Since the May 22nd Tornado, calls in progress are getting dropped all the time. Reception is good, but in the middle of a conversation, the calls drop. My friend was using his new LG phone, carrier Tracfone, but powered by At&T. Maybe this is the problem, the tower wasn't replaced or maybe the one that services the area needs to be stronger. My friend's main complaint is when he enters his home, his calls are lost. Perhaps this report / comment helps. Thank You. Sincerely, Cherie J.

A phone is supposed is to make and receive calls primarily. Too bad my doesn't, even at home inside or out. Dropped calls. Long lags in connecting, if it doesn't drop them. Even calling ATT and registering a complaint and following up with them to no avail. Get it right ATT and quit lying about covering 97% of America. You owe me a free 3G Microcell. I just want the service that I pay for and was promised.

Constantly getting dropped calls although ATT says a good coverage area. I'll have 5 bars, make a call, and have the bars go to one or none and then the dreaded "Call Failed" message. Customer service has never been helpful - they first maintained it was a hardware problem. Swapped out devices, SIM cards, and the first call made to them to test the replacement phone dropped! ATT, on follow up calls, fixes the problem for a few days and then it reverts!

Ever since the switch from Cingular, my reception is spotty at best. I can get most calls, make most calls, but at least 50% of my calls drop during the conversation. It's not just in my house either, it's everywhere. None of my friends have AT and T and they laugh at how poor my service. Now, not only is my service terrible, but I'm losing friends.

I have been so disappointed in my cell coverage since I moved to this location. I rated it as a 1, but half the time it's at 0. I used to live in downtown Mpls, and I never even considered having a lack of reception here. Since day one it has been absolutely horrible. Over the summer, I had calls that would literally drop every few seconds. I ended up getting a landline just so I can talk on the phone at home. When my contract runs out, I do not think I will renew my service with AT&T. I just think it is ridiculous to not be able to get service from a major carrier in a metropolitan area. Especially considering what I am paying each month and that friends with cheapo prepay phones get excellent coverage here.

Cingular in this area is terrible. Since they made the switch it's been wretched. I am fortunate to get 1 bar in my own house. Certainly nothing in the basement. If I go stand out in the street I will get a max. of 3 bars. Very disgruntling. Customer service with Cingular is also very frustrating. DON'T USE AT&T!

Love my iPhone -- hate the service. AT&T is unbelievably bad here in Linden Hills. I drop calls every five minutes, even when I am standing outside not moving, and away from any trees or overhangs. Lord help me if I am talking to another AT&T customer, as I have had as many as seven drops in five minutes with a friend who also has AT&T. Here is the thing. I am supposedly in AT&Ts best coverage area. Not their better coverage area, or their good coverage area, but their best coverage area. I can only wonder what those other coverage areas would be like. I suggest that if you live around here, you look to another provider.

I use to be with Qwest and always had good reception - but since I got my iphone Im stunned by the number of dropped calls I have with the ATT network - every day, several times a day calls get dropped - I never had this problem with other phones in the past. I'm not sure if it is partly the fault of the iphone but I have a friend who also have an iphone and he experiences the same thing. I live in Summit HOuse Condos which is all concrete and a high-rise and reception in the house it not good at all - better outside for sure - but even then - the dropped calls drive me nuts. But I love the phone too much to part with it right now.

i get no reception in my apartment and must go outside get any reception. Even here, though, 1 out of every 3 calls is dropped. I also get almost no reception at the U of M campus and in several other spots in the cities. I was told that I needed to buy a new phone by the reps in the downtown store because my phone is so old that it will naturally have bad reception. I just moved to the cities three weeks ago and had perfect reception all over the state I previously lived in. I asked friends of mine that work for Cingular in my home state about it and they said that the reps response was more a ploy to get me to get into a new contract or to spend money on a new phone. I will admit that friends with T-Mobile and Verizon report substandard reception in my apartment, but not as many problems with dropped calls and lack of reception as I have.

DO NOT USE AT&T in the Minneapolis Market. I am counting the days to say BYE BYE to AT&T as my contract finally expires December 07. I constantly struggle to get a signal in both uptown and downtown areas. Over the last year I've asked about this at the cingular / att retail kiosks - and even the employees have agreed lots of signal related complaints come through all the time!

I live on the second floor of a duplex and my signal bars fluctuate between 0 and 5. Calls over 5 minutes long get dropped 80% of the time. After going into an At&T store and being (falsely) told that I need to upgrade my phone because it doesn't support the 1900mHz band (it does) they wouldn't register my reception complaint. Bye bye AT&T. I just wish I knew who to get service from. My sister lives nearby at 24th Ave and 38th St.and seems to have good luck with Verizon.

