Alltel
alltel has no office here and can give me no local number. We are switching to verizon. Alltel has had the best reception of all carriers that we have tried (sprint, cingular, at&t). We travel throughout US and it is by far been the best of those. Even picks up in mountains and most of others have real problems

The Charlotte St.end of Murdock is totally dead. Well, okay, maybe not quite totally. If you're parked on the street you can hold an in-progress call until another car passes by. Inside the old brick apartment buildings (first floor), forget it. One tenant had to install a land line to supplement his Verizon service. Otherwise, I get great coverage here in Asheville--except that notorious dead zone on Beaverdam.

In our home, no Cingular service penetrates. In the yard, dropped calls are normal. Only really works on major highways. In the same house Verizon and Sprint phones work fine. We've gone thru 5 different Nokia's and Siemens with no better reception. I recommend Verizon for AVL.

Reception dies at the church just before the firehouse, and will only resume some distance up Webb Cove Rd. The rest of the time is spent bouncing between analog and digital roams (mostly to Verizon, from what I can tell). Don't try to call anyone from the parking lot at Ingle's, either. The other one is on Kimberly Ave., right next to the Grove Park Inn's golf course... dead every single time.

Keep in mind that Sprint goes in and out depending on which side of what hill you're on. I've also noticed a marked tendency for utter signal loss while inside many older homes in the North Asheville area. Even in my house, I'll sometimes roam in the bathroom, while I've normally got 3 to 4 bars throughout the house. Overall, not bad, but they could stand to stuff another couple of building-mounted repeaters around the northern end of town, at the very least.

For some reason when I dialed into voice mail to get my messages, T-Mobile was charging me twice - for 2 calls at the exact same time for the exact same duration. This made me go over my package minutes and I got socked 3 months in a row for overages in whopping amounts. T-Mobile refused to credit me for this problem, but then suddenly after I complained, the double billing stopped. Also, beware if you port your number. They keep charging for a monthly fee even though they've acknowledged your account is closed.

Calls get dropped frequently. Even the salespeople admit there is poor reception in the area.

My service is in asheville yet I have dropped calls in my own house. Which of course is less than two minute drive from the cell phone store.
