Perhaps I can take a little of the mystery out of this for you. First, cell towers are at a premium now because no one wants one in their backyard and regulations. Therefore the bigger / richer or one with the longest contract keeps the space. Second, cell signals are not going to conduct through all building materials the same. Signal strength, electrical interference, atmospheric conditions, and terrain all influence the signal. The good news is that if you have one to two bars outside you can buy a repeater antenna for a few hundred dollars that will boost your signal going in and out. There are more towers next to interstates and major roads so if you don't live close to them signal strength will be weaker. Hope this helps some.

You Typically have to go outside to get more than 1 bar. At 10pm I'm not really thrilled about doing this. The calls are dropped frequently. With the growth in the area I'm hoping there will be a tower closer with the upswing in residential development.

I have had Alltel as my cell phone carrier for almost 10 years, and never had any problems or complaints until this year. I don't think the type of phone that I have has anything to do with the service. From Hickory Grove Rd and Lane Rd intersection to the town of Stanley, including the town of Stanley and hwy 27 toward Lincolnton I have no service at all. This is a complete dead zone. Also Spencer Mtn. Rd is a dead zone. Not only that, I don't know if is because of the dead zones, but sometimes my voice mail does not show up on my phone until the next day. Unless they can offer me something better, I will rethink who I will use as my carrier.

Can only use my phone in the house at one spot. I get 1 to 2 bars reception at best. Most calls break up or just get lost. Will be switching carriers when contract expires!

Mt Holly is a Verizon town. The big tower on Highland street is obviously a Verizon tower. 5 bars at home, all the time. The 2128i Nokia works well even with a 1-bar signal. Weird. But great phone, so far, if you don't need cameras, mp3s, and so forth. Great basic phone.

Verizon works well here in this area where we have urban areas and cities surrounded by pockets of rural areas. I have had Cingular and ATT and nothing can top Verizon. I even had Verizon and Cingular at the same time for about a month. There were so many times the Verizon phone would work and Cingular would not. And there were times when both phones worked fine. But there was never a time when the Cingular phone would work and the verizon not. Cingular Wireless is not a terrible carrier, it is actually a pretty good carrier with decent coverage. I feel like I can say this for sure after experimenting with both, that Verizon Wireless is the best wireless carrier in the USA. Among all the other choices for cell providers Cingular is definetily No 2, Cricket (a joke) would be the rock bottom for reception and service.
