Reading all the bad reviews of AT&T has me perplexed. I occasionally have some problem with reception in the basement of my home, but otherwise always have a good signal. I have complete coverage pretty much anywhere in the Triangle. There are a few dead spots in the more isolated areas of Chatham and Orange counties as well, but these are pretty limited.

AT&T reminds me of the guy who use to hid his dingaling in the Junior High dressing room before gym. He was always talking loudly in front of the girls about how big he was, but the truth is AT&T has the worse coverage of any major company out there. That's a shame for Apple. Now Droid and Blackberries have caught up, so there's no reason to go with AT&T.

I pay $80 / mo for my plan and my phone does not work for the few miles around my house. I will sometimes see a bar or two, but it isn't enough for more than a few seconds of phone conversation. I can get out a text message here and there with repeated resend attempts, but sometimes they take hours to come through. I have limited coverage all over Chatham / Orange County except for the few clusters of "civilization" in downtown Carrboro, Chapel Hill, and Pittsboro. I strongly do-not-recommend AT&T unless you live and stay *in* town. I've complained and they've basically said "too bad." Terrible customer service.

Have never had a problem with AT&T (or Cingular, for that matter) around Chapel Hill. Am always using 3G data on my phone, with fast speeds in and around the area. Clear voice quality and rarely dropped calls let me know I picked the right provider, as I often see people on Sprint or Verizon losing calls around campus.

Wonderful reception all throughout campus. I had 4-5 3G bars the entire time and when I switched to EDGE it maintained all 5 bars. Call quality was wonderful and I had no problems in any of the buildings. I was visiting UNC because I will be attending there next year. My parents who have VZW didn't have near the amount of quality service I did. On both phones they had only 1 bar and they said they were having trouble hearing anyone. It seems like anywhere in NC that I've been AT&T has out performed VZW

4-5 bars on 3g. All 5 with EDGE. No problem anywhere on campus and 3g is blazing fast. In Chapel Hill / NC in general AT&T is the only way to go.

I get great reception everywhere on campus even in the dorms. I have 4 / 5 bars everywhere. I transfered from Sprint to AT&T and I love it. My roommate uses Alltel and constantly drops calls in the room.

Just cancelled Cingular contract after having a contract for 7 years. When AT&T went to 10 digit dialing well over a year ago, I lost the signal entirely at my home. Previously had no problems with a signal unless it was storming. Called Cingular only to find that I had never been on a Cingular tower and that Cingular had "lost" their reciprocal agreement with SunCom, the tower that my phone was previously using. Cingular was "very sorry" but I was out of a signal with 1.5 yrs left on a 2 yr contract (that ended today!) Cingular / AT&T coverage is very spotty or non-existent traveling along Jones Ferry Rd, Old Greensboro Hwy, and many of the other "country" roads in western Orange and northern Chatham counties. SunCom claims that I'll have 2-3 bars outside and at least 1-2 bars inside my home. I'll have 15 days to cancel the contract if I have signal issues. Alltel, Sprint, and Verizon do not get a signal in my area. SunCom gets my business, at least for 15 days :+}

Rarely get fewer than 4 or 5 bars. No trouble in elevators or underground. As far as I can tell, the signal from Cingular holds up around Chapel Hill better than my friends with Sprint or Verizon. Many of my friends with T-Mobile are switching and have switched over to Cingular because T-Mobile phones in this area drop calls like two cups with string, if they even receive the call in the first place.

I still have a Verizon family plan with 4 lines, but the reception has been so bad (and so expensive) for the last several months, that I started a new Cingular contract anyway. I really wanted the UMTS pocket PC, and I rationalized the purchase as a "test" to see if Cingular is better than Verizon in this area. Well, it is. I get much better reception at not only my house but also everywhere in the Chapel Hill and Pittsboro areas. I know that with Verizon there are many areas in south Orange / north Chatham counties that will not work. However, with Cingular my new phone works almost everywhere. In addition to the better voice coverage, the Cingular high speed data services are very good. GPRS is everywhere, and the highest speed UMTS coverage is more pervasive that I expected for Chapel Hill. I gave the reception an Average rating, because that is what I get in the area around my house (Verizon is No Reception). However, I would have to give Cingular a Good rating if I consider the general Chapel Hill area. My "test" has been a success, and I anticipate switching all of my phones to Cingular when the Verizon contracts run out.

SunCom - I checked Cingular only because the check boxes don't give an option for SunCom, which is what I have. If you live anywhere in Chapel Hill North, get SunCom. I've been a without a landline for 6+ years, first with ATT then to SunCom. Great reception, go see Sean at the SunCom store near Lowe's and you'll have no complaints.

Phone doesn't work inside the house, barely works outside, frequently won't ring. I switched from Verizon to Cingular several months ago because Cingular had better reception in my house, but service dropped sharply within two months. We are at teh bottom of the hill, where reception has never been good, but I was very disappointed when it got markedly worse.
