We've tried Verizon and ATT, and both are utterly unreliable. We have BB and iPhone 3. Both dreadful, hard to find a signal -- even standing still when I get 3 bars (the best we can hope for), I typically watch signal strength sink back to 2 or 1, without moving another inch. Bottom line is without towers, no company can provide you a dependable connection. Period.

Ive fouund Sprint's coverage markedly improved over the last year. I was thinking of switching to T-Mobile but they don't even claim to cover my street. My reception in East Hampton is not that much poorer than in midtown which speaks more to how inaddequate their NYC coverage is.

Once you pass the sign that says "Welcome to the Springs" there is absolutely no service. I am considering canceling T-Mobile but I'm not sure what service works well in this area. I hear Verizon works. If Verizon can get it together why can't T-Mobile?

Northwest Woods, East Hampton, NY 11937 Mon Oct 03, 2005

We are all in the same boat! ALL cell service in the Northwest Woods and Springs sucks! That's because there are no towers in EH. They are not allowed. The nearest one is across the Sound. Get a land line!

Rt. 27 / East Hampton, East Hampton, NY 11937 Wed Aug 10, 2005

Had Verizon now for two years in East Hampton area. A disaster, constant poor reception in many areas. Dropped calls all the time, especially around Sag Harbor. Can't use the phone in the office. It goes on and on. It has been a nightmare ! Verizon sucks - there is no other word for it and I have not even talked about the fees !

I upgraded my phone to a snazzy new Motorola and found out that it, and several other new phones, get no or limited reception out here in the east end of Long Island. Had to go back to my old Kyocera 2235, which has other issues, but at least I could hear and be heard by others, the criteria that I measure phone service by (not cameras, ring tones and god knows what else they have now).

I was promised that all of Long Island was covered when I signed a one year contract in April. Service is unbelievably poor throughout the East End of Long Island. While most of Rt 27 is covered (with dead spots), once you leave the main road signal drops to zero. I saw in the local paper that plans were approved last year for a major increase in towers, but so far there is no sign of any change. I will try Cingular when my contract is up, and maybe switch back to Verizon which does have OK coverage in the area, if Cingular is also not there yet. Sprint promised coverage in 1998- and still has nothing- so I have learned not to trust promises.

Pocket PC Phone Edition
Montauk Hwy., East Hampton, NY 11937 Mon Jul 19, 2004

T-Mobile said there was "good" coverage in the Hamptons and Suffolk before I signed up but it sucked. No signal in some places, and constant dropping on the major highways -- Sunrise and L.I.E. -- due to dead zones. It became the "hello" phone since I'd be re-diailing every 60 seconds. I tried a "regular" Motorola handset and that wasn't much better than the Pocket PC phone edition. Eventually I took them to arbitration and eventually got out of the early termination fee and got some compensation from American Express because they refused to follow their own arbitration procedures. GSM works very well when it works -- when you are near a tower. In some parts of NYC there was good coverage, and when there was, the T-Mobile connection was amazingly clear. Many parts of Europe and Asia have much better densities of GSM towers in populated areas, too bad U.S. doesn't.
