Just got AT&T and it is great. Full bars everywhere in town, when headed toward the Hatteras Ferry the signal drops to like 1 bar. Once on the ferry it picks back up. Few dead zones between Hatteras and Nags head and up thru Currituck. Once you get on I 64 the coverage is great. In the Norview Neighborhood of Norfolk right by 5 points the phone drops calls and has virtually no signal inside the house. Janaf area of norfolk has great coverage with the new 4g internet speeds! Much better than verizon.

US cellular is the only carrier that has 3g EVDO here on ocracoke island and it works great! leaving the village, past the campground, coverage is very weak up until the ferry dock that takes you over to hatteras island. The ferry ride is kinda spotty as well, but from there on, its great! all up thru nags head and manteo, and even all over mainland hyde county its just the best cell phone carrier there is! I go up to Norfolk like every weekend, once you get on the currituck bridge, its roaming from there on, (on the Verizon network) Coverage in Norfolk, Chesapeake, Virginia Beach, Portsmouth, and over in Hampton and Newport news is great too! it even works in the Hampton bridge tunnel! Though there is some areas off of centerville turnpike that coverage diminishes but picks back up once you merge back on battlefield blvd.

Sprint out here on ocracoke is a sketchy thing! yesterday I had evdo and today I don't! its always roaming on Alltel or us cellular. I have traveled all over with Sprint and as long as your on a major road or in a semi big town, you are ok. I travel from Ocracoke to norfolk and fredricksberg alot and Sprint always works fine in those two areas. Once you are off the oregon inlet bridge, Sprint has native signal. There's one place through currituck that signal is minimal for like 20 minutes but then it comes right back. It even works in the tunnel that takes you over to hampton and richmond va!

I have Sprint and in hatteras, Alltel launched EV-DO service on one or two of their towers because over on ocracoke island where I live, I got EV-DO on my Sprint phone( it roams on alltel) and I also got some poor evdo service on my laptop connect card from sprint. I hope they come to ocracoke and update the tower and add EVDO, 1xrtt is only like 300 kbps at best.

While this is a Sprint data laptop card, it is using alltel's 3g evdo here in tarboro. With a Sprint phone, when you open up the internet browser, and it connects to the 3g, signal goes to full bars. Once you try and call out, it uses sprint's voice network and only has about 1 or 2 bars. The further I go in my house the worse it gets. The ride on 64 to Raleigh is terrible, you have reception for like 10 minutes and then once you are outside of the town around the interstate, coverage drops off. With Sprint in NC and most of VA, roaming coverage is more prominent. If you buy a Sprint phone in the central NC and southeastern VA (norfolk, va beach and somewhat currituck and all the way down the obx) make sure you put the phone on "automatic" and not "sprint only" because Sprint roams a bunch around here. Once in raleigh, signal is great, however around the blueridge rd area, signal fades.

My wife had a medical emergency today and I had to call 911. The call would not go through. I tried 3 times and the first two I got a recording saying something to the fact that the number I dialed is no longer in service, and the last time I called it did not go through at all. Thanks for the nice guy working in the post office for calling 911 for me... wife ok, taken to Nags Head.
