Had Verizon and coverage stunk. I've had Cingular / AT&T for a year and a half and it is superior in coverage. I don't know what the complaints are about in the Asheville area. Nobody has perfect coverage in the mountains, but coverage is very good. I've been out on country roads in WNC and had coverage while my business partners with Verizon had none. And that goes for US Cellular too. Was in a rural area in the western part of the state and had to let my friend make a call because his US Cellular phone didn't have a signal.

There is no Cingular reception from Beaverdam Valley (near Spooks Branch) all the way up the mountain to Town Mountain Rd. This is the area of a new proposed residential development (Bartram's Walk). For anyone planning to work or live in this area, you will need to use Verizon. They have a tower on Elk Mountain Scenic Hwy. that provides a strong signal in this whole area.

Got an Alltel plan earlier this month and coverage has been very good everywhere in Asheville. It's right on par if not better than it was with Verizon when I was with them. I've not had any trouble spots where I couldn't make a call. Currently getting great coverage and more minutes for the price. Full signal at Broadway St., Hendersonville, Biltmore Ave., and generally good coverage overall. Signal does get a little weak (2 bars) around Edgemont Rd. but I can still make and hold onto a call. Not had a dropped call yet. Very happy with Alltel at this point. Happy enough to come online to write a review about it!

None! I can see towers and I can see other people getting calls, but not Alltel. This happened on two visits separated by a year or so. Also, at Asheville airport, nada.

Verizon may work the best in our area, but I frequently have to go to the window or risk a dropped call from home. Service is somewhat spotty, we have terrain issues in avl, I'm not completely satisfied though. One of those, better of the options type thing.

there has not been a reception for atleast several years -would like to know when cell towers go up- because Verizon beats every other service!

Fantastic 5-bar reception downtown for both voice and data. Then you go one block north of 240 and it all disappears. Barely any reception on Charlotte or Merrimon Avenue. The same thing seems to happen south of I-40 on Hendersonville Rd. Halfway to the airport I get an SOS indicator. I wonder if reception is better with another Cingular Blackberry model? I hate to go to Verizon, which is useless outside the U.S.

US Cellular is certainly the best around, better than everyone I know's Verizon excepting a few spots, but then they are approximately the same anyway. Currently just bought a Treo 700p from Sprint, cannot STAND its service, completely worthless and roams more than half the time, rendering its web capability useless. I really hope they have a return policy as I will be going to either Verizon or back to US Cellular (their phone selection SUCKS)

I have service most of the time downtown, but it is very spotty, and I have Many dropped calls. About 50% of my calls are dropped. The further you go out of town, the worse coverage appears to be. That is my experience. I usually drop the call, then call back on my Verizon phone.

All along Hendersonville Rd.reception is great! Verizon is definitely the best as I also have a Cingular phone. My Verizon service does become a little spotty when I go to my apartment about 100 yards east of Hendersonville rd. If inside, I need to be near a window for better reception.
