I have been ATT customer since last 4 years. It was good when I was in TX. Since last year, when I moved to Newport, connection has been worst at its best. I have been cursing ATT since last year. I rarely get calls when I am in jersey city. Its bit better in NYC, but still not good. I want to change to Verizon, hope its good though.

The above reviews leave nothing to say. The reception quality is the pits! I get 100% coverage in a third world country like India! AT&T is fleecing the customers for using the iPhone. Their $15 / month data plan is of no use at all in Jersey City where I work. I have a colleague who uses T-Mobile, pays less and gets excellent coverage. AT&T SUCKS BIG TIME!

I use the iPhone 4. It has the worst reception here in Exchange Pl. Jersey City. My Phone battery drains off as it keeps on searching for network. I cant accept any calls when I am in office. If I have to use my cell phone, I have to go down and outside my building to use it. I have been At&T customer for 2 years now. But I hate it now, and to break this stupid contract of theirs I need to pay $250. Please dont use AT&T.

Hamilton Park, Jersey City, NJ 07302 Sat Apr 16, 2011

I stay near Hamilton park on the 2nd floor. If the phone is near the window, I see the bars fluctuating from 1 to 3. If I move to my kitchen, I get nothing. Even when sitting near the window, call quality is extremely poor. Sometimes when I call friends when I am walking outside, I see 5 bars, but it is difficult to make out what they are saying, as if the signal is compressed beyond recognition. I plan to sell my phone, break the contract and switch to Sprint or Verizon.

I can't use my phone in my own home. Calls are patchy, and dropped on CONSTANT basis. Almost every call is dropped, people can't hear me on the other end. All I can use it for is txt and email, useless as a phone... .calls are dropped in the middle of Manhattan, too.l I rely on this phone to find a job and this horrible service already cost me several interviews. I have been AT&T client for 7 years, and services progressively got worse, while fees just got higher. I called and of course got "no problems in the area" response after 30 minutes on the phone second week in the row. AT&T lies make me so angry! If AT&T wants me to pay my bills on time, it should be in its best interest to fix these issues for me, so I can interview and get employed. MY unemployment directly affects AT&T, yet AT&T is telling me to buy some sort of attachment, or charge me a fee for leaving, while being responsible for sh*tty service. AAAAAGH!

I've read the other comments and have to agree. It's utterly ridiculous how bad AT&T service is in the Jersey City area... at least along the water. I don't know if it's only an iPhone problem or not, but just having moved up here I can only say I'm severely disappointed. Not being a New Yorker, you certainly here a lot of bad press about the poor service on the iPhone in Manhattan, but working in Manhattan and living in Jersey City, it's not even comparable... Jersey City is seriously terrible. I love the iPhone but may have to leave it for a different service. The iPhone can be a great gadget, but if ou can't use it as a cell phone what's the point. At times I can talk to someone where I have full 3G service and will instantly lose their call, then it jumps back to full service. A 5 minute call can honestly drop 4 times... pointless!

Is anyone else having problems with AT&T in the Newport area of Jersey City lately? I have an iPhone 4, and just a few days ago (July 14, 2010) my reception, which had previously been 5 bars, now constantly falls to one or two bars or switches to Edge. It's so dramatic, it's almost as if a tower went down. This has nothing to do with the iPhone 4.01 update (which I have not installed).

