Have had AT&T for four years due to the desirability of the Iphone. My phone seldom worked in buildings and always dropped calls. I recently switch to a new carrier (still have an Iphone) and the difference is amazing. I waited to long to have a phone that actually works! Before I paid $120 dollars a month for a nice camera and ipod! I now have a phone that works with unlimited data and texting for less than I was paying AT&T for limited data and 200 messages. Please do not fool yourself I have stood in line at the AT&T store to complain only to be one of many whose phone did not work also standing in line. Nothing they could do to help me. The Iphone is great - AT&T really should not exist as a cellular provider.

Even the College tells new students there is no AT&T reception on campus, or in town for that matter. An early post here (2009) says the Santa Fe residents / government oppose new cell phone towers. The towers map would seem to support this as virtually no towers on the old town side, unfortunately that's where the Capital buildings and tourist locals are found. Would be nice to know if the blame for lousy cell reception is with AT&T for not placing towers or Santa Fe for not allowing towers. Somebody should get this fixed, but it appears to be ongoing for years now, so probably won't happen.

Has anyone noticed that AT&T service has gotten considerably worse in the past few weeks? I live 1 / 2 mile from the state capital building and I used to get at least a few small bars of coverage but in the past 2 weeks I get NO coverage at all in my home. I will get 1 small bar and then it switches to "searching". This is beyond pathetic! Has one of the towers gone down or something? The fact that I live in the capitol city of my state and get no coverage is extremely frustrating. I pay hundreds of dollars per month for mine and my husbands AT&T service... .i think I deserve a bit better.

No service at all. Shame on AT&T for not caring enough to lease some tower capacity. I'm on vacation for two weeks at a state capitol, UN cultural city, and one of the top five travel destinations on every list I can find, and I can't make a phone call? This isn't Death Valley. My family has 5 iPhones and an iPad 3G that are all useless outside a coffee shop. I want a refund this month. Merry f-ing Christmas.

Phone reception is sporadic at best. No service majority of time with small winnows with function ranging from 1to3bars. Many times does not ring and receive messages a week later when away from area or sometimes never. Texting questionable as well.

Glad you vented here. That was truly helpful and productive. I, for one, feel so much better. As it happens, people have spoken. AT&T held a meeting here in town last month. The plan is to upgrade existing towers to 3G by 2011 and then fill in the 'black holes' by adding new towers by the end of 2012. That's not soon enough for me, so I just got proactive, unlocked my iPhone and moved to T-Mobile. No 3G for AT&T iPhones at T-Mobile, but five bars on Edge is a hell of a lot better than nothin'.

As basically everyone here has already said: AT&T service in Santa fe is terrible. I live about a quarter of a mile from the plaza (the heart of Downtown Santa fe) and I either have no service or 1 teeny little bar of Edge - which is almost like having no service at all. I routinely miss calls (even if I have a few bars of service - my phone will never ring but then a voicemail will mysteriously appear... ) and texts I receive (if they even show up at all) have come hours late. Santa fe is the capital of new Mexico, AT&T! Get with it!

We just moved to santa fe and AT&T reception is awful. 90% of time, phone does not work inside or outside of house. Down in Santa Fe proper, service is ok. I might have graded AT&T a "1 - poor", but I didn't want to see the rating go up! Glad I didn't spring for an I-phone or I would be really p*&%ed off.

Literally, we have no recpetion. No bars. Everyday in our home, my cell phone says "No Service". For five minutes, I may have one bar and I madly rush to make a phone call and often don't have time to complete dialing before the one bar disappears. After several phone calls with AT&T, they have agreed to unlock my phone so I can switch carriers. I am considering either Verizon or T-Mobile. The AT&T customer service was quite good and they understood that I need to be able to use my cell phone.

Bizarre. No 3G in Santa Fe. Edge is generally 1 bar or no service. Drops calls. Sub-dialup speed for data. If I lived in Santa Fe, I would have to use a different carrier. When does the exclusivity arrangement with Apple and AT&T expire?

