Many dead areas between Albuquerque and Santa Fe. There used to be service there. We also noticed that service is pretty spotty in lots of places along I-40 west and east of Albuquerque. Don't know about South I-25.

3 bars on Verizon. None Smart phones! one phone still on old Alltel sys. With free Internet on a USB cord. Verizon has badly miscalculated area coverage in city. Verizon should never have dropped the old towers.

This area is horrible. On a good day you get 3 bars and 0-1 is the norm. Poor reception, drop calls are what we have to deal with every day. We've contacted Verizon multiple times and they always say improvements are in progress for the area... but it never improves.

I have been reading the service reviews about Verizon and was pleased to hear... it's not just me! I have shared very similar experiences as what several have posted, a 10+ year customer of Verizon and was always happy. My service the last few months has been horrible! Dropping calls in lots of random places around town but can always count on losing a call on Golf Course and on Paseo (not an area I would have considered a dead spot). Calls are jarbled and when it drops its like it holds the call for a few minutes and when someone tries to call me back it goes straight to voicemail. My internet is slow... slow and did I mention SLOW! Inconsistent even though it appears as though I have three bars. I am SO frustrated and don't know what to do. If I call they act like they are doing me a favor by answering the phone and swear I have probably put someone's kid through college with what I have spent on cell bills.

We live near the Tram. Previously, we lived closer to Academy, east of Tramway. My husband and I had Sprint when we first moved here, six years ago, and switched to Verizon after abysmal customer service and only being able to use our phones in one corner of our house. Now, with Verizon, we've gotten great reception. Sometimes on my husband's phone, his calls crackle, but he has a BlackBerry, and it has met the floor many times. About a month ago I started having problems with texting. I didn't get some, or vice versa. I called Verizon and was put in touch with tech support. We went through trouble shooting on my phone. There are some quirks with the Reality, so I wasn't sure if it was the phone. The tech looked up the tower situation here, and found that there was some issues with them and should be resolved within a week, but to call back if not... The last two weeks, at least I hope it is only the last two weeks, the same problem again. Verizon has been very nice so far, getting me in touch with the tech department right away, and trying to figure out what is wrong. Now I am just waiting to find out, but I suspect it has to do with the 4G rollout as previously mentioned, coupled with problems with the phone itself. I will, at the moment, stick with them, because I can still make calls just fine, although my relatives with T-Mobile, Sprint and AT&T have to stand facing east near a window in our guest room in order to use their phones...

Fit to be tied! Have been a Verizon customer for over a decade with fantastic service -- until a month ago. We carry several phones and an air card equaling hundreds of dollars a month for service that now simply does not exist! Dropped calls repeatedly for a two minute conversation. Friends using other carriers are just as frustrated talking with us due to the dropped call issue. Hmmm wonder how that is working for word of mouth referrals. It is not only affecting Verizon customers! I now use a land line to make business calls to avoid a dropped call. Thank goodness I did not remove the land line from our home. If I were a small business how long would I be in business if treated customers as Verizon has done here? It is time Verizon steps up, accepts responsibility, fixes their problem(s) and considers compensates their loyal customers for poor (NO) service.

