I've been with Alltel for several years and always use Motorola phones (V60, V262, and now E815 and wife uses RAZR). I like the extendible antenna models. Reception isn't perfect, but dependable in Houghton Lake and Roscommon and pretty good on trips to Traverse City and Mio and upper peninsula. Seldom do I need to extend antenna, but sometimes do. Recently bought another E815 on internet as 3rd phone on plan as they are discontinued. Insurance is big rip off. You pay a $50 deductible and they sent me internal antenna phone. I sent it back, bought the new E815 on internet and canceled ins.

fair reception but a terrible company I let my kids talk me into texting 4 days after sign up I checked the messages and Alltel said they were already over, mind you I never have a problem with the kilds and phone calls so I requested the numbers to check if they were billing the texting right and they told me if I wanted the numbers I would have to supena them. I asked for a supervisor and they hung up I can't wait to change companies!

Alltel works awesome in the Houghton Lake area, and throughout northern Michigan for that matter. I have had Sprint, and my wife had Nextel, and both are crap when you get away from the major roads. My Alltel has worked the best and I travel a lot. My mom has an Alltel and my dad has a Nextel and she has service on her phone pretty much wherever his Nextel does not. They travel to Alaska, Texas, Wyoming, N. Dakota, and Maine every year and Alltel (thanks much in part to sharing towers with Verizon) has proven to be very reliable.

Don't even bother with Sprint PCS in the Houghton Lake area. I could barely get one bar of service on the NE side.

This is for my 92 year old mother's summer cottage. Signal is very erratic and sometimes doesn't work at all. Since she is sometimes in her cottage at night by herself, this is a worry; therefore, she pays a lot for her land line phone, a high monthly charge the full year, especially for someone on a limited income. We need reliable coverage for any emergency.
