I would do anything to get off AT&T at this point. THere's no way I'm renewing the contract that's for sure. It's just terrible. Shows full bars, but tehre's no internet, no txt messages. As of the time of this writing my phone is one of the top tier phones you can buy, and it's a very thin, very light, paperweight. Manhatten coverage is just absolutely terrible for their supposed "4G" network.

In my office the iphone is useless. All it can do is send text messages (Not iMessages). incoming notifications will occasionally get through. Any data usage is pretty much nonexistent. If I restart my phone, I get a small window of about 5 minutes where I can suddenly download data or take any sort of advantage of 3G network. Then it goes back to showing full bars, but not working. ATT has become awful in the past year. Completely unreliable. I've checked with others I know in the area, and they have the exact same thing. We are basically paying for nothing. Outside the building is basically the same, very poor data.

No service whatsoever. Nothing. Nada. Zilch. Absolutely useless. Absolutely pathetic for AT&T to. Of have service in Times Square, New York City. Anyone wanna trade a Verizon iPad for an AT&T iPad?

Awful reception in this building and downtown area as a whole. Funny thing is within the office I can receive and make calls + SMS, but data is very slow. In the halls of the bldg though, calls drop and SMS's do not come in at all. Outside the bldg on Church St., no data comes thru even at full bars!

AT&T has proven to be a very disappointing phone service. I cannot call within my room, and I am forced to go outside in the freezing cold, just to even make 10 second calls. The service is terrible. Recently, I went outside to make a call. The phone said I had four bars, but my call was dropped four times. By far the worst phone service out there, I will be switching to Verizon come January.

I may have 4 bars but service is schetchy. Just got off the phone with a rep who told me there are 4 cell towers out, and they've been out since yesterday. The real kicker is with their new contract agreement, they don't give credits for lack of service anymore. Imagine that, they're in business to provide service, yet they can get away with not providing service. What a joke!

I have AT&T, live next to the museum of natural history and yet... ... .yet, I cannot get a single bar of AT&T service in my very own apartment. We all know AT&T stinks for cell coverage in NYC, but one would think being located virtually next to one of the largest NYC tourist attractions, I might have a little bit of coverage. Nope. On a good day, you can find my husband and I waving our hands / phones in the air in 1 of 2 very precise spots within our apartment that once in a while, will actually transmit a text message. I don't understand how AT&T is getting away with this! I'm certainly far from a legal expert but isn't a contract a binding agreement that BOTH parties hold their end of the bargain? How is it that I am unable to terminate my contract when the other end is not fulfilling their end of the agreement??? To make matters worse, I pay a substantial amount of money to have this "phone service" each month yet I have to take private and / or professional calls in public on city streets and parks because I can't make a call in my own home? I once had to take a job interview via phone in a starbucks and was mortified when the baby next to me began screaming... ..I ducked into the restroom. The day my contract expires I am chucking my iPhone into the center of the street to watch MAC trucks smash over it all day long. I'm told it will cost over $200 to end my contract with AT&T, despite the fact I can't make or receive a single phone call outside of a public place. Unreal.

Meanwhile, my wife has a Verizon iPhone and never has lost a call.

Is this the right forum to vent about AT&T's continuing crappy lousy for sh&t signal in Manhattan? That's right - smack dab in the middle of New York, New York. The truth is the complete opposite of their new ad campaign about a better network - the reality is that AT%T's sucks! I have a beautiful view of Central Park - from my window I see the lower half of Fifth Ave. and two-thirds of Central Park South. But since the first day we got our cell phones on AT&T, the signal has been so bad that we always ask to call folks back using our land lines. No improvement at all despite five years of complaints. Now, in this neighborhood, it's getting WORSE. Yesterday and today, distortion and dropped calls all over the neighborhood. Turn the corner from 70th St.onto Central Park West and it's like turning on a fuzz box. What's the problem with AT&T? BTW, my phone is a Motorola RAZR - V3 I think.

Appears to have full bars for phone and internet on my smart phone but the Media Net of AT&T provider has actually shut down. Message indicates there is no connection at the provider end, not at my phone. This happens more frequently since March 2011 and sometimes all my efforts to reconnect take hours to work. If I walk to Broadway with the phone it eventually connects with Media Net again. Terrible. Can't trust this provider and it is costly.