Short version: Do not get the iPhone in JC- AT&T service renders it useless. Get a iPod touch if you really like the iPhone and stick with Verizon. AT&T is the worst service ever. Period. Long version: I've been with all the major carriers and AT&T is by far the worst connection ever. I switched from Verizon to AT&T for the iPhone. Biggest mistake ever. It is not worth the iPhone. The service is so unreliable and spotty in JC. When it works, it is flat out amazing. Problem is that it rarely works. So 90% of the time in JC you end up with a iPod Touch with a $80 / month fee. The other 10% of the time it works. At work in NYC, the service is improved, but again, the connection is spotty and unreliable at work. AT&T and the iPhone have changed my life- I've gotten yelled at by bosses because calls didn't get through, gotten yelled at by the gf because calls didn't get through, missed out on hanging out with friends because calls didn't get through. And I pay $80 / month for a iPod touch. Life-changing. My recommendation to you is to AVOID AT&T, even at the cost of not getting an iPhone. If you want a iPhone, hope that Apple releases a Verizon version this June. Or stick with an Android phone on Verizon and get a iPod touch. Really. I will wait until June this year and the second the WWDC announcement for the new iPhone finishes, I will CANCEL my AT&T service and sign up with Verizon where one of two things will happen: 1) I will buy a iPhone OR 2) I will buy a Nexus One, HTC incredible, or whatever latest Android handset is available. 3 more months of a iPod touch with a $80 / month fee.

Virtually no coverage at all and if I have a call it drops. When I call AT&T all I am fed are lies. When you speak with any customer service representative or a manager the story why there is no coverage changes each time. I was even told one spring that it was the blooming trees that was creating the problems. The fact is that there are not enough cell towers or enough digital packets for the area. In addition, AT&T does not allow anyone to speak with upper management to discuss these issues and calls to the FCC have resulted in zero being done.

It was the worst mistake I made when I bought IPhone (with ATT connection) in this area! Wanted an IPhone for so song and eventually when I got it I realized I am more frustrated than ever. Almost every call drops. If you are lucky, you would be able to make a call once in a while but rest assured it will be dropped in between the conversation. You cant rely on this service and it is frustrating that ATT has done nothing even when they know about these problems (Guy at ATT store at newport mall told me this ) Please if you want to save yourself from a lot of frustration, dont get ATT, and wait for IPhone to tie up with some other network

By far, the worst cell phone service provider I have seen. I have co-workers that have T-Mobile and Verizon, and there phones work reliably and all of the time. AT&T can barely provide phone service. I rarely have 3G service in the area. Calls always fail. Calls always drop. DO NOT GET AT&T if you are in this area. The iPhone is not worth it. If you want the iPhone and you are in the area, hold out until Apple dumps AT&T. They will, and it will only profit them. If they dump AT&T and go to Verizon, AT&T will go down the tubes, and Verizon will only gain from it.

My phone drops calls almost every 10 minutes, without fail. The signal is chaotic, jumping from full 3G to nothing without warning. I have tried 4 different phones from the iPhone to an old Nokia (brick style) with no luck. I have complained repeatedly to AT&T who have given no help at all, the calls are dropped even when on the line to customer support. I believe that this is a dead zone for all AT&T customers. My roommate has Sprint and has no problem at all though.

Outdoors along the Hudson river, reception is poor and well below average - maybe 1 bar. Inside the buildings, forget about it, reception is near zero. Web surfing speeds are very slow, essentially making the web browser useless. I tried taking my iPhone 3G back to AT&T because of the bum service. They would NOT take it back or provide a refund because they claim there is "adequate" service in the area. My advice is do NOT buy an iPhone if you live / work in Newport. You will not be able to receive calls reliably, and dropped calls are a serious problem. Also, AT&T has the worst customer service, and they will not take a return.

People must realize, that reception DOES depend on the model and quality of phone. My Ericsson Z520A does very well.. but my Motorola V551 blows chunks. I was lucky to keep 2 bars on it. Reception DOES drop to 1 bar at random times, but in general, I get 4-5 bars very consistently. There are a couple of dead-zones in the JC area. Notably along the road into Liberty State Park. Outdoors, my reception is 5 bars, nearly always. Again.. I strongly attribute this to the phone I'm using. I'll never go near Motorola again, because of this.

This map is definitely missing a lot of tower sites in Jersey City. My building has a tower, and I can see at least 5 more cell sites out my window, and none are pictured in the tower map. This became very apparent when Cingular took over my previous service, AT&T Wireless. The only advantage with Cingular is the roll-over minutes.
