I have had Alltel for 10 years (had Sprint for two during this time as well). I love Alltel, I get 4-5 bars here at home, and have even got service where my boyfriends Verizon cell phone did not (out in the middle of no where near Los Alamos and Santa Fe). I get coverage all the way to Santa Fe (on I-25), and all the way to Clovis, NM (I-40, 60 / 84). My Alltel phone also works perfectly well in Clovis. Once in a while Ill have something crazy happen (takes a long time to send or receive a text, etc.) but Alltel is worth the price! Too bad Verizon bought them out, now I am searching for a new cell phone provider.
We live in "town" but somehow fell into a grey area where reception is worthless. Can rarely talk on phone in the house. Drops calls frequently. Many times the incoming calls go right to voicemail without the phone ringing.
In Ventana Ranch no real issues. Inside and out good service, very few dropped calls. I drive through the petroglyphs along Universe / Unser and consistently drop calls as I drive into the lowest point near Unser / Montano. Other than that, my coverage is great.
I live in the area that is NW of Pennsylvania and Montgomery, behind the 7-11 and my service is very crappy. I might get the call or it might not even ring and just go to voicemail, it's about 50 / 50. Plus if I am making an outgoing call it's bound to get dropped if it's over one minute long. The indicator bars go from several to none, multiple times a minute.
About a year ago I had great reception with Alltel. I had good reception everywhere I went, including my apartment. Over the past year my reception has gotten very poor in the Old Town area where I live and. Rural areas where I frequently travel now have no service at all, but previously provided good service. I hate being contractually tied to a phone service that is no longer functioning as it was when I signed the contract.
In my office, there are people with 4 other cell plans which all get great coverage in the building. When my phone rings, I have to run outside to take the call. My 2 year contract is up in a month, and I can't wait to switch. Alltel has treated me very shabbily in addition-cutting off my son's phone (family plan) before we even got a bill. They had $1200 of bogus roaming and LD charges on it, didn't tell us, and cut his phone off when he was traveling without telling any of us they would do it. Straightening it out was a customer "service" nightmare. Oh ya, they aren't national either-we couldn't find stores in NY or DC when we had difficulty on trips there.
In my home I have to find certain places, and then don't even always get service. I miss calls because they don't even ring on the phone-I only detect them when the beep comes for a message. The same thing happens to my babysitter who has just gotten a new phone with Alltel.
The service is great in the foothills. We started with Alltel when we lived in Gallup and have found that the reception across the state is equal to Verizon and surpasses all the others. If you are going to buy phones, you get a big price break by purchasing on-line as opposed to buying from the nearby stores, on Paseo del Norte or even at ABQ Uptown.
I have been really happy with Alltel they arent perfict but they are better then any other carier iv had before, in Pena Blanca Alltel and Cingular are the only cariers that have towers out there not even my freinds Verizon phone worked out there.