I really hope this won't last long because it's our only phone and I work from home. Just another note, went to ATT on Lex and 45th st and it took less than 10 seconds (not kidding) for the guy to tell me I need a new phone because the battery is dead even though the phone is 3 months old. AT&T should be ashamed of their lack of service in one of the major city centers in the world. In order for me to attempt to connect a call in my building, I need to sit on my windowsill with the phone laying next to me in speaker phone mode. Typically, I will need to attempt a call 5 times in a row before the "call failed" messages end, and the call actually connects. Once that happens (when the mini-miracle occurs - my cellphone actually makes a CALL), it's a crap shoot as to how long the call will stay connected. I was a Verizon consumer prior to the iPhone coming out, and I am once again a Verizon consumer with a brand new iPhone4. I will NEVER go back to AT&T.

As soon as I enter my work floor I lose reception on my iPhone. I cannot place calls, Incoming calls do not ring and I get new voicemail alerts only when I leave the building and walk at least a block. Text messages are delayed incoming and outgoing. If I power the device off and on again after 5 minutes I will get reception for about 10 minutes after which my bars dissappear again and the device starts 'searching' for service. First time I contacted AT&T about this they told me to make sure that I was not obstructing the antenna (around the phone's edges) so I removed the protective case but this did not help much. I had a regular AT&T cell phone up to January of this year and I never had a reception problem in my office building until I switched to the iPhone. I love it for all the tons for features and apps and it sure does make my hectic schedule more manageable but I'm thinking of going back to simple phone so that I can have my service all the time.

I've been sticking it out with ATT for a few years and I've had it, had it, had it with endless dropped calls. Worse, I keep getting polite reps who endlessly tell me about 'towers being down or being repaired.' One rep told me I had "metal" in my building! I politely informed her that we use metal in buildings in NYC so they won't fall down. Further, when I point out that I try making calls from Wall St.[my office seems to be it's own personal ATT Dead Zone], which is basically the capital of the planet and not some farm in Iowa, I'm politely told "they're working on it." I've learned to speak faster because it's not a question of IF an ATT call will drop it's WHEN. I have just spent $130 on a Verizon Accolade. It is a pre-paid one month phone. It's not as fancy as my Samsung Impression but it does something ATT phones have a VERY hard time doing... it does ***NOT*** drop calls! Today, 10-18-10, the little Accolade made successful calls from 2 locations [1 in my office another in a nearby building in lower manhattan] where ATT never even shows ONE bar!

Good customer service though, I received two BB Bold replacement models and a cheap iPhone upgrade hoping something would fix the problem but just made it worse. Full bars, no bars, no service, full bars, it just keeps showing something else every 10 seconds. Making phone calls impossible. Unfortunately that's what a phone should be good for, no? No problems in CT but that doesn't help. I need a phone that simply works in the city and AT&T just can't deliver.

constantly dropping calls / the bars showing signal strength do not appear to be truthful, and AT&T denies its happening. had no problem with it in miami, washington DC, colorado nor north carolina, so it's definitely a problem with new york towers. the fact that they won't admit it and fix it is beyond logic and extremely annoying. i think a class action lawsuit should be started to recover our monthly payments for their horrible service and refusal to fix it.

The phone is effectively unusable. 99% failure or dropped. If I do connect with someone, one party cannot hear the other. The other day it took 8 calls to 611, AT&T customer service, to connect where we could hear each other. This call dropped, too. I'm on the 3rd floor of a brownstone on the upper east side of Manhattan, not in some granite cave five miles under the earth. Good grief, AT&T wireless service sucks. What's interesting is that the reception indicator shows 4 or 5 bars. I'm calling BS on that. Also, AT&T now requests that you download an Ap to send them a notice every time a call fails or is dropped. I don't want to be a network engineer, particularly an unpaid one.

Calls get disconnected all the time in the middle of a conversation. During calls, the voice is broken and you cannot hear a complete sentence. You have to keep asking the caller to repeat what was just said. When you call someone and are put on hold for half an hour, it is extremely annoying to get disconnected. Is this what we are being charged big bucks for by AT&T? They deserve to be driven out of business.

AT&T is horrible. My phone didn't ring when people call or register that I had voicemail until days after the call. When the phone did ring, I had a one-minute countdown until the reception went out and the person on the other end couldn't hear me. I use my cell phone as my primary phone to talk to clients; less than one month after buying the iPhone and starting a 2 year contract with AT&T, I had to cancel my plan (and they won't waive the cancellation fee just because of a silly thing like your phone not being capable of being used as a phone) and get a Verizon phone.

No reception at all for voice calling on the 3rd floor of 10 W. 15th Street. EDGE (data) requests succeed sporadically, but definitely are not instantaneous. My other cellphone is a Motorola RAZR on the T-Mobile network. It gets 5 bars in the exact same location as my Blackberry 8310 on the AT&T network. Friends with iPhones (on AT&T) were unable to place or receive phone calls or texts from my apartment. There is definitely an AT&T dead zone where I live.