AT&T held a town hall style gathering in Santa Fe last evening. The result is that we will not see 3G service until some time in early 2011 (meaning maybe by December 2011) and they will not commit to installing new transmitters to cover the huge gap in coverage until 2012.

I just called the AT&T office for (yet another) update on 3g implementation in Santa Fe. As before, they are saying within the next 6 months (before the end of the year) there will be "significant upgrades in the Santa Fe network coverage including 3g service." This is the story I heard when I bought my iPhone nearly 2 years ago and the same story when I called them about a year ago. I'm officially giving up on AT&T. As other users have mentioned, coverage in the area is spotty and the Edge network is painfully slow. This coupled with the fact that AT&T is metering data usage now (the tiered data plans), yet is charging $20 / month for tethering means I'll be ditching my beloved iPhone for a Droid. Oh well. Thanks for nothing AT&T.

My wife and I have just moved to Santa Fe from Vail, CO. I had zero problems getting 3G reception skiing in the back bowls there. But now, after moving to Santa Fe -- a major tourist destination in the United States, I can't even get reception in my own house at times. The only way I can hold a conversation is to have my phone still and on speaker -- something I regard as a little rude and only necessary sometimes. This has been a huge disappointment! The best service I've received here is edge network. Come on AT&T, you can do better than this!

AT&T is really awful. I am putting my iPhone on ebay cancelling contract and moving onto Sprint or Verizon. The data is as slow as an old fashioned dialup connection, and normally does not work at all during busy times of the day. I called AT&T and they have no plans to update Santa Fe to 3G per their rep today (2 / 7 / 2010). Voice quality is terrible around Cordova and Old SF Trail, a major intersection!. Verizon cut right to the heart of AT&T with their ads. Unfortunately they are evil twins birthed from the same parents so I am not sure VZ would be an improvement

I started service with AT&T over 2 years ago and was sold with the intent that more towers were to come in certain areas of my usage and to date I am actually losing my service because I'm given a notice of "off network" where I live. I was informed by AT&T that my contract was to be canceled if I don't comply to the message--I'm not supposed to use my phone when I see the "off network" or else it "costs lots of money" to AT&T due to usage of other providers' towers in the area. Therefore, I caution whomever has this service in this area that AT&T will be canceling service due to the "high cost" to them. Reception at most times is poor to no reception at all in El Rancho area and not sure which cell service has best reception but I am looking for a better provider with the best reception at this time. Wish me luck!

When I turn on the phone it sometimes shows two bars and the letter E. Often when I try to dial or text, the bars and E vanish to be replaced by "No Service". I can run around outside, reset the device, but it's all in vain. Then suddenly, full bars and my voice mails from the previous twenty-four hours will appear. Then a "No Service" message again, and I can't return calls. I know I need to drop this company, but I keep dreaming that one day they'll actually deliver what they've contracted with me to deliver. If they can't get towers in, how can they sell me service they KNOW they can't provide? I'm a fool, and they're cheat filled millionaires.

I live on Vallecita dr. in Santa Fe. Absolutely no bars or coverage within my house. I need to go outside of my house to get any coverage. A very expensive service and equipment not to have service where I spend the most time. The only reason I keep it is because I love the I-Phone and can get coverage everywhere in the country except in my home here in Santa Fe. I have called At&T several times, they have no solution eventhough they say there are two towers in my vicinity. Very frustrating. I is very difficult for me to believe that there isn't something AT&T could provide to boost my ability to use my phone. It is my understanding thru various sources that they are not anxious to do this because it might cut into their land land business. I am on a two year contract and can only hope that Apple switches or opens up their carrier choices when their contract with AT&T expires.

