a land line compared to Cingular.

I get dropped calls and dead spots all over the state, but US Cellular still has performed better than Cingular, which was bordering on useless for reliable communication.

In my house the bars go from 0 - 4 all the time, but when you make a call, it drops to 1 or 0 and you drop the call or it breaks up often. There are a many places in my house that always get 0. I only have two places in my house where I can usually get 1 bar steady. You might get 2 hours on a battery charge if you are talking a lot. Data seems to work fine most of the time but can chew up the battery too. Ellsworth mostly 5 bars, Bangor 5 bars, and Bucksport down town usually 3-4 bars. MDI is spotty. Brooksville / Sedjwick area is mostly 0 bars (while driving).

I use an AT&T iPhone all over the country. In Maine, service has been getting worse. Much of Surry used to be poor but acceptable. Now most of Surry is blacked out. The Bucksport road is spotty. Other cities in the US have been OK, with dropped calls.

Cingular GSM works OK in New York, Portland, much of Rte 95, but is unreliable between 95 and the coast, 95 west, and in most areas downeast. Ellsworth is OK. Surroundinig towns spotty. Cingular said that reception would be better by this summer. I'll probably say the service is not as sold, and try to drop my contract.

Reception at home in Surry is nonexistent. Reception in Ellsworth is patchy. Reception between Surry and Ellsworth and Surry and Blue Hill is poor. Reception on MDI is poor but that was true with ATT and USCellular. Reception between Ellsworth and Bangor is patchy and in Bangor is adequate but I have to dial the 207 area code first (!??). Reception between Ellsworth and Colombia along Rt 1 is ok briefly near Gouldsboro. Service through the Cingular store in Ellsworth is marginally competent at best. Phone service with ATT was better before the ATT / Cingular consolidation. Grr.
