i have AT&T and when am at home I now have to bars.and when I am on the phone the call comes in and out. but I have a Alltel tower near my house so am going to good with Alltel because they have the best coverage area in north carolina.but AT&T when they say roaming is free yes it is but I do not want my phone to be roaming I want it to be in the coverage area. but the more I go up germoton road the bars go up to 4bars but the sec I go into stokes county where I have family ther is no coverage at all not even one bar. so at the end of this mouth am making a charge to Alltel [soon to be Verizon wireleess]

Non-existent! Sucks! These two words describe their service or lack thereof both out in the field and technologically perfectly. Inconsistent voicemail, email reception, i.e., I get them on-time, late (like days or weeks later!) or not at all! Dropped calls? At least 3 a day - sometimes the calls just "end" while they are in the process of dialing - how do you like that one? Too many dead zones to speak of. They were once the best in the business, but with all the mergers I really don't know who is any better any more. Had Sprint and had the same problems with them with missed voice mails, text messages, etc. With children you cannot have that kind of lax service.

Comment Edit - on second thought Alltel is the strong carrier in Winston. I would love to switch but can only sign up with ATT,VZW,Sprint, or TMobile through work. Depending on how soon VZW will be able to use Alltel towers after the acquisition, I may just go to them. With Alltel towers, Verizon would become the leader in the Carolinas hands down.

Lived in Aspen Park for many years, generally get good service when driving around town and very strong signals in Raleigh. Commute to Greensboro daily and there are a few deadspots on 40E to Greensboro. Anyway, cannot keep a signal in second story condo to save my life, stepping outside doesn't necessarily help. Girlfriend is going to kill me after all the missed and dropped calls. Tempted to try SunCom, sounds like W-S may be one of their last strong cities. No carrier rules in W-S. I've had several roommates with different service and the only one that had me beat was a SunCom customer, but that was 4 years ago when they had a better reputation.

It doesn't matter where I go the reception is terrible. I switched from what used to be Cingular (which was horrible also) and at first the reception was great. But over the last 6 mos. the service has been a joke! I can sit in my house and watch my phone flip in and out of roam with o moving!

I've had Verizon for many years now and have used a number of different phones from various manufacturers. I always have reception regardless of where I am. This is true throughout the city and county. In fact, I've traveled extensively and have almost never found a place the phone would not work.

Alltel provides a usable to strong signal in 99% of everywhere I go locally and when I travel around the country. Other than a dead spot on Hwy. 52 in a valley near Pilot Mountain and on Hwy. 321 from Boone to Johnson City, that is. (Not to say they don't drop calls at times even with signal, but it's rare.) Plus, their $5.95 per month data / WAP access fee is only a fraction of what the others charge. HOWEVER - starting in January of this year they suddenly moved from having amazing customer service to terrible service. A huge downward spiral into AT&T level incompetence. IF there were another carrier with great signal and cheap data rates, I'd now change in a heartbeat.

Alltel seems to have the best coverage by a couple bars in Forsyth where I work which is one big reason why I switched over. But really all over the area here the coverage is great. At WF and the other campuses here there appears to be towers very near because I'm always on full signal there. Also appears to do better than previous AT&T phone in mall and other locations here. It just seems like the signal doesn't drop off near as much as others indoors. Overall, I'm really happy with coverage. Plans are good too in my comparison. Alltel seems to offer more minutes than other for the price and My Circle, unlimited calling to any 10 numbers was a very good bonus compared to what other providers offered.