As of late, AT&T cell coverage has become terrible. E.g. long delays in transmitting text messages, dropped calls, loss of service. I'm curious if this is a homeland security issue in Manhattan affecting all carriers or if AT&T is just farming out its duties to subcontractors.

Ever since I switch from T-Mobile which was horrible to say the least. I haven't had anything but stellar service with At&t. My gf had Verizon and there wasn't one place in the city / long island or upstate that she got service and I didn't, love AT&T I do get dropped calls sometimes but 3G works great for me 90% of the time. Most people that have bad reception with AT&T and iphone are the same ones that refuse to update their phones or are just exaggerating about how they lose service. because I have been in many places with people with sprint / verizon / T-Mobile and with AT&T I always have service longer than any other carrier.

We recently moved from Chicago to Manhattan. AT&T service had been mostly reliable in Chicago, but is terrible in Manhattan. On street in front of our building, 'no service'. In various area on the streets, calls go directly to voice mail, and outgoing calls are impossible even when bars are strong. AT&T's network in Manhattan is in bad need of repair or upgrade. If it weren't for my beloved iPhone, I'd drop AT&T immediately.

3g Service in Union Square NYC is non existing. I had a Nokia N75 and I thought my problem was the old handset (well thats what the AT&T store reps said trying to make me renew my contract ). Now that I have the iphone 3gs I get the same problem. I spoke with a rep at the AT&T store on 14th street and he told me to switch to EDGE for a week. I spoke to numerous reps over the phone and they said it seems to be faulty 3g cell towers in the area being worked on. I say we all should complain and get a class action lawsuit going on and get some money back or get AT&T to change the rates for 3G service... ..

I bought an iPhone 3G from the Apple Store on 14th St. three days ago, and thus was forced to switch to AT&T from Verizon Wireless despite many, many happy years with them. Tomorrow I will be returning the iPhone, sadly. The hardware and many apps are excellent... but AT&T service in Manhattan is absolutely the WORST! In my apartment, in restaurants, in office buildings -- even in Grand Central! -- over the last couple of days I have had dropped calls and virtually NO access to Internet and email. Whenever I step out onto the street, the signal is perfect... but the iPhone with AT&T service is virtually UNUSABLE in New York City. And I have tried to use it in SEVERAL neighborhoods, and always the same problem. Tomorrow, as I said, I am returning the iPhone, quitting AT&T, switching BACK to Verizon Wireless, and getting a BlackBerry touchscreen through my Verizon store. If you live in NYC and are thinking of getting an iPhone... DON'T DO IT! You will regret it. UNUSABLE!

I live on the ground floor and my building effectively blocks reception inside my apartment (even though service outside on 9th Ave is perfect and the AT&T cell tower is nearby on 811 10th Ave). I have become aware of the concerns and limitations regarding home installed cell repeaters and the expense of large industrial repeaters (and the requirement for carrier approval). Especially in Manhattan, it is not easy for the consumer to take measures to improve cellular reception. At the Web 2.0 Conference in November 2008, Ralph de la Vega CEO of AT&T Mobility, indicated that AT&T will initiate market testing of Femtocell technology in 2009. He also indicated plans to use an enhanced 850 MHz spectrum to improve signal in densely populated areas. These are both important enhancements. In the meantime, I really enjoy my iPhone but the reception is unreliable and I really want to use the iPhone. Verizon is much more immune to signal deterioration in the city.

Living in NYC, you'd think that a cell phone would work where ever you are. However, that is NOT the case with AT&T / Cingular. I can't tell you how many times I'll be on the phone and walk from the living room to the kitchen and the call is dropped. Or I won't be moving at all and the call is dropped. In addition to dropped calls, sometimes the phone doesn't even ring. People will call me and say "I've been calling you for the past 15 minutes and every time, it goes to voicemail" which doesn't make sense because I don't have the phone off and there's no reason why it should be going to voicemail. It is the most annoying thing EVER and I will be switching to a new carrier soon.

From our apartment, it alternates between 5 bars and 0 without apparent reason. Quality is sporadic, I often get "network error" when I try to connect and calls get dropped without counting as "dropped calls" in their stats because it just goes silent but doesn't disconnect. It drives me crazy when I see their "fewest dropped calls" ads because they claim I have no dropped calls because one or the other party ends up hanging up after a minute of silence. Argh!

