Signal strength has improved where I live - I can pretty consistently get ONE bar inside the house, but that has been enough to make and receive calls. It helps if I move closer to my south window, or go outside. At my MSU office, I have all five bars, but just down the hall, in classrooms, back to 1-2 bars, or nothing at times. Buildings put up a lot of interference, but many times that's where you are when you need to call out! My family and friends with Verizon say its better some places, but there are dead zones right around Lansing with both carriers - probably all carriers! Give me Richard Diamond's car phone! He never had a problem getting a hold of that leggy receptionist! (1950s TV, y'all). Next phone - iPhone, maybe. AT&T? Verizon? Both political bastids, so...

I get full coverage anywhere in this town. I don't loose a bar when I'm in the basement. I think it's the phone more than the carrier. I hear Samsumg and LG are known for good antennas. I used to have a Nokia that went down to 1 bar in Eaton Rapids, my newer phones do 3 bars.

The network seems to have gotten better in the past few years. I used to use and Samsung D807 and got great reception. I also had great reception on a Samsung Sync. Recently I upgraded to a Samsung A777. It is difficult to find an area where I get less than full strength. I'm even getting good coverage inside the locker room at the Y.

T-Mobile and Cingular both use the same towers around here. I'm in a bad spot for both of them. Ballard Rd off Jolly. 1-2 bars outside my house on a good day. Inside my alumminum siding house maybe 1 bar..:(

No reception in the building; but perfect once I step outside. Never had any problems with my NEXTEL in the building though.

never had any problems with reception in town, and up north (in michigan north of clare) I tend to have a good signal when friends with Verizon have no signal whatsoever.

I went all-celluar back in 2001, and it's been a rough ride. I started with a Sprint phone that worked great on the highway, but didn't work at all at any distance over two miles from a tower. It also didn't work at my house (I live about 1 mile south of 496). Then I went to Verizon in 2002 and had intermittent signal issues - no signal, dropped calls, etc. Plus, their notification of voicemails was very bad. I once did a test where someone left me a voicemail message and I deliberately didn't call my voicemail service. Over two weeks passed, and I never did get a notificaiton on my phone that I had a message waiting. In 2003 I went to T-Mobile and had even more signal issues than with Verizon. In 2004 I went to AT&T / Cingular and am still having signal problems. I'll pick up the phone and have a 5 bar signal. By the time I'm done dialing I'll have 0 bars and the call won't go through. On any call over five minutes, there's an 80% chance of the conversation "static-ing out", and a 60% chance of the call dropping altogether. Six months after switching, the Cingular store showed me a street-level map that shows my house sits on the edge of a large "poor coverage area" extending to the S / SW. They say the reason is that the two towers to the NE and NW of me are both aimed to pick up traffic along 496, and the tower south of me is aimed to pick up MLK traffic. Several "tech support tickets" entered by the AT&T / Cingular staff over the last year have brought no results. They say that they are scheduled to build more towers in "south Lansing", one near the end of 2005 and another sometime in 2006, but of course can make no promises about how these towers will be aimed, or whether they'll do anything about the Cingular cellular hole that I live in. BTW, they also said that T-Mobile "makes use of" AT&T / Cingular's towers, so that would explain why both companies have equally bad reception at my home. I must admit, away from my house I generally have a strong signal. But that was one of my main reasons for going cellular - I only want one phone bill! My Cingular contract is up at the end of August, and I'm debating if I should switch carriers. If I stay with Cingular, it will be several months before I have any hope of an improvement (assuming their new tower happens to do me any good). I want national roaming, so I'm going to have to go with a national carrier, which from what I've seem means either Sprint or Verizon. Verizon's street-level map shows complete coverage at my house. Sprint doesn't have street-level maps and just laughs and says "of course we have coverage at your house". I don't know if either company has improved since my use of their services a couple years ago. I want to have a cell phone for traveling, so going back to a in-house "land line" would be a last resort since I would now have two phone bills. I hope this doesn't sound too much like a rant, and hope it's helpful to someone.