Bishop's Lodge / Artist, Santa Fe, NM 87501 Sun Aug 31, 2008

Just moved here from Kentucky, where the reception was terrible at our house. After two months of going round and round with them about how bad our reception was, their response went from "our maps show you have excellent coverage!" to "we're working on it" to "we have no intention of doing anything". Eventually they offered to let us out of our two-year contract. Coming to Santa Fe, I was hoping for better. No such luck. Everybody I've talked to who lives here says it's common knowledge that AT&T sucks. I did talk with somebody at AT&T who said I would have to go outside the house to get a signal. I suppose that works when the weather is warm. All the other descriptions I've read here are what we're living now. We rarely get a signal, and if we do, a phone call of more than five minutes without getting cut off is rare. Strangely if I walk a block to the corner of Bishop's Lodge and Paseo de Peralta, I get five bars. In fairness to AT&T though, there are height restrictions in Santa Fe that exclude the 200' towers I'm used to seeing everywhere else. There aren't even any water towers or church steeples I've noticed that they could use. There's supposed to be a big meeting in a few weeks to discuss towers. Maybe some of the creative people here can come up with an idea that is both aesthetic and practical.

Its amazing with AT&T that I can be in the same location with 1-3 bars in my home and then the call drops to NO Service without even moving from the same chair. Every time I text, the phone goes to No Service. In my use of cell phones to date, this is the worst most frustrating reception I ever received from a cell provider. AT&t rep tells me they will be adding a tower or improved service in downtown Santa Fe by the end of September... We'll see.. if not, this baby is getting hacked to work on Sprint or Verizon.

No reception in my house. Sometimes I can make a call and in the same spot "No Service" a half hour later. Sometimes the phone doesn't ring and then wallah, 2 voice mails... Service drops and gets staticky walking 10 feet in the wrong direction if on a call. A lame way to use such a beautiful phone. In the backyard 2 out out of 5 bars... Yikes this sucks. I wish I knew. Works well near their store of course. Maybe they will eventually rent bandwidth from a downtown area tower. My Sprint Razor get full bars in both the same locations. Pretty weak.

State Wide, Santa Fe, NM 87501 Sun Jul 16, 2006

I've built out most of the major wireless networks in this state. Alltel has invested the most $$ early on, so they have the superior network, besides the Socorro area, they do not own the NM3 frequency. Analog is going away in late 06', but the majority of the analog sites have been upgraded to digital. T-mobile, Sprint / Nextel and Verizon are close seconds. Verizon and T-Mobile have kept upgrading their networks slowly over the years, which has improved their networks. Sprint / Nextel had a big push two years ago, but slowing down now. I'm currently working on the Cingular network. They have turned on 100 new sites in the last year, another 100 in development currently. Stay tuned, they will be competing soon. They roam with Platue and Commnet in the N. and SE. part of the state. These roaming partners have mediocre networks, we hope they will reclaim these areas and install their own network, about 100 sites. The only complaint I have in this state is Santa Fe! What are you guys smoking over there? It's almost impossible to develop anything, people think we are trying to implant micro chips and broadcast conservative brain washing. My solution is for all the wireless carries just cut you off. How do you like the reception now! This area is growing very fast and is supported by a sub-par network due to ignorance of its residents. You cant talk on you cell driving unless its hands free, so I have a docking station for my PDA, now I can surf the net while driving, good thing I'm looking down and not holding the phone up to my ear and looking forward. You people really frustrate me! I won't even start with Taos and Madrid, they should go back to smoke signals... .. Next time you see someone apposing a new cell site, please give your support to the cell phone company. Were trying to give you reception, but the hypocrisy is the only thing expanding, or is it ignorance? Each of these carriers has spent over $200 - $300 million in this state, they bring a lot of $$ into the state but the opposition is tremendous. I don't see anyone apposing the Labs and the weapons / hazards they develop. Out... ... ...

Reception at home (near Cerrillos and Rufina) is horrible. Sometimes my phone shows a decent signal, but I still cannot call out or receive incoming calls. Other times I just have no signal. Occasionally, everything works well. Some areas of Santa Fe I always have good signal, although many call still don't come through-I don't know someone has called until I get a signal that I have voice mail. Also, I lose signal traveling short distances from Santa Fe in almost any direction. My daughter has the same phone and carrier, and has even worse problems.