I get excellent reception for 15 to 30 minutes a day and NO reception anywhere from Lower Manhattan to Central Park West the rest of the time. Usually, early in the morning or late at night I'll get a strong signal on the 19th floor in my west-facing apartment. Then, in mid conversation, pfft! Dead as a doornail for the next 12 to 23 hours. This phone is still usng a SIM from the AT&T service. A salesperson in the Cingular store beween 53rd and 54th on Broadway told me that's probably what the problem is. The contract was originated on the West Coast, and even though we are now out of contract, the guy told me that only my wife, who signed up for the service, can get the SIM changed. As my wife is still on the West Coast, this is a pain. I may just sign a new service contract with Cingular here and get a new phone. My sister-in-law was in NYC Tuesday night and got excellent Cingular connectivity everywhere we went in Manhattan, including the subway tunnels.

But ever since Cingular took over I can't carry on a conversation becuase it cuts out every other word even though I constantly have 5 bars. Thought it was my old Sony Ericson phone and then went and upgraded to the razr and still the same problem. Guess I'll try Verizon.

Service is spectacular. I get the full 5 bars of service everywhere I go. Whether it's in an elevator, the basement or the 8th floor. I have never gotten any dropped calls in the area and the calls I make are clear and perfect. I am always traveling around manhatten and the serivce remains the same; wonderful. I frequently travel in the MTA subway service. I take the 1 train and the 7 train to and from the area. I get 3 or 4 bars underground at 66th street going home. I get perfect service on 59th street, still in the train. I get 1 or 2 bars under 50th street and then I lose service at 42nd street times square. The same consists when I am traveling to manhatten. Compared to my friends with other cellphone services, I am always the one with the amazing Cingular service. Cingular has flawless service wherever I go in the manhatten area and has never let me down. There service is very reliable and I think it is the best out there. I never had any problems and I recommend their service to anyone.

I can see a cell phone antennae on top of a building (7 floors tall) from my apartment that are directed right at my apt. I think this is my cell phone tower and explains my excellent reception. The building is on 84ths street about midway between Broadway and Amsterdam. I imagine that if you were on the other side of my building (tall - 23 floors) you would not get any reception from this tower and might explain the poor reception from other users in the area.

As with much of the upper west side, Cingular coverage is a problem, so the signal is either lost or fluctuates wildly with any movement. Perhaps they will add some locations or buy space from Verizon. I am not switching because the Cingular coverage in Florida is much better than Verizon's.

Very erratic coverage inside our apartment building. Movement of 1 meter (3 feet) in any direction would change the reception from 3 bars to none. Switched to Cingular from Verizon due to rollover and family plan features. Had AT&T back in 2000 and sales rep assured me that coverage had been upgraded to "equivalent to Verizon". Trust me, Cingular service if definitely inferior. I can't tell you how many dropped calls all across the city. Besides obvious places, (elevators etc) this happened to me so rarely with Verizon. Now it happens daily with Cingular. And call clarity is far inferior to Verizon. Also, my apt has unobstructed west view but I can't make calls from my apt now due to spotty reception and numerous dropped calls. Never a problem with Verizon. Phone says 5 bars but then drops call, goes to 1 bar, then 10 secs later says 5 bars again.. all while standing in 1 spot! Another annoying fact is the annoying touch tone delay. When dialing in voicemail passwds, when you punch in #'s, there is a latency in the phone registering the touch tones (5-10 secs?). Never had that issue with Verizon which recognizes instantaneously like a land line. Only good thing is rollover and family plan. Coverage is so bad though that I rely on my work issued Verizon phone to make important calls so that I can hear call and not get dropped.

As soon as I start walking towards 10th avenue, the line drops and I have no signal, when I used to have it for the last 2 months. Not only, often the phone shows full signal strength, but no matter what number I call the lines are always busy... My two friends who also have Cingular have had the same problem. They better put up some repeaters, or they'll lose all their customers in the area... I'll be the first one Cingular, raising the bar... .funny, huh?

Terrible AT&T customer service--nicer customer service for Cingular on the phone, terrible in the Cingular store no one has answers. Signal goes up and down only in the building, and depending on where you are in the apartment.

I have been a Cingular customer for 5 years and never had any problems until I moved to the city. Now about 80% of my calls are dropped, and it's not because I have no reception - I will have full reception at the beginning of a call, and then (while in the same spot of the apartment) it will suddenly drop to nothing, at which time the call gets dropped, but will immediately return to full reception again afterwards. When I called to complain their response was "your contract says we don't guarantee service in all areas." Come on, this is NYC!
