I have to say, Verizon has the best signal strength. I have borrowed friend's phones and carried both around on my bike rides out on country roads. Almost every time, Verizon will have signal out in the country and the other phone will not. Only twice in spots down in a valley where I wasn't able to get Verizon signal. Just normal daily use, I never have trouble with dropped calls and signal strength is good, even in building at work near airport, and anywhere in my house. I am thinking of switching kids over to Virgin mobile because Verizon is so darn expensive. I'll keep Verizon for myself, because of my bike rides, but the kids just need good for every day use. I wonder if most people who post here only do so because they are unhappy. Just seems weird that almost all reviews are bad.

Ok so for students, people who actually know the Chapel Hill layout. Bolinwood Dr. as you some down Hillsborough St. (that huge hill) and towards the end of MLK as you are about to hit 40 and enter the country. Yea reception sucks. Carrboro... zero reception. T-Mobile gets good coverage when on Franklin St. and around campus so I guess that's good. Roomate has ATT and Verizon and they both get better reception around bolinwood than me. Dang it. This is with Nexus One btw.

We switched from AT&T (no signal) to Verizon two years ago. For the first 6 months with Verizon, we had great signal in our neighborhood. For the past 18 months, very poor signal and must go outdoors to use cell phone. Verizon was going to send people out to test the signal, but of course I never heard anything from Verizon. BTW, my neighbors with iPhones still don't have signal with AT&T.

T Mobile is one of the worst companies to have around the surrounding Chapel Hill area, not only do they tell you you should be getting 4 bars in many areas (and this while you're on a buddy's cell phone because you can get any bars) they'll argue with you and This has to be the worst next to verison in our area. Even those piece of crap pay as you call phones get better reception than these companies, maybe if they spent some money on towers and fixing their reception problems instead of hiring celebrities and running ads every 6 seconds they might be able to compete. Switching to Alltel.

Have never had a problem with AT&T (or Cingular, for that matter) around Chapel Hill. Am always using 3G data on my phone, with fast speeds in and around the area. Clear voice quality and rarely dropped calls let me know I picked the right provider, as I often see people on Sprint or Verizon losing calls around campus.

Wonderful reception all throughout campus. I had 4-5 3G bars the entire time and when I switched to EDGE it maintained all 5 bars. Call quality was wonderful and I had no problems in any of the buildings. I was visiting UNC because I will be attending there next year. My parents who have VZW didn't have near the amount of quality service I did. On both phones they had only 1 bar and they said they were having trouble hearing anyone. It seems like anywhere in NC that I've been AT&T has out performed VZW

Alltel has horrrrible service throughout the majority of the UNC-Chapel Hill campus. Most students who come with Alltel have to change... and the company is not doing anything about it soon. I have complained numerous times and they keep telling me they are putting up a tower--which the date gets farther and farther away every time I ask. Not sure about other service providers but I've been through two phones at UNC with Alltel and both have been horrible, inside and outside.