iPhone 4S
528 / Iris, Albuquerque, NM 87120 Mon Nov 07, 2011

For those of you that live in the greater Albuquerque - Rio Rancho area, I have been a Verizon wireless customer since 2001 and have never seen such problems with the Big Red's service. I have actually just converted 10 family members to Verizon that all had previously been with T-Mobile for 5-13 years. After the iPhone 4S was released they all had to have it and I convinced them that AT&T was not the right service provider to go with and that Verizon was the ultimate wireless service provider. Boy did I stick my foot in my mouth on this one. Just when they all activated there iPhones on October 14th 2011 that is when we got a big slap in the face. We basically all live in the greater Albuquerque and Rio Rancho, NM area and have zero service. This sounds exactly like what AT&T went through when they activated over a million iPhones in 2007. Our 3G and signal strength goes from 1 bar to 4 bars to zero bars all within a few seconds. I am a Network Engineer for a living and I drive all over Albuquereque and I can honestly say that this problem is an issue all throughout the entire city. Being a Network Engineer and being able to understand how networks and the wireless technology work, I put two and two together and came to the conclusion: having a huge amount of new customers added to a network, all while Verizon was in the middle of activating new Altel towers that were purchased back in 2009 and also while Verizon was trying to get ready to roll out there new 4G LTE technology to Albuquerque; these are the reasons why Verizon is having so many issues on there network here in New Mexico. You see everything is always planned logically and theorectically on paper. Many times the numbers do add up on paper and it all makes sense but knowing that it is only planned in THEORY is the key word. Rolling new services out in a production environment instead of a TEST environment is most likely the culprint in this situation. Verizon had problems that they did not anticipate and are now having to backtrack and troubleshoot in a live network which is all affecting the end users which are the Verizon customers. The problem that hit a nerve for me is that I used to have excellent Verizon service at my home. In September 2011 I started to have an extreme disruption in service and had zero service inside of my own home. After submitting a number of call tickets into Verizon there conclusion resulted in letting me know that unfortunately after reconfiguration of the newly aquired Altel towers, my service in my home area is considered 'MARGINAL" service and if I wanted to have better service, I was going have to buy a NETWORK EXTENDER piece of equipment for $299.00 that is not even guaranteed to give me better service. Verizon also had the nerve to say that my house could be effecting the network service(so now I guess wireless service is not even suppose to be used indoors inside the comfort of my own home?), by the way there way I checked and there is zero service in my front yard in my back yard or on the sides of the house. Verizon should have atleast offered this network extender free of cost because they are the cause of my loss of service at my home. I guess Verizon has grown too BIG RED for the customers especially ones like me that have been faithful for 12 + years. This to me is so LUDACRIS that I pay$135.00 a month thinking that I am paying a higher rate than other wireless service providers because Verizon is suppose to have the best network. In the past that has served to be TRUE, but today it seems as though this is the beginning to the end of Verizons great network era. Verizon's customer service used to be excellent and is now sub-par and even rude(much longer wait times also), Network service is non-existent(but to Verizon there are no problems with there network). I am tired of all of the excuses and the run-around, I would just love some straight answers from Verizon and not a bunch of made up stories and lies. Now they are even blaming the problems on my device "iPhone 4S", so how come Sprint and AT&T are not having the same problems around New Mexico if that is the case? I am now in the market for a new wireless service provider. Not happy about it but I can no longer stand behind a company that does not support there customers and there own NETWORK. My home is in Rio Ranch, NM but I work in Albuquerque, NM would anyone be able to let me know how the following wireless service providers networks are around the metro: Sprint, AT&T,T-mobile ????????? I would definitely appreciate the feedback so that I can make an educated decision when I finally choose to switch wireless service providers. I will be taking my 10 family members with me as well as any friends that I can convince to swtich with me. We all need to make a stand just like the OCCUPY movement protests. Corporate greed is in full effect and we as the common folk are being stepped all over. I would not be suprised if my post gets deleted by the BIG RED. P.S. Come switch with me, large numbers gets CORPORATE attention, look what happened with NETFLIX. Thank you!

I've had Verizon for over a decade and always had EXCELLENT service. Since 3 weeks ago, it's nothing but garbled calls and dropped calls. Forget EV bars; it's 1X if anything and it's not doing the job. I'm really disappointed and wonder if it has something to do with the new 4G LTE rollout that happened in this same timeframe. Anybody know anything?

I've had persistent coverage problems that appear like the 3G coverage is in / out. It's extremely apparent in my neighborhood. VZW has been working a trouble ticket for weeks. No credit offered, no relief from my contract with only 2 months to go. I'm fully committed to leaving VZW after 10 years because I can't use my phone in my heavily populated neighborhood in Albuquerque. If they would offer early termination, I'd take it. I have no other choice. My calls for customer service and tech support are only possible using my comcast land line. They are just sucking money out of me hiding behind a contract. If I knew how to get out of the contract (breach? lack of service while accepting payment?) I would. AT&T works fine in my house, proven by other AT&T friends. The problems VZW has are not limited to indoor use. They exist outside, driving, walking, standing still, holding lightening rod, legs crossed... consistently sucks. They will lose a decade customer (24k over 10 years) over this. Sure hope their transition to 4G network offsets the pissed off customer base they are losing.