First off, I must say that a short review of comments here shows a marked lack of consideration to which phone people may be using. My personal experience is with Nokia phones, as they seem to be the ones with the greatest battery life, clearest reception quality, and best signal strength. I base this on not just my phones, but the many friends I have who seem to fall for the marketing machine that is Motorola, not to mention the always inexpensive (read also Cheap) Samsung and LG phones. In any case, inevitably my Nokia phones perform superior to any other phone I compare them against in all facets of usage, and I have had them since the old bag phones (yikes!). As for coverage now, I have been an AT&T / Cingular customer for over ten years... I won't say that their coverage has always been perfect- it hasn't- however, the only dead spots I have ever had consistently in the Cities have been in three places (regardless of which Nokia phone I was using at the time): an approximate 1 / 4 mile area in the Plymouth / Maple Grove border along 494 [calls dropped immediately passing through this area - this issue has apparently been resolved as this hasn't happened for a long time now]; inside the Maple Grove Wal-Mart [again, seems to be resolved recently as I am getting decent reception now... also, wouldn't put it past Wal-Mart to somehow purposely block cell reception to prevent competitive price / stock comparisons... LOL!]; and finally (as well as coincidentally?) around the same parallel 1 / 4 mile area as previously mentioned but in the Columbia Heights and Fridley areas along Central Ave. and University Ave. [again calls dropped immediately while driving through there]. Other than these three areas, my coverage as been virtually perfect, outdoors as well as indoors [highrises, apts., underground garages, etc.] and I travel frequently all over the Cities, from Buffalo to Stillwater, from Wyoming to Farmington... . And come to think of it, outside the cities in Minnesota, virtually the entire 35 from TC to Duluth is great (I even was able to make phone calls from the Apostle Islands in Wisconsin on a good day!)

A year ago I loved both Cingular service and reception, I even convinced by poor husband to switch from Sprint to save some $$. For the last year my reception has steadily gone from bad to worse. I used to use my cell phone all the time, close to 1300 minuntes per month. Now my reception is so bad I can't stand to use 350 minutes, and of that probably 80% is spent saying, "What? Hold on, I can't hear you," to the poor victims that dial my cell number. Around 75% of my calls don't go through the first time, around 75% drop completely or go silent for long enough that one of the ends hangs up. I get no reception at the major intersection chosen and so little at my house that I can't use my phone there. I work from home and used to use my cell instead of tying up the home phone, now when people call I ask them to call my house instead.

Cingular had great reception last year. What happened? I have very, very poor reception in my hood (the higest natural point in all of Mpls!). Dropped calls in the home or yard are the norm. Goodbye soon, Cingular! Customer service is so so. They tell you to cycle your phone on and off to reset how it searches for towers (doesn't help), but if you complain, they'll comp you for some minutes. Note to Cingular: Raise the rates, if you have to, but if you don't increase the coverage, I'm gone. Your Cendant discount (Coldwell Banker Burnet) means NOTHING if your network drops 3 out of 4 calls!

I get a loud whir sometimes, clicks, and also some weird problems like voicemail and text messages taking hours to come through. I am shopping for new service and have been so burned that I think I will stick with pay-as-you go because if my new phone is this crummy, I will have to get out of my contract. It's just not worth it.

I recently moved from Ohio to Golden Valley, MN. In Ohio, my Cingular reception was perfect. Never had a problem at work, at home, on the move. Since arriving in Minnesota, my reception has been the worst I've ever experienced in the country (and I travel a lot!) I've contacted Cingular twice, and each time some moron, who thinks he's smarter than me, had tried to give me his sales speech on tower improvements currently in the works, and how AT&T put up that towner that Cingular is currenlty working to convert, etc. It's BS. Cingular does not have its act together in MN; And I'm so disappointed. I have had 6 great years in Ohio. Now, I'm switching ASAP to a carrier with BARS!

This may sound weired to some people that on a cloudy day or in a bad weather I only get one or none bars in the house. I work in Downtown and I always have full bars there. I drive around a lot and there are pockets where I do not get any signal at all in the metro area. The only reason why I went with Cingular is that they had rollover minutes and a majority of my friends have Cingular as well. By the way some people say that Razor does not have a good receptions either and it drops call due to technical issues with this model. Message to Cingular: it is about time to really raise those bars now as you keep saying. If you had you guys for more than a year and trust me I am not going to renew the contract again.

I feel blessed to still have a TDMA Nokia 6560. Best reception hands down in the metro area and I have the best plan available ($35.99 for 900min and free MtoM). I have a Verizon work phone and my wife has a Cingular GSM and the TDMA is still better even though the technology is fading. Unfortunately, good call reception has gave way to downloading Green Day ringtones. Wireless phone technology is going in the wron direction.

Absolutely awful coverage in this area. Spotty at best in area bounded by 54th, Penn, Crosstown and Xerxes. Have called it in and Cingular tells me it's at acceptable coverage levels. BS ! I say.

