Cell One has always had the best coverage in this area (last 5 years that I've known). When I switched to GSM the coverage was good, but the amount of dropped calls and "Network Busy" messages were awful-that was 2 years ago, it's much better now. Coverage in UMD and other buildings is great, I always have service.

BEWARE if you want to use SPRINT PCS at UMD - it won't work in the Library and in most buildings. You have to go outside. I can't make ar receive any calls unless outside, and even then, it's iffy. I tried several phones, none worked. They work great anywhere but UMD. They said they wre going to put up a tower near Mt. Royal, but it was in the paperwork stage (that was 6 months ago, still no change).

Cell One USED to have good reception, but for the last 6 months their service has gone steadily downhill, especially out in the west end. I have frequent missed calls (no ring, straight to voicemail), circuit busy tones, and dropped calls. I can be 30 seconds into a call and have the signal drop completely, without moving. Dobson has seen fit to do away with their entoire technical support department, so if you do have a problem, you will be hard pressed to have it resolved. In fact, their new policy is to NOT do follow-up calls. The only way to know if your issue is resolved is to check it yourself after 72 hours. I have been researching other providers in the northland now, as my contract with Cell One is up, and I will not renew.

I get no reception inside my house-only 2 bars of analog (which you cannot call or receive calls) and so I can get 1 bar of 1x when I step outside onto my deck, but basically the area out here north of Duluth is somewhat patchy, but not too bad. Around Duluth the reception is fine however.

I've had perfect reception on my Noka 6360 all over downtown Duluth and up through all residental streets up through UMD Campus up past Woodland Ave for the past 1.5 years. I get full signal in a basement office down almost under Superior St.! (by Lake Ave.) My previous Sprint service (silver clamshell Motorola) never worked for me downtown Duluth, or up in residental areas above 4th St. 6th Ave. through 21st Ave. E. was unusable. Even replaced phone, to no avail. Cingular service (New ericsson camera phone) for my roommate around 6th Ave. and 4th St. was absolutely garbage (occasional signal, but guaranteed disconnects most of the time).

I go to Duluth frequently and the T-Mobile GSM coverage is excellent throughout the whole city. I equal or beat my sister's Sprint PCS coverage anywhere in the city. I see that 218 numbers are now available from T-Mobile in Duluth. You won't be dissapointed! GSM is clear and secure. T-Mobile shares Cingular and even some ATT GSM towers throughout the U.S. 50 plus Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Whereas ATT has no GSM roaming agreements in the U.S. Don't believe their M-mode claims because their network is far less substantial. Also, with T-Mobile GSM, you can go virtually anywhere in the world and get service.
