Service on island is 3 bars; en route to rte 17 ( the major highway down here), I usually go down to one bar and lose service at least twice. I get no reception in my office, which near a major intersection on 17 in Supply, unless I go outside and stand away from the building. I lose service at least twice between Supply and Shallotte, at least twice between Holden Beach and Supply, in Bolivia and Leland en route to Wilmington and for about 50 miles on I40 between Wilmington and Raleigh. So much for "more bars". Some of the problem may be my phone itself, but I have complained to Cingular since I got it and they have insisted that "it is not (their) problem since they dont make the phones and cant possibly know which ones are the best." This is a direct quote from their phone customer service rep. US Cellular, my previous carrier, had outstanding service here with a Motorola phone, with none of the above problems, but they refused to enroll my three children in college at Chapel Hill and had very expensive rate plans.

I've had Sprint service for several years, went with it because it had national coverage esp on most interstates and urban areas. Works fine most of the time but at the beach, I usually have to go out on the deck to get reception. And even then it's not totally reliable. Fortunately it usually will record 'missed calls' if someone tries to call me, so I just go out on the deck, return the call and enjoy the waves and birds. And tease callers about their not being at the beach!

Sprint PCS doesn't work reliably unless I get to the mainland from Holden Beach Island. It's not so hot at my house in North Raleigh (27615) either, unless I'm upstairs.
