I have to say, Verizon has the best signal strength. I have borrowed friend's phones and carried both around on my bike rides out on country roads. Almost every time, Verizon will have signal out in the country and the other phone will not. Only twice in spots down in a valley where I wasn't able to get Verizon signal. Just normal daily use, I never have trouble with dropped calls and signal strength is good, even in building at work near airport, and anywhere in my house. I am thinking of switching kids over to Virgin mobile because Verizon is so darn expensive. I'll keep Verizon for myself, because of my bike rides, but the kids just need good for every day use. I wonder if most people who post here only do so because they are unhappy. Just seems weird that almost all reviews are bad.

Have never had a problem with AT&T (or Cingular, for that matter) around Chapel Hill. Am always using 3G data on my phone, with fast speeds in and around the area. Clear voice quality and rarely dropped calls let me know I picked the right provider, as I often see people on Sprint or Verizon losing calls around campus.

Wonderful reception all throughout campus. I had 4-5 3G bars the entire time and when I switched to EDGE it maintained all 5 bars. Call quality was wonderful and I had no problems in any of the buildings. I was visiting UNC because I will be attending there next year. My parents who have VZW didn't have near the amount of quality service I did. On both phones they had only 1 bar and they said they were having trouble hearing anyone. It seems like anywhere in NC that I've been AT&T has out performed VZW

4-5 bars on 3g. All 5 with EDGE. No problem anywhere on campus and 3g is blazing fast. In Chapel Hill / NC in general AT&T is the only way to go.

Just recently started getting excellent reception from Alltel inside buildings. They must've put up a new tower as I previously got awful (if any reception) even outside in certain areas. I'm happy!

I hadn't really considered Alltel until I really looked into the details of the My Circle thing they're advertising. It turned out to sound like a really good deal, unlimited minutes to any 10 numbers, even landlines. I didn't know anybody else with Alltel but they do have a 15 day trial where they accept returns so I though I'd try it. After trying it for several weeks now, I can honestly say that it's the best service around here. I just switched over from Cingular and kept my number and I have other friends on Verizon and SunCom. And my Alltel phone consistently has a better signal, more bars and clearer sounding calls all over the Chapel Hill and Carrboro area here. It's on a full signal all through the downtown area and even all the residential areas I've been too. The UNC campus was full bars so are all the local shopping centers. More people around here, at least that I know should consider Alltel and that way I wouldn't hear the complaints from everybody I know with SunCom and Verizon. But the plans are good comparably and the service around here is unbeatable. I'd recommend it to all my friends.

Alltel has excellent reception here. I just got on a family plan with them for Christmas about a month ago and I get great reception where I live, all over campus, and through the hospital where I work. I checked this site before I went with Alltel and it seemed like others have problems but there's nowhere I've been anywhere in Chapel Hill where the signal drops to even 1 or 2 bars. All over the university it's covered in 5 bars and 5 bars throughout the city. It drops to 3 at one point heading into Chatham county and that's as low as I've seen it. The My Circle family plan I'm on has free texting and is saving me about $30 / month compared to my older Cingular plan. Reception is even better too and calls are clear, especially indoors it doesn't drop off near as much. I've discovered Alltel is the way to go here.

Rarely get fewer than 4 or 5 bars. No trouble in elevators or underground. As far as I can tell, the signal from Cingular holds up around Chapel Hill better than my friends with Sprint or Verizon. Many of my friends with T-Mobile are switching and have switched over to Cingular because T-Mobile phones in this area drop calls like two cups with string, if they even receive the call in the first place.

SunCom - I checked Cingular only because the check boxes don't give an option for SunCom, which is what I have. If you live anywhere in Chapel Hill North, get SunCom. I've been a without a landline for 6+ years, first with ATT then to SunCom. Great reception, go see Sean at the SunCom store near Lowe's and you'll have no complaints.

Switched to Sprint from Verizon and the service is FANTASTIC! I've not dropped a single call in three months - no question about it, Sprint has superior reception for this town.