We've lived here for a year and a half. Within the past 3-4 months, our reception has drastically decreased - from no dropped calls / signal weakness, to constant dropped calls. We now rarely see more than two bars. Verizon says they're sorry but nothing they can do. Could not satisfactorily explain why we used to have great service and don't now.

We have had Verizon for 6 years and we have not ever had an Albuquerque reception problem. We have traveled to many different parts of rural New Mexico and have had good coverage. There were places that were dead spots, but you would expect them to be dead (middle of a canyon, next to mountain, etc.). I think the reception problems people have may sometimes be due to their cell phones rather than their location. From my readings about coverage, it seems Verizon is #1 hands down, then T-Mobile is #2, and AT&T is #3. Disclaimer: We have family that come and visit with their AT&T phones and T-Mobile phones, and they have not had a problem when being here.

Had Sprint for 2 years, and service was adequate in Albuquerque, but almost nonexistant outside of cities, and roaming wasn't included free (69 cents a minute). Switched to Verizon, and have been very impressed, phone works just about everywhere, and no raoming fees, plus I was able to go with a cheaper plan because most people I talk to are already on Verizon, and I get unlimited mobile to mobile to other Verizon customers. I travel a lot, and could only use my Sprint phone in very limited areas, which made it almost useless at times. Though I rarely got dropped calls at home with Sprint, my reception was 3 bars max, with Verizon, it is always very strong. Verzizon has better customer service, customer web site, and seems overall to be much more professional. When I switched, Sprint started offering roaming (as a $5 a month option), but beware that this is limited to no more than 50% of overall minutes used, and they can terminate service if you exceed this. Had to read the fine print very closely for this. Have been a Verizon customer for 3 months now, and no major complaints. They aren't the cheapest, but you get what you pay for.

Verizon is a great serivice. I highly recommend it. However, there is an east-west band of bad reception from Glenwood Hills (east of Tramway on Manitoba) down to Juan Tabo NE. My house, my office and my kid's school are all in this bad area. My calls drop very frequently when I am in this area. In the rest of Albuquerque and across the nation, it is almost always reliable in my experience (except in fringe areas) I would recommend Verizon to anyone who lives in New Mexico and travels outside of the urban areas (such as they are).

This is an update to my 8 / 5 / 2004 review below. I am now using both T-Mobile and VZW (work phone). VZW has put up 2 new towers on lower Tramway (at Menaul and at Lomas) so the reception issue east of Tramway south of Montgomery has been solved. I have also noticed T-Mobile is starting to have service issues it didn't have before... delayed voicemail and text messaging, the network has lost connection with the phone... I think they are having growing pains. VZW has also put up new towers on the West Side (Paradise Hills and Rte 550 near the casino) and will soon in south Rio Rancho, so most of its Albuquerque dead spots are fixed. I still like T-Mobile because it is a little cheaper and still pretty good, but now Verizon is equally good in Albuquerque. Combined with how much larger its network is, I would recommend Verizon Wireless as the best choice for most people.

I have been a Verizon Wireless customer for about 5 years and overall have been very pleased with their reception. The only real trouble is that when I am east of Tramway it's not unusual for calls to drop. I don't believe that this has anything to do with Verizon though; reception for all carriers fades the closer you get to the mountain. however I don't have recent experience with other carriers. I am an outside sales person so I drive all over Albuquerque every day and go to Santa Fe on I-25 once per week. Dropped calls are rare regardless of location when I am west of Tramway. Verizon's customer service, when I've needed it, has also been top notch. I am reluctant to abandon such a fine company but am contemplating a move to T-Mobile in order to get a phone that Verizon doesn't support.