I've been a cellphone user for 12 years - all with the same number and same carrier. Celllular One > ATT Wireless > Cingular. The phones are cooler, but reception keeps getting noticeably worse. Now we have 3 phones in the house (this plus 2 LG) and none work very well. Dropped calls, static and all around dissatisfaction. I was going to move directly to Verizon, since Consumer Reports says they're generally the best, but this most excellent local forum is changing my mind. T-Mobile? Verizon? Hmmm.

No reception to speak of with Cingular. I get one bar if I'm lucky. My girlfriend has T-Mobile and has never had a drop-out. I would highly recommend against using Cingular in this neighborhood... As soon as my contract ends I'm going to T-Mobile.

People who use Cingular have little to no reception in my building, regardless of the phone type. My co-workers have every other service and none of them have problems (they can even use their phones in the elevators). I am required to put my head against the window in order to make calls with Cingular GSM.

No reception; a year of promises from AT&T Wireless and now Cingular Wireless, but my phone will not ring or hold a randomly available meagre signal long enough to place a call; callers to me get clicks, one in three times they get my voicemail box; voicemail notification does not work; phone does not ring; cannot make calls; tried new phones (tri-band LG and Samsung); no better; why pay $100 a month for a product that does not work; hours and hours on the phone with customer support; NO HELP; Cingular is AWFUL, snake-oil; paid the $200 to get out of contract.

I can be 2 blocks from home and when I dial I can hear whomever is on the other end but they cant hear me. Passing Unity hospital on University my reception breaks up badly My signal strength LEAPS up and down if I walk even a couple of feet I can be in the middle of Super target and it works and inthe parking lot at work and drop a call I have placed repeated calls to Cingular and I get--were converting the towers - be paitient Your phone is low qaulity - buy this $400 and all your problems will be solved If I am callin gin they tell me to go to store, If I am at a store they tell me to call I am at a loss! I think I will try Verizon net, I was going to try Nextel but with the impending merger with Sprint I am a lttle gunshy

Absolutely terrible reception, many dropped calls, calls that can't go through. Steady decline in service / bars since Cingular bought ATT Wireless. Worst during peak usage time (evenings and weekends). Terrible static. When I call Cingular to complain, they tell me to call back on a landline because they can't hear / understand me since I'm breaking up so badly. Also abysmal customer service.

I had hoped that with a new cell phone and switching from AT&T to Cingular the reception would improve. It sucks -- really bad. I cannot hear anyone who calls me on my cell. I cannot hear my voice mail when I check from home. When the power went out in my home because of a storm, I could not use my cell phone to call the electric company. T-Mobile is putting up a tower a few blocks away. I'm praying that AT&T / Cingulary share towers (I think I read somewhere that they do) and that my reception will improve. I love my Treo 650, but it is just as limited as my Nokia 5160 was in terms of reception. I've heard rumors that North Minneapolis was intentionally left with few towers to make it harder for the drug dealers to connect with buyers via their cell phones. Probably just an urban myth, but it sure seems possible--except they all seem to get better reception than I do. They must not use Cingular. I'm bummed that I signed up for 2 years to get the discount on the Treo.

Very bad reception. I think Cingular suck. They are trying to blame my phone for this issue.

Used to have AT&T but with the takeover or whatever with cingular, my service has been horrible. I frequently have no service in the middle of minneapolis, drop at least 1 in 3 calls, and when I get calls its choppy and I can't hear clearly at all. Cingulars customer service blames the frequent droped calls on "needing to restart my phone everyday." Yeah, that really explains why the service had deteriorated over the past few months.

I used to have AT&T but with the takeover by Cingular, I have little to no reception in addition to averaging a droped call every 3 calls. Frequently get no service in the middle of minneapolis.

The entire Plymouth / Wayzata area has pretty good reception, and so has pretty everywhere else I've gone in the area. Even in "dead zones" for everyone else, I still usually get atleast one bar. The only place I haven't had service is in the basement of the high school. No droppped calls or anything yet.

Cingular is famous for poor quality of their GSM service in this area - actually had a Cingular tech support person trying to troubleshoot my problems comment that "the Twin Cities is spotty at best, looks like we've got 1 / 4 the towers we need there" but this is one of those areas where there is NO coverage rather than just garbled speech and dropped calls.

This is awful, I just moved into my place and if I position my fone just right(i'm talking within the mm) I can squeak into the 2 bar range, just enough to send txt messages. This is my house fone so I need to find an antenna adapter.

Terrible reception in this area. Cingular told me there weren't any towers in the area. This, of course, was after I signed up for two year plan... It's shocking that a major company would have a weak spot like this in the middle of a major city. Don't buy Cingular for this neighborhood! (Longfellow)

Reception is okay here except in basements. Typically pull around 3-4 bars at the ground level both indoors and outdoors. This service was formerly AT&T GSM.
